Mattress with a structure allowing its cover to be taken off |
(57) The present finding relates to a spring mattress whose slip is designed to be taken
off particularly regarding the upper and lower lengths of cloth. This is carried out
by providing cords (1) passing through the thickness of the mattress and to which
the peripheral band (2) is secured so that the latter keep their rigidity, which goes
lost upon removal the lengths of cloth (4), unchanged.
The peripheral band (2) may also be secured by strings directly to the springs of
the mattress. Thus a covering is provided which is rigid enough in spite of the possibility
of being taken off. The upper and lower parts of such a cover may be taken off for
cleaning purposes and replaced with other like parts.

|
[0001] There are known mattress formed of an inner structure provided with springs to which
one or more layers of material are secured at the upper and lower sides in order to
give the proper softness, rigidity and insulation to both sides of the mattress to
be fabricated.
The thus obtained assembly is then covered with the outer mattress slip which is secured
to the inner structure of the mattress by strings passing from one side to the other
side of the mattress and being secured to the slip by buttons or other grips of pleasant
aesthetic aspect. Such a mattress forms one assembly with the outer slip so that the
latter cannot be removed for cleaning purposes. To avoid such a limitation, a second
cover protecting the inner slip is resorted to.
It would be very practical to be able to remove the slip of the mattress both to avoid
the provision of a second slip for hygienic reasons and to clean the covering slip.
In order to take the slip off it would be necessary not to secure the slip to the
inner structure, thus omitting the connection strings between the two opposite sides
of the mattress. Such a solution makes the slip free from the mattress itself but
causes the problem that in use the mattress slip moves with respect to the mattress
so that the peripheral band tends to twist.
[0002] The present finding seeks to provide a solution which allows the slip of a mattress
to be taken off and keeps the compact form of the mattress unchanged without causing
the mattress slip to shift in use.
[0003] Such a solution consists in the provision of transversal cords crossing the mattress
from one side to the other side in the transversal and, if necessary, also longitudinal
directions and directly secured to the peripheral band.
[0004] The present finding will be more readily apparent from the accompanying drawings
in which an exemplifying, not limiting embodiment is shown.
[0005] Figure 1 shows a mattress provided with covers which are about to be removed and
with a cut-away portion to see the interior thereof.
[0006] With reference to the figure, the mattress formed of its usual basic construction
is provided with cords 1 which cross it in the transversal direction and, if necessary,
also in the longitudinal directions at suitable intervals. Such cords are secured
to the peripheral band 2 so that they can accomplish the function of handles 3. Both
the peripheral band and the lengths of cloth 4 are provided with zippers 5.
Under such conditions, the peripheral band may be secured to the structure of the
mattress due to the provision of the transversal cords. Thus it is possible to remove
and to put back the mattress slip by using the zippers because it is not secured to
the inner structure by the conventional cross strings.
The particular securing means is capable of keeping the mattress slip and the peripheral
band in its position without deformation with the use.
[0007] In a possible alternative embodiment, the cords may also be secured by strings to
the inner surface of both sides of the mattress without forming the outer handles.
In the annexed drawing an embodiment relative to a spring mattress is shown but the
finding may also be applied to a foamed mattress.
[0008] Formal and structural modifications may be applied to the described embodiment, particularly
as far as the securing system of the cords to the side band is concerned, without
departing from the scope of the present finding as defined in the following claims.
1. A spring mattress provided with a mattress slip which can be taken off and formed
of a peripheral side band secured to the structure by crossing cords, and lengths
of cloths connected to the side band by zippers.
2. A foamed mattress having a mattress slip which can be taken off according to the preceding
claim.
3. The mattress of the preceding claims, characterized in that the cords connecting the
side band can extend in the transversal and longitudinal directions of the mattress.
4. The mattress of the preceding claims, characterized in that the cords may be secured
to the side band both from the inside and from the outside to also accomplish the
function of handles.
5. The mattress of the preceding claims, characterized in that the lengths of cloth are
secured to the side band by using any system equivalent to zippers.
