(54) Surveillance system for a video recording camera

(57) A surveillance system comprises a video camera (300) generating a video output signal (Vo) coupled to a video recorder (300A) having remote control capability. A motion detector (100) generates a signal (11) indicative of detected motion and responsive to the signal indicative of detected motion a control unit (200) generates a first control signal (21) for the video recorder (300A). The first control signal (11) initiates a recording mode in the video recorder (300A) and at cessation of the detected motion the recording mode is terminated. In the surveillance system described, battery powered operating time is extended by powering only the motion detector (100) during periods of inactivity. Recording media (300B) usage is conserved by only recording periods of detected motion and may be further conserved by recording only predetermined frames.
