Liquid tight package having upper and lower lid parts |
(57) The present invention is for a liquid tight sealed packaging which is obtained by
folding of a flat sheet. One side of the sheet has a barrier material which is impermeable
for the liquid product, for which the packaging is intended. The packaging can easily
be opened and with satisfying result be closed again. The packaging is also cheap
to produce and empty packagings take up little space. The packaging comprises a bottom 1 surrounded by short sides 2, 3 and long sides 4,
5. The sides are joined by corner parts which by a folding line 14 are separated in
two parts 12 and 13. At each longer side 4, 5 there is a lid part 6, 10 the size of
which is essentially the same as that of the bottom 1. One lid part 6 is intended
to be a lower lid and is separated by a perforation 9 into an inner part 7 and a surrounding
border 8. On each short side 2, 3 there is a flap 15, which also comprises and edge
18 delimited to the shorter side and the outer part of the flap by two folding lines
16, 17.

[0001] The present invention is for a liquid sealed packaging which is obtained by folding
of a flat sheet. One side of the sheet has a barrier material which is impermeable
for the liquid product for which the packaging shall be used. The packaging is primarily
intended for viscous products such as paint, glue etc., which require large opening
by use. Packagings of the kind which are used e.g. for drinks are not suitable for
this purpose.
[0002] The packagings which have hereto been used for paint, glue and the like products
are mainly cans of metal or plastic. Usually these have a cylindrical shape which
by sorting and handling in the warehouses on loading pallets etc. means that only
about 60 % of the available volume can be used. Other drawbacks of these packagings
are that the lids can be difficult to open or require special tools for opening. In
certain cases the resealing of the packaging may cause problems either because it
is not intended to be resealed or because the lids have been deformed by opening.
[0003] The present invention is for a liquid sealed packaing which makes it possible to
use the entire volume which is available in the space for storing and handling. The
packaging can easily be opened and resealed with sufficient result. The packaging
is also cheap to produce and empty packagings have small volume.
[0004] A packaging according to the invention is obtained by folding flat sheet, one side
of which, which is to be the inside of the packaging, has a barrier material layer.
The barrier material is chosen depending upon the liquid which shall be packed and
can be e.g. a polymer film or other layer of polymer material or wax. The body of
the packaging is preferably corrugated board of conventional kind but it can also
be cardboard or plastic. The packaging is obtained by folding a flat sheet in a suitable
way to a box shaped packaging with lid.
[0005] The invention shall now be further illustrated by the embodiments shown in the enclosed
figures.
[0006] Figure 1 shows a flat sheet for a packaging according to the invention.
[0007] Figure 2 shows a packaging during folding and assembly.
[0008] Figure 3 shows a completed packaging with open lid.
[0009] Figure 4 shows another embodiment of the packaging.
[0010] The packaging comprises a bottom 1, which is surrounded by short sides 2, 3 and long
sides 4, 5. The sides are united by corner parts connected therewith which by a folding
line 14 are divided in two parts 12 and 13. On each of the long sides 4, 5 there is
lid part 6, 10 of a size which is essentially the same as the bottom 1. One lid part
6 is intended to be a lower lid and is split by a perforation 9 into an inner part
7 with a surrounding border 8. On each short side 2, 3 there is a flap 15 which also
includes a border 18, which is delimited against the short side and the outer part
of the flap by two folding lines 16, 17.
[0011] When the packaging is to be made ready for use the short sides 2, 3 and the long
sides 4, 5 are raised at right angle to the bottom 1. Hereby the material of the corner
parts 12, 13 is folded to form outwardly directed mainly triangular flaps which are
folded in towards the short sides as shown in figure 2. Thereupon the flap 15 is folded
outwards and downwards along the folding lines 16 and 17 so that the upper border
18 covers the upper part of the corner parts so that a surface is obtained which is
parallel with the lid and the bottom for the sealing of the packaging. In connection
with the folding the different parts are attached to each other with a suitable glue,
e.g., a melt glue which is supplied in sufficient amount and quantity. The packaging
is thereupon filled with its content, whereupon it is sealed by the lid parts 6 and
10. These are folded over the packaging, as shown by the bent arrows 19 and 20 in
figure 3. Herewith that part of the lid having a perforation shall be folded first
so that it is positioned under the other upper lid part 10. Thereby the packaging
is liquid sealed thereby that the outer border 8 of the lower lid part is glued to
the upper border 18 of the short sides and agaisnt the inside of the opposing longer
side 4. Also in this case it is suitable to use a so-called melt glue for the glueing
of the lower lid, whereby the quality of the glue in certain cases has to be chosen
with the content of the packaging. The upper lid 10 is thereupon glued to the lower
lid in such a way that when the lid is opened by pulling the upper edge 11 upwards,
the inner part 7 of the lower lid follows the upper lid 10 and is torn away from the
lid border 8 along the perforation 9. The packaging may then be resealed thereby that
the upper lid is folded down whereby the inner lid part 7 of the lower lid returns
to its original position and gives a satisfactory, although not liquid sealed, resealing.
[0012] Another embodiment of the invention is shown in Figure 4. This is intended to be
used if the lids are to be opened in their entirety without leaving a border 8 of
the first described embodiment. The packaging shown in Figure 4 has a ripable strip
21, 24 in the middle of each part of the lid. When the packaging has been filled with
its content and shall be sealed a thin plastic film if first applied over the opening.
It is liquid sealed glued around the whole of the opening onto the edges 18 of the
shorter sides and onto the lowermost part of the lids 6, 10. Thereupon one part of
the lid is folded over the plastic film, in this case the right-hand lid part 10.
Two strings of glue 22, 23 are applied to the downfolded lid whereupon also the other
lid part 6 is folded down. When the packaging shall be opened the wrip strips 21,
24 are removed in a known way, whereupon the lid parts are folded up. Thereupon the
plastic film is removed by wripping or tearing. In this way a packaging is obtained,
the opening of which when open is of the same size as the cross section of the packaging
but which when sealed has the stiffness which is obtained by the two lid halves both
of which entirely cover the packaging.
1) Liquid tight sealed packaging obtained by folding a flat sheet, which on one surface
being the inner wall of the packaging, has a layer of barrier material and comprising
a bottom (1), long and short sides (3, 4, 5, 6), lid (6, 7), and corner parts (12,
13), which are integral with the respective long and short sides and are folded outwards
onto the short sides (2, 3) and are overlapped by downfolded flaps (15) extending
from the short sides, comprising an area (18) along the upper edge of the short side,
characterized in that it comrpises a lower lid part and an upper lid part (6, 10), whereby at least
the lower lid part can be split by means of a perforation and is glued to the upper
lid.
2) Packaging according to claim 1, characterized in that the lower lid (6) by means of a perforation (9) can be split into an inner part
(7) and a surrounding border (8).
3) Packaging according to claim 2, characterized in that the inner part (7) of the lower lid is glued to the upper lid so that when the
latter is opened the lower lid is split along the perforation (9) so that the inner
part (7) is joined to the upper lid.
4) Packaging according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the flaps (15) which extend from the short sides also form surfaces (18) which
are parallel with the closed lids and adjacent to the lower lid.
