    (57) The bottom of a paperboard carton has flat panels (9a,9b), with overlapping edge portions (9c,9d), in which respective corresponding flaps (17a,17b) are provided. Either one or other of the flaps (17a,17b) is folded down so that the other flap overlies the folded flap before the carton bottom is hermetically sealed. The advantage of the invention is that a common carton blank can be used to avoid problems of carton orientation, the folded flap avoiding problems due to cut edges of paperboard coming into contact with the carton contents.
