    (54) Liquid crystal display device

    (57) The invention relates to a liquid crystal display device having electrodes (3,4,5) which form a picture element matrix and generate an electric field (3) substantially parallel to the substrate (1); it is characterized in that it has a brightness recovering time of not greater than 5 min, the brightness recovering time being the time until the brightness of a displayed portion that has been displayed for 30 min and is turned off, returns to the background brightness. The products (εrρ)LC, (εrρ)AF and/or (εrρ)PAS of the specific dielectric constant εr and the specific resistivity ρ of the liquid crystal layer (LC), the orienting film (AF) and/or the insulating film (PAS) are preferably within the range of 1 x 10⁹ to 8 x 10¹⁵ Ω·cm.
