(54) Data reader and reader system having visible centerless targeting

(57) A data reader (10) has a digital image detector (12) an optical system (14) imaging on the digital image detector (12), and a marker beam source (16) that emits a diverging, centerless visible light projection (42). A data reading system includes the data reader (10) and media (20) bearing: a visible primary image (22) and a secondary image (24) overlying the visible image (22). The secondary image (24) is transparent to visible radiation and modulates a band of invisible electromagnetic radiation. The media (20) also bears visible indicia (26) aligned with the secondary image (24).
