TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present invention relates to a dental composite material of the type useful in
tooth restorations and the like, such as for example, as an alternative to a conventional
dental amalgam or composite. More specifically, the invention relates to such a material
having a hardenable matrix component and a filler component. Specifically, the invention
relates to such a material wherein said filler component includes fillers having three
different particle sizes.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Certain practical considerations apply to the formulation and application of dental
restorative, such as resin-based posterior dental restoratives. Accordingly, it is
greatly preferred that the restorative composition be effectively homogeneous such
that air bubbles or structural discontinuities are substantially avoided from introduction
into the tooth structure. Additionally, it is preferred that such materials be "packable"
or "condensable" and be capable of deforming a matrix band during the course of tooth
filling. Such materials should also be capable of withstanding the physical stresses
extant in the posterior region of the mouth and not crumble, fracture or erode under
such conditions.
[0003] It has long been known to employ metallic amalgams in the restorations of posterior
teeth. Such amalgam materials have been shown to have good resistance to the physical
stresses experienced by posterior teeth and to posses small coefficients of thermal
expansion. Such amalgams have also been demonstrated to have good "packability" and
to demonstrate other properties necessary of the posterior restorative. Such materials
however, suffer from uncertainty as to the biological effect of the introduction of
mercury and other materials in the oral cavity over long periods of time.
[0004] Those skilled in the art of dental restoration will appreciate that certain posterior
restorations, such as Class II restorations, require the employment of a matrix for
proper application. This is to ensure that the replacement of the natural tooth structure
is replaced and restored in close contact with the adjacent tooth. Thus, it will be
appreciated that the use of a matrix band to surround the tooth to be repaired is
generally necessary. Such bands are needed when the tooth to be repaired must be excavated
in such a fashion that the resulting cavity preparation communicates from the top
surface to one or more of the side surfaces of the tooth. In such a case, the matrix
band is placed around the tooth and held tightly in place while a restorative material
such as amalgam is put into place. A measure of a material's packability and values
of the measured packability for conventional dental amalgams is described for example
in
U.S. Patent No. 4,226,622.

EP-A-0 475 239 discloses dental restorative materials comprising a photocurable polymeric component
and an inorganic filler, said filler comprising a plurality of particles (A) having
an average primary particle size of from 0,1 to 1,0 µm, a plurality of particles (B)
having an average primary particle size of from 0,5 to 5,0 µm and optionally further
filler particles (C) having an average primary particle size up to 5,0 µm. The particles
(B) may be glass particles.
[0006] Heretofore, conventionally and commercially available composite materials, while
durable, have suffered from low packability values. This results in less than effective
distention of the matrix band, often resulting in "rebound" or recovery of the band's
original shape and ultimately to less than ideal contacts. A need exists therefore
for a durable posterior dental composite material which has high packability.
THE OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
[0007] It is an object of the present invention to provide a dental composite material.
[0008] It is another object of the present invention to provide a composite material as
above, which is highly packable.
[0009] It is a further object of the present invention to provide such a composite material
which is durable when used in dental restorations.
[0010] It is still another object of the invention to provide an alternative dental material
to conventional amalgams and composites.
[0011] It is yet another object of the invention to provide a dental restorative material
that can be placed where desired and then sculpted or carved for aesthetics.
[0012] These and other objects of the present invention which should become apparent from
the description to follow, are carried out by the invention as hereinafter described
and claimed.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0013] The present invention provides an intra-oral or extra-oral dental restorative material
as defined by the claims. In general, a dental composite material comprises a hardenable
resin or compomer matrix and a filler component. The filler component comprises (a)
a first plurality of glass particles having an average particle size of from 5 to
10 micrometers; (b) a second plurality of glass particles having an average particle
size of from 0.1 to 1 micrometers; and, (c) a plurality of filler particles having
an average particle size of from 0.01 to 0.04 micrometers as further defined by claim
1. The material of the invention comprises from 12 to 18 percent by weight of said
resin matrix and from 80 to 88 percent by weight of said filler component.

PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
[0015] A dental composite or compomer material according to the present invention includes
a hardenable resin and a filler component. The material can be put in place with respect
to the dentition to be restored and then sculpted or carved as needed due to its non-flowing
characteristics.
