[0001] This innovation relates to means for screening a space housing the filler pipe of
a vehicle, in particular for refueling.
[0002] Filler pipes for the refueling of a vehicle located within spaces which are closed
off by corresponding doors, and filler pipes whose ends terminate directly flush with
the coachwork of the vehicle, are known in the art. In both cases the filler pipes
are closed by a cap when the vehicle is in normal use, which is sometimes provided
with a safety lock, and which in the latter case is preferably flush with the end
of the filler pipe and therefore with the coachwork of the vehicle.
[0003] The two arrangements just described are not however without disadvantages. In the
first case the door which closes off the space sometimes does not allow the vehicle
to be refuelled conveniently, because of its reduced angle of opening, particularly
so with modern fuel delivery nozzles which are larger in size than those used previously.
[0004] Secondly the requirement for a filler pipe of greater diameter than those previously
in use, so that it can comfortably accept modern fuel delivery nozzles, is contrary
to aesthetic requirements according to which these means for the refuelling of the
vehicle should not be very apparent or should even be hidden.
[0005] The object of this innovation is to provide means for screening a space housing a
filler pipe for a vehicle which overcomes the aforementioned disadvantages and which
allows the vehicle to be refuelled conveniently even with modern delivery nozzles
which are larger than those previously in use.
[0006] In accordance with this innovation screening means for the space housing a vehicle
filler pipe, of the type comprising a door having the shape of the opening to the
said space and means for hinging the said door to a supporting member which is integral
with a side wall of the said space, the said means being capable of allowing the said
door to adopt selectively a first working position in which the said door is flush
with the said opening to the space, closing it off, and a second working position
in which the said door projects at the side of the said space, to reveal the said
filler pipe, characterised in that the said hinging means comprises at least one pin
for connecting in a rotatable manner about a predetermined axis the said door to the
said supporting member and bistable elastic means capable of placing the said door
in the said second operating position with an angle of opening substantially in excess
of 90°, are provided.
[0007] For a better understanding of the invention a non-restrictive description of an embodiment
will now be provided with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a view in lateral elevation of screening means for a space housing
a filling pipe for a vehicle constructed in accordance with this innovation,
Figure 2 shows a view in cross-section along a plane of line II-II on the screening
device illustrated in Figure 1 in the closed position,
Figure 3 shows a view in cross-section along a plane of line II-II on the screening
device illustrated in Figure 1 in the open position.
[0008] With reference to Figures 1 to 3, 1 indicates screening means for a space 2 housing
a filler pipe 3 for a vehicle, which is known and not illustrated in the figures for
the sake of simplicity, constructed in accordance with this innovation.
[0009] Screening means 1 comprises a door 4 having an outside shape 5 which is substantially
identical to the corresponding perimeter 6 bounding an opening 7 to space 2 and also
comprises corresponding means 8 hinging door 4 to a supporting bracket 11 integrally
fixed to an internal side wall 12 of space 2 which allows door 4 to adopt selectively
a first working position 13 in which door 4 is flush with opening 7 to space 2, closing
it off, and a second working position 14 in which door 4 opens through an angle substantially
greater than 90° and projects alongside space 2 where, when in use, it provides access
to filler pipe 3.
[0010] In accordance with this innovation hinge means 8 comprise a pin 15 for the rotatable
attachment about a predetermined axis of door 4 to supporting bracket 11, and bistable
elastic means 16 capable of locating and holding door 4 in the second working position
14 with a corresponding angle of opening substantially in excess of 90°.
[0011] With particular reference to Figures 2 and 3, bistable elastic means 16 comprise
a first outer bush 18 and a second inner bush 21 which act together and are connected
together by means of corresponding hinges 22 and 23 to pin 15 and supporting bracket
11. Elastic means 16 also comprise a spring 24 placed between bush 18 and bush 21.
[0012] In accordance with the invention inner bush 21 is inserted telescopically with freedom
of movement within outer bush 18 in such a way that it can adopt corresponding oblique
positions with corresponding axes of symmetry, which are not shown in the figures
for the sake of simplicity, which form between them an angle which is not a flat angle.
Spring 24 is housed within outer bush 18 and inner bush 21 and acts against base walls
25 and 26 respectively of bushes 18 and 21.
[0013] On an inner lateral surface 27 thereof facing inner bush 21 outer bush 18 has a plurality
of projections 28 in a substantially equally spaced arrangement on aforesaid inner
surface 27, these projections 28 having corresponding substantially semicircular profiles
in transverse cross-section, which is not shown in the appended figures.
[0014] On an outer face 31 of its base wall 26, opposite door 4, inner bush 21 is provided
with a projection 32, of a half-barrel shape, which acts together with a corresponding
concave support 33 which projects from a supporting bracket 34 integrally fixed to
bracket 11.
[0015] On an outer face 35 of its base wall 25 outer bush 18 has corresponding means of
attachment 36 which act together with and snap onto pin 15.
[0016] In accordance with this innovation two folded back ears 38 in which corresponding
holes 41 are provided for housing pin 15, are provided at the corresponding opposite
ends 37 of bracket 34.
[0017] Pin 15 is shaped in an intermediate portion 42 opposite outer bush 18 in such a way
that it is substantially lifted by door 4 and acts as a support for outer bush 18
itself. A plate 42 which is integrally fixed to an inner face 43 of door 4 and allows
the latter to open and close is also hinged on pin 15.
[0018] In use outer bush 18 acts together with intermediate portion 42 of pin 15 while inner
bush 21 acts together with concave support 33 and spring 24 acts as a reaction member
between the two bushes 18 and 21, acting on inner base walls 25 and 26, contributing
to holding door 4 in position in one of the two operating positions 13 or 14 in which
the door is closed or open respectively.
[0019] The advantages associated with this innovation are obvious from what has been described:
the possibility of opening the door through an angle greater than 90° allows easy
access to the filler pipe for refuelling the vehicle, even when modern delivery nozzles
which are larger in size than those previously in use are used.
