    (54) Television receiver

    (57) A television receiver (10) includes a first image generating circuit (14) and a second image generating circuit (16). In the first image generating circuit (14), an image signal of a squeeze image having an aspect ratio 4:3, that is inputted from a MUSE/NTSC converter, is written in a field memory (18) in response to a write clock and read from the field memory (18) in response to a read clock that is generated by a 7/5 multiplication circuit (22) and has a frequency of 7/5 times the write clock, so that the squeeze image is compressed in a vertical direction to have an aspect ratio 16:9. An NTSC image signal is subjected to a scanning line number conversion in the second image generating circuit (16) so that the number of scanning lines of the NTSC image becomes coincident with the number of scanning lines of the squeeze image. An output of the first image generating circuit (14) or an output of the second image generating circuit (16) is selected by a switch (26) in a first mode or a second mode.