[0016] The filler material is a radioopaque dental glass. The filler component comprises
three components (a), (b) and (c) as follows: (a) a first plurality of specific barium
glass particles having an average particle size of from 9 to 10, more preferably from
5 to 9 micrometers; (b) a second plurality of specific barium glass, particles having
an average particle size of from 0.1 to 1, more preferably from 0.5 to 0.9 micrometers;
and, (c) a plurality of filler particles which is fumed silica, having an average
particle size of from 0.01 to 0.04 micrometers. Filler (a) and (b) can be the same
or different material. It has been found that this inventive material has improved
packability greater than materials heretofore known in the art. The inventive materials
can be used as an intraoral dental restorative, but can also be used by the laboratory
technician in extra-oral dental applications such as in the production or restoration
of crowns, inlays, and the like. The invention will be exemplified and discussed herein,
for simplicity, with respect to intra-oral applications, it being understood that
extra-oral applications are within the scope of the invention.
[0017] The material may be contained in a protective unit dose primary package, having an
opaque polymeric cup thermosealed with a similar opaque polymeric or foil film lid.
The inverted cup can be used to shield the light sensitive material during use. The
material may also be packaged in a pouch or bag (not shown) having the characteristics
of the package to be described below.
[0018] For example, a package embodying the concepts of the present invention is generally
depicted by the number 10 on the attached drawings. As will be more fully discussed
below, package 10 is useful for storing, transporting and using photosensitive materials
such as material 11, which is the dental composite restorative material discussed
herein.
[0019] Package 10 includes an open top container generally indicated by the number 20 having
a base 21 and at least one upstanding wall 22 and having an open area 23 therein.
(Fig. 4) Package 10 need be of no particular size or shape. It is preferred however,
that package 10 be configured to closely hold a unit dose of material 11. One configuration
of package 10 is generally rectangular, such that four sidewalls 22 contiguously formed
with each other and with base 21 form container 20 (Figures 1, 3-5). Any other shape
is within the scope of the invention, including having a singular round sidewall 22
as shown in Fig. 2 as package 10b.
[0020] An example of a unit dose of the present inventive composite material is about 0.3
grams. With such a unit dose, a package 10 having an open area 23 of about 300 mm
2 is useful. However, smaller or larger sizes are all within the scope of the invention.
[0021] Similarly, material 11 need not be of any particular shape, and may include flat
or oblong shapes as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, or more rounded shapes as shown in Fig.
2. The equipment (not shown) used to form the unit dose of material 11 or other criteria,
will normally dictate the shape, and a configuration for package 10 may be selected
based thereon. Shapes conducive to efficient material handling are envisioned, and
all are within the scope of the invention. It is preferred that upstanding sidewall
22 be of sufficient height to allow a user to grasp sidewall 22 to effectively grasp
package 10.
[0022] Sidewall 22 is preferably an upstanding wall having a first end 30 proximate to base
21 and an end 31 distal to base 21 (Figure 4). Distal end 31 of sidewall 21 is proximate
to an open top 32 which opens into open area 23.
[0023] Distal end 31 of sidewall 22 is preferably contiguously formed with a laterally extending
shelf or web 40. In the characterization of the invention as depicted in Figures 1
and 5, web 40 has four portions 40a-40d. In the invention as shown in Fig. 2, a singular
web 40 extends from sidewall 22.
[0024] Web 40 serves a number of functions, including providing a convenient surface for
a user to grasp. Further, web 40 provides an extended surface for adhesive contact
with a release layer to be described below. Web 40 also provides a connector between
a plurality of contiguously formed packages 10 as depicted in Fig. 6-9 and as will
also be more fully discussed below.
[0025] A release layer 50 is removably and preferably adhesively affixed to web 40. Release
layer 50 closes open area 23 by being placed in a proximate and opposing relation
to open top 32. It is also preferred to configure release layer 50 to be of similar
shape and dimension to web 40, although this is not necessarily required. Any releasable
adhesive which will not detrimentally affect the unit dose of material 11 is useful.
It will be further appreciated that release layer 50 may be selectively removed from
package 10 and then replaced thereon to re-seal package 10.
[0026] Although an adhesively releasable release layer 50 is preferred, it is also within
the scope of the invention to provide a release layer that is torn, cut or otherwise
removed. All are within the scope of the term "release layer".
[0027] To facilitate removal of release layer 50 from container 20, a user merely grasps
a portion of release layer 50 and peels it from web 40 and distal end 31 of sidewall
22. To help the user in this procedure, a portion of release layer 50 may be left
exposed. This may be accomplished by any means, such as by providing a tab 51 (Fig.
2) which does not contact web 40, or by removing (or forming without) a portion 52
of web 40 such that section 50a (Figure 1) of release layer 50 is not in physical
contact with web 40 at that location. Any such means or others are within the scope
of the invention. As another example, as shown in Fig. 10, web 40 may terminate in
a step lip or land 41 which also does not normally contact a proximate portion 50b
of release layer 50. This provides an area where a user may grasp release layer 50
to remove it.
