(54) Method for the manufacture of the border of a knitted article on circular knitting machines

(57) A method for the manufacture of the border of a knitted article on circular knitting machines is provided as well as the resulting article. The border is manufactured with the needles of the machine. The first needles are selected to initially hold back the respective stitches. The remaining needles, alternated with the first ones, knit until the border is finished. The first needles are then returned to knitting for the subsequent manufacture of the article with the participation of all the needles.

Description

[0001] The present invention pertains to the field of circular knitting machines and, in particular, it pertains to the manufacture of the border of a knitted article on such machines.

[0002] In knitted articles, the border is usually manufactured using hooks or alternated needles, the former being intended to hold back the knitted article, while the needles that are doing the knitting manufacture the border. However, the border ends with a so-called hooking line, which remains exposed on the outside or on the right side of the article and which, as such, is not aesthetically appreciable, preventing its continuity and uniformity with the knitted article.

[0003] The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback by manufacture of the border of a knitted article without resorting to hooking and carried out such that the border is finished from the reverse side, i.e., inside the article, and the knitted article on the right side appears to be more continuous and uniform, on the whole improving the appearance of the article of clothing since the hooking line will not be there.

[0004] This object is accomplished according to the present invention with a method of knitting the border of a knitted article on a circular knitting machine according to which the border is manufactured with the needles of the circular knitting machine. The method further comprises the step of selecting the first needles to initially hold back the respective stitches. The remaining needles knit, alternated with the first ones, until the border is finished. The first needles are then returned to knitting for the subsequent manufacture of the article with the participation of all the needles.

[0005] The invention further provides a knitted article manufactured on circular knitting machine by selecting first needles to initially hold back the respective stitches, where the remaining needles knit, alternated with the first ones, until the border is finished. The first needles are then returned to knitting for the subsequent manufacture of the article with the participation of all the needles. The border of the knitted article is advantageously manufactured as mentioned above without hooking operations.

[0006] The method is described in detail below, and the resulting border is schematically shown by way of indication in the attached drawing.

[0007] The various features of novelty which characterize the invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this disclosure. For a better understanding ofthe invention, its operating advantages and specific objects attained by its uses, reference is made to the accompanying drawing and descriptive matter in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

In the drawings:

[0008] The only Figure is a schematic view showing the border resulting from the method according to the invention.

[0009] Referring to the drawings in particular, the border B of a clothing article I is manufactured with the needles of a knitting machine. Initially, stitches (at least one rotation) are made on all the needles of the machine. Then, the first needles are selected to hold back the respective stitches. The remaining needles, alternated with the first ones which hold back the stitches, knit until the border B is finished. At this point, the first needles are returned to knitting for the manufacture of the article with the participation of all the needles of the machine. Thus, the line L of completion of the border will correspond to the line of return to knitting of the needles that initially held back the stitches. In each case, the hooking effect will not be present, and on the right side D, i.e., on the exposed side, the knitted article will be continuous and uniform.

[0010] While a specific embodiment ofthe invention has been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the principles of the invention, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.

Claims

1. A method for manufacturing a border of a knitted article on a circular knitting machine, according to which the said border is manufactured with needles of the machine and the method further comprising the steps of:

selecting first needles to initially hold back the respective stitches;

knitting with the remaining needles, alternated with the first ones, until the border is finished;

subsequent to said step of knitting, returning the first needles to knitting for the subsequent manufacture of the article with the participation of all the needles.

2. A knitted article manufactured on a circular knitting machine, the article being formed by the steps comprising:

selecting first needles to initially hold back the respective stitches;

knitting with the remaining needles, alternated with the first ones, until the border is finished;

subsequent to said step of knitting, returning the first needles to knitting for the subsequent manufacture of the article with the participation of all the needles, whereby the article border is manufactured without hooking operations.
