(54) Ceiling mounted indoor unit for an air conditioning system

(57) The ceiling mounted indoor unit (10) for an air conditioning system is of the type that is generally recessed within a false or drop ceiling (41). The air conditioner has a fan (11) and heat exchanger (12) mounted within an enclosure (20). There is a primary fan suction inlet (31) and a fan discharge outlet (32) in the bottom wall (21) of the enclosure, and an auxiliary fan suction inlet (33) in a side wall (22) of the enclosure, so that at least some of the air entering the enclosure and passing through the heat exchanger will be drawn from the space (36) between the false ceiling (41) and the true ceiling (42). Air reenters the interceiling space (36) through holes and gaps in the false ceiling (41). The auxiliary fan suction inlet (33) reduces radiated noise and improves air flow distribution in the room served by the air conditioner.