[0028] Package 10 is preferably substantially non-transmissive of at least a portion of
the light spectrum to which the material 11 is photosensitive. It may be substantially
non-transmissive of the entire light spectrum by being made of an opaque material,
or it may be transmissive of all portions of the spectrum save that to which the material
11 is photosensitive. The latter is useful when it is desirable to be able to see
the contents of package 10 for whatever reason.
[0029] Similarly, it is envisioned that a portion of package 10 may be opaque while another
portion may be transmissive of all or part of the light spectrum. For example, container
20 may be made opaque while release layer 50 is made partially transmissive, or vice
versa.
[0030] Package 10 is preferably thermoformed from black or dark pigmented plastic material
providing a positive light barrier. Examples of such materials include polystyrene,
polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene (preferably high density polyethylene), polypropylene,
and the like. Release layer 50 may be formed from a similar material or it may be
formed from a flexible material such as a metallized substrate or a paper and foil
(preferably aluminum) laminate, having a release coating or permanent sealable coating.
With a permanent sealable coating, the package 10 may have to be destroyed, or a portion
destroyed, to open. Release layer 50 and container 20 may also be individually formed
from laminate materials. For reasons that will be explored below, release layer 50
may be flexible or rigid. Figs. 3 and 4 depict a more flexible release layer 50 partially
removed from package 20. A flexible release layer may be formed from a metallized
substrate or a paper/foil laminate. A more rigid release layer 50 is depicted in Fig.
1 and may be formed from a more rigid or heavy plastic material. It will also be appreciated
that package 10 may be formed with a lid attached by a living hinge, a sliding hinge,
or any other useful lid, although these are not depicted in the drawings.
[0031] In use, a unit dose 11 of photosensitive material is provided in package 10. The
unit dose of material 11 is protected from premature exposure to light because package
10 is substantially non-transmissive of at least that portion of the light spectrum
to which material 11 is photosensitive. When it is desired to use material 11 for
its intended purpose, the user will first remove release layer 50. At this point,
the user may remove all or a portion of unit dose 11 from package 10. If a portion
of material 11 is removed and a portion is left behind, then release layer 50 may
be temporarily replaced onto container 20, thereby limiting continued exposure to
light. This is further facilitated if release layer 50 is somewhat rigid.
[0032] Alternatively, the user may wish to remove all of unit dose of material 11 from package
10. In this instance, the material 11 may be placed on a support surface 60 (Fig.
5). A dental tool 61 used to work with material 11 is depicted in Fig. 5 for environmental
purposes. To limit exposure of material 11 to light exposure in this instance, container
20 may be inverted over material 11 such that it covers material 11 as material 11
rests upon support surface 60.
[0033] In addition, release layer 50 may be placed upon support surface 60 and then material
11 placed upon the situated release layer 50 (not shown) before package 20 is placed
over material 11. This provides an additional and convenient work surface for the
user and again, may be facilitated by a relatively rigid release layer 40.
[0034] Package 10 may be provided as an individual unit, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. However,
package 10 may also be joined with one or more other packages 10 as shown in Figs.
6-9. Any number of packages 10 so joined, and in any relationship are within the scope
of the invention. For example, Fig. 6 depicts five packages 10 contiguously formed
by being joined along a portion of web 40. Webs 40 between individual packages 10
may be provided with perforations 70, scored portions (not shown) or the like, to
facilitate removal of one or more packages 10 from the others for use. Alternatively,
as shown in Fig. 8, there need be no perforations and the joined packages 10 may be
cut or torn from the others. No separation is necessarily required in use. Joining
of a plurality of packages 10 need be accomplished by no particular means other than
those conventional in'the art.
[0035] Other configurations for joining a plurality of packages 10, such as joining bases
21 (Fig. 9) are also within the scope of the invention. Similarly, a plurality of
packages 10 may be joined in rows and columns (not shown), or other configurations
without limitation.
[0036] Returning now to a discussion of the inventive dental composite restorative material,
the present materials are useful in many classes of tooth restorations, including
but not limited to Class I, II and IV types and the like. In such restorations, the
tooth to be restored is identified by the clinician and then excavated to remove decay
or the like. It is a common practice in posterior tooth restorations, to employ a
matrix band surrounding the tooth to be filled. These bands are generally thin, malleable
metal or plastic sheets formed to fit over the tooth. Use of such bands and a general
description of tooth restoration with which the present invention is useful, is described
for example in
U.S. Pat. No. 4,514,174 which is hereby incorporated by reference for such disclosures. By having improved
packability over previously known dental composite materials, one skilled in the art
will appreciate the improvement in tooth restorations that the inventive materials
make possible. The composite materials according to the invention may be inserted
into the cavity preparation by any conventional technique, including those described
in
U.S. Pat. No. 4,514,174. Those techniques similar to the handling and placement of dental amalgams, which
techniques are well known in the art, are particularly useful with the present invention.
