(54) Authentication of banknotes


(57) A method for authentication of bank notes involves analysing light received from a surface of the bank note and comparing properties of the light with reference properties pertaining to a genuine such surface. The properties are compared with reference to transitions at edges of design material on the surface. The bank note is advanced through a chamber (3) on a support belt (4) where it is illuminated by monochromatic light sources (5). Reflected light is received by a scanner (6).
