(57) A method and unit (1) for longitudinally fringing a strip (2) of wrapping material, wherein the strip (2) is step-fed through a fringing device (10), and, at each stop, the portion (2b) of the strip (2) at the fringing device (10) is gripped between two jaws (14, 15) defining at least one comb (32), which extends along a longitudinal edge (2a) of the strip (2) and is engaged by a series of blades (38) arranged combfashion along a fringing roller (36).