[0037] Examples of useful resins for compomers are those materials having as a principle
functional ingredient, polymerizable unsaturated acidic monomers, such as a substituted
butane moiety with acid or reactive acid derivative functionality. An example of an
acid or reactive acid derivative functionality includes those having the general formula

y where R is an acid radical or reactive acid derivative and R' is a polymerizable
unsaturated radical having from about 2 to about 13 carbon atoms, x is 2 to 3 and
y is 1 to 2. A description of such materials is provided in
U.S. Pat. No. 5,218,070.
[0038] Any hardenable resin matrix useful in intraoral or extra-oral dental applications
is within the scope of the invention. Preferred resins include those that are curable,
more preferably curable by exposure to actinic light. Examples of such resins include
ethoxylated bisphenol-A-dimethacrylate; Bisphenol-A-Glycidylmethacrylate; triethylene
glycol dimethacrylate; and mixtures thereof. The inventive material includes from
12 to 18 percent by weight of the resin matrix component and from 80 to 88 percent
by weight of the filler component. Optionally, a shading pigment or other additives
may also be employed, such as for example, fluoride releasing agents, antibacterial
agents, anticaries agents, and the like.
[0039] One preferred resin material is the reaction product of Bisphenol-A-Glycidylmethacrylate
(Bis-GMA) and a chain initiator, such as hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI). The reaction
may also include other reactive components. For example, the urethane component may
be the reaction product of from about 27 to about 31 percent by weight of Bis-GMA
as a reactive resin, more preferably about 29 percent by weight; from about 29 to
about 33 percent by weight of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) as a reactive
diluent, more preferably about 31 percent by weight; and, from about 29 to about 33
percent by weight of ethoxylated bisphenol-A-dimethacrylate (EBPADMA) also as a reactive
diluent, more preferably about 31 percent by weight; with a useful amount of HMDI
(preferably about 8 percent by weight). The reaction is preferably catalyzed with
for example, a catalyst such as dibutyl tin dilaurate, and uses an inhibitor such
as butylated hydroxy toluene.
[0040] From about 97 to about 99 percent by weight of the urethane component, and more preferably
about 98 percent by weight, is used to form 100 percent by weight of the activated
resin component. The remaining constituents of the activated resin include inhibitors,
photoinitiators, UV absorbers, accelerators, fluorescing agents, and the like. While
the preferred material is photocurable, a chemical cure package can also be used,
including any of those well known in the art for dental use, including peroxide, amine,
an ascorbic acid derivative, a metal ion salt, and the like.

[0042] The filler component comprises components (a), (b) and (c) as discussed above. It
is believed that the mechanical interaction between these filler components, and particularly
the increased contiguousness of contact therebetween, increases the packability of
the inventive materials.
[0043] Glass particles used according to the invention include barium aluminum-borosilicate
glass, barium aluminofluorosilicate glass; mixtures thereof and the like. These materials
may also contain fluoride. Other useful materials include calcium hydroxy ceramics,
and others such as those fillers disclosed in
U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,338,773,
5,710,194,
4,758,612,
5,079,277, and
4,814,362. These materials may have any morphology or shape, including spheres, regular or
irregular shapes, filaments or whiskers, and the like. Any particle shape having the
other characteristics of the invention as described herein, including for example,
average particle size, is within the scope of the invention.
[0044] Preferred such glasses are also silanated although this is not an absolute limitation
of the invention. The filler particles may be silane treated (silane coupled) or provided
with other treatments as is conventional for dental fillers.
[0045] A composition making up 100 percent by weight of the filler component, is comprised
from 10 to about 30, more preferably from 12 to 25 percent by weight, even more preferably
15-20 percent by weight, of specific barium glass particles (a); from 50 to about
65, more preferably from 58 to 62 percent by weight, even more preferably 60 percent
by weight of specific barium glass particles (b); and, from 10 to 30, more preferably
from 12 to 25 percent by weight, even more preferably 15-20 percent by weight, of
fumed silica particles (c).
[0046] In addition to packability improvements, the materials according to the invention
when compared to dental composite materials previously known, exhibit similar or improved
physical characteristics. For example, these include depth of cure, diametral tensile
strength, transverse rupture strength, flexural modulus, radioopacity, hardness, fracture
toughness, opacity, polymerization shrinkage and wear. These characteristics and their
comparisons with known compositions will be more fully explored hereinbelow. It has
also been found that the present materials can be polished to a high luster with conventional
polishing techniques. It will be shown that certain characteristics, especially packability
and wear resistance are improved over the prior art materials.
