(57) An identity badge (10), a vehicle licence plate, and a system for making an identity
badge or licence plate are disclosed. The badge comprises a substrate (20) having
a display surface on which indicia (12,14) are displayed. An overlay (22) is applied
to cover at least part of the display surface of the substrate (20). The overlay (22)
is, at least in part, transparent such that the indicia (12,14) on the display surface
are visible through it. Further indicia (16,24), referred to as "the variable indicia",
are presented on the overlay (22), which are visible in juxtaposition with the indicia
(12,14) on the display surface. The further indicia may include a photographic representation
(24). In a system for making such badges or plates, there may be provided a computer
and a printer for producing the variable indicia (16,24). These may also be hand-written.
The indicia (16,24) on the substrate may be printed in a batch, with a stock of substrates
(20) being kept ready for use.