[0047] Those skilled in the art will appreciate that "packability" as the term is used herein,
is a quality possessed in relatively greater or lesser degrees between products including
dental restoratives. It is difficult to attribute an exact quantitative measure to
"packability" but a useful packability index has been devised. By "packability index"
it is meant a measured value that describes the amount of force required, in grams
per millimeter squared (g/mm
2), to condense or deform the restorative material. The test procedure simulates the
clinical procedure of compressing the restorative material and packing the material
into the cavity preparation to form a dense, substantially void-free mass. The higher
the force required to compact the material the higher is the material's "packability
index" and hence, the more "packable" the material. A material according to the present
invention has a packability index of above about 300 and more preferably, above about
800 g/mm
2.
[0048] It has been found that compositions according to the invention have good or even
improved aesthetic characteristics. The materials are polishable to a high lustre
despite being highly filled. It has also been found that the products have excellent
radiopacity approaching that of gold and amalgam products. It has further been found
that the inventive materials have equal or superior post-cure or polymerization shrinkage
characteristics as compared to conventional materials. This will be more full explored
below.
GENERAL EXPERIMENTAL
[0049] In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the inventive materials in carrying
out the objects of the invention, a composite material was prepared containing the
components as follows and as was discussed above:

[0050] As stated above, the present compositions are intended to be among other things,
an alternative or replacement for conventional dental amalgams and composites. It
has been found that the dental compositions according to this invention are equal
to or superior to conventional dental amalgam products such as DISPERSALLOY available
from Dentsply International Inc. of York, PA. This includes for example, the wear
characteristics of the material. To determine the wear properties of the inventive
material, and standard wear test may be employed. Preferably the test is a three body
wear test, which most closely approximates the mastication effects of teeth in normal
use.
[0051] One such test uses the Leinfelder/University of Alabama in-vitro, three body cyclic
abrasion wear machine. The Rank Taylor Hobson Profilometer/Surface analysis system,
used in measuring material volume loss from the Leinfelder University of Alabama wear
machine, performs two distinct functions: 1) The Form Taysurf profilometer employs
a transversing stylus to construct a 3D topographic map of the worn area by means
of an electronic interface unit linked to a host computer, 2) A surface analyzer program
installed in the host computer graphically depicts the worn area and calculates its
volume. This volume, expressed in cubic millimeters, is regarded as the "wear volume
loss" of the material tested. The higher the volume loss, the greater the material
wears. After a 400k wear cycle run, a Dispersalloy (amalgam) test sample showed a
wear volume of 0.024mm
3; Alert (composite available from Jeneric/Pentron Incorporated) had a wear volume
of 0.041mm
3; Solitaire (composite from Kulzer) had 0.054mm
3; and, Tetric Ceram (composite from Vivadent) had (at only 250k wear cycles) 0.090mm
3. In contrast, the material according to the present invention showed a volume loss
of less than 0.024mm
3 . This data clearly shows an improved wear resistance (expressed in volume loss)
for the material according to the invention in relation to both conventional amalgam
and conventional composite dental materials.
[0052] The physical properties of this material, as such properties were discussed above,

[0054] The procedure used for determining the packability index may vary. By way of example,
the procedure employed for the above reported packability index numbers employed an
Instron Model 1123 Universal Testing Machine with Series IX Data Acquisition System.
The sample holder included six cylindrical cups measuring 6.5 mm (millimeters) in
diameter and 4.5 mm in depth (designed to simulate a tooth cavity). They were mounted
in a solid block of plexiglass. The penetrator employed was a 3.15 mm diameter, 6.25
mm long, blunt tipped carbon steel pin vertically positioned in a proper Instron UTM
fixture. The procedure employed was as follows:
A. Access Packability Test on the Instron computer and verify the following test parameters:

B. Using a plastic spatula, fill each glass cup to its brim with the material to be
tested. Gently fill the test material in the cup to prevent voids. Scrape away the
excess material off the top of the cup so that the material surface is level with
the cup brim. Allow the sample holder to achieve an ambient temperature of 23 C (plus
or minus 1) before testing, normally for at least one hour minimum.
C. Place the filled sample holder on the Instron load cell and calibrate to achieve
a 0.00 kg load reading on the "Load" digital display window.
D. Center the first filled cup under the Penetrator and slowly lower the Instron cross
head until the Penetrator just contacts the material surface (without penetrating
it).
E. Set the extension measurement to read 0.00 mm on the digital "Extension" display
window.
F. Press the appropriate computer key(s) to cause the cross head to lower (2.50mm)
and return.
G. Record the Packability Index value (as maximum grams/mm
2) by pressing the appropriate computer key(s).
H. Repeat the steps for the remaining five cups in the sample holder.
I. Press the appropriate computer key(s) to summarize and statistically analyze the
test data.

with a filler component having 25 percent by weight of (a), 60 percent by weight of
(b) and 15 percent by weight of (c). Tests were conducted as above and showed a compressive
strength (MPa) of 302 (plus or minus 26); diametral tensile strength (Mpa) of 48 (±
4); transverse strength (Mpa) of 127 (± 12); a flexural modulus (Gpa) of 11 (± 0.5);
a wear volume loss (cubic mm at 400,000 cycles) of 0.0183; a packability (grams/square
mm) of 765 (± 42); a depth of cure (mm) of 7.3; and, a Barcol hardness on a medium
scale of 99.
[0059] Still another test employing this filler component showed compressive strength (MPa)
of 354; diametral tensile strength (Mpa) of 47; a flexural modulus (Mpa) of 11,814;
a wear volume loss (cubic mm at 400,000 cycles) of 0.0167; a packability (grams/square
mm) of 747; a depth of cure (mm) of 5.4; and, a Barcol hardness on a medium scale
of above 100. This test sample also showed a post-cure shrinkage of 2.41 percent.
[0060] It is to be appreciated that the inventive material shows similar or improved physical
characteristics compared to the commercially available product. Most notably, the
inventive material shows an improved packability index and an improved localized wear
index and the like.

1. A intra-oral or extra-oral dental restorative material comprising a polymeric matrix
and a filler component; wherein said filler component comprises
(a) a first plurality of glass particles having an average particle size of from 5
to 10 micrometers;
(b) a second plurality of glass particles having an average particle size of from
0.1 to 1 micrometers; and
(c) a plurality of filler particles having an average particle size of from 0.01 to
0.04 micrometers,
- wherein the material comprises from 12 to 18 percent by weight of said polymeric
matrix and from 80 to 88 percent by weight of said filler component;
- wherein said first and second plurality of glass particles (a) and (b) are the same
or different material and are selected from the group consisting of glass particles
including barium aluminum-borosilicate glass; barium aluminofluorosilicate glass;
and, mixtures thereof,
- wherein said plurality of filler particles (c) comprises fumed silica, and
- wherein said filler component comprises
from 10 to 30 percent by weight of barium glass particles (a);
from 50 to 65 percent by weight of barium glass particles (b); and
from 10 to 30 percent by weight of fumed silica particles (c).
2. A material as in claim 1, wherein said polymeric matrix comprises polymerizable unsaturated
acidic monomers of a substituted butane moiety with an acid or reactive acid derivative
functionality.
3. A material as in claim 1, wherein said polymeric matrix is a photocurable resin.
4. A material as in claim 3, wherein said resin is the reaction product of ethoxylated
bisphenol-A-dimethacrylate; Bisphenol-A-Glycidylmethacrylate; triethylene glycol dimethacrylate;
and, hexamethylene diisocyanate.
5. A material as in claim 1, having a packability index above 300 g/mm2.
6. A packaged photosensitive material comprising in combination:
a photosensitive material formed into a unit dose and contained within a container;
said photosensitive material comprising a polymeric matrix and a filler component
as defined in claim 1.
7. The packaged material as in claim 6, wherein said container is an open top container
and has a base and at least one upstanding wall and has an open area therein;
said at least one upstanding wall having a first end proximate to said base and an
end proximate to said open top;
said end proximate to said open top being contiguously formed with a laterally extending
web;
a release layer removably fixed to said web and enclosing said open area; said container
and said release layer being substantially non-transmissive of at least a portion
of the light spectrum to which the materials are photosensitive;
wherein said unit dose of material is contained within said open area.
8. A packaged material as in claim 7, wherein said container is fabricated from polystyrene,
polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene and mixtures thereof.
9. A method of working with a unit dose of photosensitive material comprising the steps
of:
providing the unit dose of material in a package, wherein said material comprises
a polymeric matrix and a filler component as defined in claim 1; said package having
an open top container having a base and at least one upstanding wall and having an
open area therein;
said at least one upstanding wall having a first end proximate to said base and an
end proximate to said open top;
said end proximate to said open top being contiguously formed with a laterally extending
web;
a release layer removably fixed to said web and enclosing said open area; said container
and said release layer being substantially non-transmissive of at least a portion
of the light spectrum to which the materials are photosensitive;
removing said release layer from said package;
removing the unit dose of material from said package and placing the unit dose of
material onto a support surface;
repeatedly removing a selected portion of the unit dose of material and inverting
and placing said package over the unit dose of material;
such that light is prevented from contacting the unit dose of material under said
package as said selected portion of the unit dose is employed for its intended purpose.
10. A method as in claim 9, wherein said release layer is placed onto said support surface,
and the unit dose of material is placed onto said placed release layer prior to said
step of inverting and placing said package over the unit dose of material.

aus Glasteilchen beinhaltend Bariumaluminiumborsilitatglas, Bariumaluminiumfluorsilitatglas,
und Gemischen davon,
- wobei die Menge an Glasteilchen (c) pyrogene Kieselsäure umfasst und
- wobei die Füllstoffkomponente umfasst
10 bis 30 Gewichtsprozent Bariumglasteilchen (a);
50 bis 65 Gewichtsprozent Bariumglasteilchen (b);
und 10 bis 30 Gewichtsprozent pyrogene Kieselsäureteilchen (c).
2. Material nach Anspruch 1, worin die polymere Matrix polymerisierbare ungesättigte
Säuremonomere eine mit einer Säure- oder reaktiven Säurederivat-Funktionalität substituierte
Butan-Komponente aufweist.
3. Material nach Anspruch 1, worin die polymere Matrix ein lichthärtbares Harz ist.
4. Material nach Anspruch 3, worin das Harz das Reaktionsprodukt von ethoxyliertem Bisphenol-A-dimethacrylat,
Bisphenol-A-Glycidylmethacrylat, Triethylenglykoldimethacrylat und Hexamethylendiisocyanat
ist.
5. Material nach Anspruch 1, das einen Packungsfähigkeitsindex von mehr als 300 g/mm2 aufweist.
6. Gepacktes photosensitives Material, das in Kombination aufweist:
ein photosensitives Material, das in einer Einheitsdosis ausgebildet und innerhalb
eines Behälters enthalten ist, wobei das photosensitive Material eine polymere Matrix
und eine Füllstoffkomponente, wie in Anspruch 1, aufweist.
7. Gepacktes Material nach Anspruch 6, wobei der Behälter ein nach oben offener Behälter
ist, der eine Basis und mindestens eine nach oben stehende Wand aufweist, sowie darin
einen offenen Bereich;
wobei die nach oben stehende Wand ein erstes Ende aufweist, das zur Basis benachbart
ist, und ein Ende, das zur oberen Öffnung benachbart ist;
wobei das zur oberen Öffnung benachbarte Ende mit einer angrenzenden sich lateral
erstreckenden Bahn ausgebildet ist;
wobei eine Trennschicht an der Bahn entfernbar fixiert ist, und den offenen Bereich
verschließt;
wobei der Behälter und die Trennschicht für mindestens einen Teil des Lichtspektrums,
gegenüber dem die Materialien photosensitiv sind, im wesentlichen nicht durchlässig
sind;
wobei die Einheitsdosis des Materials innerhalb des offenen Bereichs enthalten ist.
8. Gepacktes Material nach Anspruch 7, worin der Behälter aus Polystyrol, Polyethylenterephthalat,
Polyethylen, Polypropylen und Mischungen davon hergestellt ist.
9. Verfahren zum Arbeiten mit einer Einheitsdosis des photosensitiven Materials, das
die Stufen aufweist:
Vorsehen der Einheitsdosis des Materials in einer Packung, worin das Material eine
polymere Matrix und eine Füllstoffkomponente, wie in Anspruch 1 definiert, aufweist;
wobei die Packung einen oben offenen Behälter mit einer Basis und mindestens einer
nach oben stehenden Wand und mit einem offenen Bereich darin aufweist; wobei die nach
oben stehende Wand ein erstes Ende aufweist, das zur Basis benachbart ist, und
ein Ende, das zur oberen Öffnung benachbart ist; wobei das zur oberen Öffnung benachbarte
Ende mit einer angrenzenden sich lateral erstreckenden Bahn ausgebildet ist; wobei
eine Trennschicht an der Bahn entfernbar fixiert ist, und den offenen Bereich verschließt;
wobei der Behälter und die Trennschicht für mindestens einen Teil des Lichtspektrums,
gegenüber dem die Materialien photosensitiv sind, im wesentlichen nicht durchlässig
sind;
Entfernen der Trennschicht von der Packung;
Entfernen der Einheitsdosis des Materials aus der Packung und Aufbringen der Einheitsdosis
des Materials auf eine Trägeroberfläche;
wiederholtes Entfernen eines ausgewählten Anteils der Einheitsdosis des Materials
und Umdrehen und Platzieren der Packung über der Einheitsdosis des Materials auf eine
solche Weise, dass das Licht daran gehindert wird, die Einheitsdosis des Materials
unter dieser Packung zu kontaktieren, wenn der ausgewählte Anteil der Einheitsdosis
für seinen bestimmten Zweck verwendet wird.
10. Verfahren nach Anspruch 9, worin die Trennschicht auf die Trägeroberfläche aufgebracht
wird, und die Einheitsdosis des Materials auf die aufgebrachte Trennschicht vor der
Stufe des Umkehrens und Platzierens der Packung über der Einheitsdosis des Materials
platziert wird.

- ledit matériau comprenant 12 à 18 % en poids de ladite matrice polymère et 80 à
88 % en poids dudit constituant servant de charge ;
- lesdites première et seconde pluralités de particules de verre (a) et (b) sont des
matières identiques ou différentes et sont choisies dans le groupe consistant en des
particules de verre comprenant un verre au borosilicate d'aluminium et de baryum,
un verre à l'aluminofluorosilicate de baryum et leurs mélanges,
- ladite pluralité de particules de charge (c) comprenant de la silice ultrafine,
et
- ledit constituant servant de charge comprend
10 à 30 % en poids de particules de verre au baryum (a) ;
50 à 65 % en poids de particules de verre au baryum (b) ; et
10 à 30 % en poids de particules de silice ultrafine (c).

5. Matériau suivant la revendication 1, ayant un indice de capacité de bourrage supérieur
à 300 g/mm2.
6. Matériau photosensible emballé comprenant en association :
un matériau photosensible formé en une dose unitaire et logé dans un récipient ;
ledit matériau photosensible comprenant une matrice polymère et un constituant servant
de charge répondant à la définition figurant dans la revendication 1.
7. Matériau emballé suivant la revendication 6, dans lequel ledit récipient est un récipient
à partie supérieure ouverte et comprend une base et au moins une paroi droite et possède
une surface libre dans ce récipient ;
ladite au moins une paroi droite ayant une première extrémité proche de ladite base
et une extrémité proche de ladite partie supérieure ouverte ;
ladite extrémité proche de ladite partie supérieure ouverte étant formée de manière
contiguë avec une bande s'étendant latéralement ;
une couche de séparation fixée de manière amovible à ladite bande et enfermant ladite
surface libre ;
ledit récipient et ladite couche de séparation étant pratiquement non aptes à transmettre
au moins une partie du spectre lumineux auquel les matériaux sont photosensibles ;
dans lequel ladite dose unitaire de matériau est logée dans ladite zone libre.
8. Matériau emballé suivant la revendication 7, dans lequel ledit récipient est fabriqué
à partir de polystyrène, de poly(téréphtalate d'éthylène), de polyéthylène, de polypropylène,
et de leurs mélanges.
9. Procédé pour utiliser une dose unitaire de matériau photosensible, comprenant les
étapes consistant :
à prendre la dose unitaire de matériau dans un emballage, ledit matériau comprenant
une matrice polymère et un constituant servant de charge tels que définis dans la
revendication 1 ;
ledit emballage comprenant un récipient à partie supérieure ouverte comportant une
base et au moins une paroi droite et renfermant une zone libre ;
ladite au moins une paroi droite ayant une première extrémité proche de ladite base
et une extrémité proche de ladite partie supérieure ouverte ;
ladite extrémité proche de ladite partie supérieure ouverte étant formée de manière
contiguë avec une bande s'étendant latéralement ;
une couche de séparation fixée de manière amovible à ladite bande et renfermant ladite
zone libre ;
ledit récipient et ladite couche de séparation étant pratiquement non aptes à transmettre
au moins une partie du spectre lumineux auquel les matériaux sont photosensibles ;
à éliminer ladite couche de séparation dudit emballage ;
à éliminer la dose unitaire de matériau dudit emballage et à placer la dose unitaire
de matériau sur une surface de support ;
à prélever de manière répétée une portion choisie de la dose unitaire de matériau
et à inverser et placer ledit emballage sur la dose unitaire de matériau ;
de telle sorte que le contact de la lumière avec la dose unitaire de matériau sous
ledit emballage soit évité lorsque ladite portion choisie de la dose unitaire est
utilisée pour son but envisagé.
10. Procédé suivant la revendication 9, dans lequel ladite couche de séparation est placée
sur ladite surface de support, et la dose unitaire de matériau est placée sur ladite
couche de séparation placée, avant ladite étape d'inversion et de mise en place dudit
emballage sur la dose unitaire de matériau.
