[0001] The present invention relates to swimming goggles, in particular to swimming goggles
comprising a unitary member including a lens frame main unit, a nose bridge and a
protective pad, wherein the protective pad serves to combine two lens frames in the
same framework to provide wearer comfort whilst allowing lenses to be firmly assembled
within the lens frames to prevent water seepage.
[0002] Swimming goggles are used widely for example for snorkelling, scuba diving or swimming
(
eg in swimming pools). For pool swimmers who need to regulate their breathing above
water, swimming goggles must have a nose bridge to facilitate the breathing action.
For snorkellers or scuba divers who spend more time in deep water, swimming goggles
are made to cover their eyes and nose to avoid water pressure causing discomfort to
the nose. Conventional swimming goggles for pool swimmers have two lens frames pressing
on the muscles around the eyes. The installation of a protective pad may put pressure
on the muscles around the eyes leading to user discomfort and possible water seepage
as muscles twitch in response to the discomfort.
[0003] The primary object of the invention is to provide swimming goggles for swimming pool
swimmers comprising a protective pad that serves simultaneously as a face mask to
provide comfortable face contact whilst combining two lens frames in a single lens
frame main unit to allow a unique, convenient and reliable method of assembling lenses
with the lens frames.
[0004] Thus viewed from one aspect the present invention provides swimming goggles comprising:
two lenses made of a rigid material connected by a joining part and having edges on
the rim of the two lenses;
a first unitary member made of a flexible material including:
a lens frame main unit having two lens frames;
a nose bridge; and
a protective pad, wherein on each lens frame is a frame opening to accommodate a lens,
each frame opening having a groove to accommodate the edges of a lens; and
a headband device including a headband connected to the outside edge of said two lenses,
whereby the edges of the two lenses are fitted in the grooves in the frame openings
of the lens frames of the first unitary member so as to fasten the two lenses onto
the lens frames of the lens frame main unit.
[0005] The invention advantageously allows the grooves in the frame openings of the lens
frames of the lens frame main unit to co-operate with the edges of the rim of the
two lenses so that the lenses and the lens frames can be readily assembled together.
[0006] A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises:
at least one positioning groove between the frame openings of the lens frames of the
lens frame main unit; and
a stop unit on the joining part between the two lenses and opposite to the positioning
groove,
whereby in use the two lenses and the lens frames of the lens frame main unit can
be assembled securely.
[0007] A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises:
a fixing device for connecting the headband located on the outside of the longer axis
of the lenses, whereby the two rigid lenses support the force when the swimming goggles
are worn to ensure that water is prevented from seeping through.
[0008] A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises:
a reinforcing unit between the lens frames of the lens frame main unit and near the
nose bridge.
[0009] The present invention will now be described in a non-limitative sense with reference
to the accompanying Figures in which:

Figure 4 is a sectional view along A-A in Figure 2;
Figures 5, 6, 7 and 8 illustrate assembly of an embodiment of the swimming goggles
of the invention;
Figure 9 illustrates a close-up of a fixing device in accordance with an embodiment
of the swimming goggles of the invention assembled into a lens frame of a lens frame
unit; and
Figure 10 illustrates the location of an embodiment of the swimming goggles of the
invention on a users face.
[0010] With reference to Figure 1, the swimming goggles designated generally by reference
numeral 1 comprise a first unitary member made of a flexible material including a
lens frame main unit having two lens frames 10 and 10', a nose bridge 11 and a protective
pad 12. The swimming goggles 1 further comprise a second unitary member made of a
rigid material having a joining part 14 between two lenses 13 and 13' and a headband
device designated generally by reference numeral 18. The two lens frames 10 and 10"
of the lens frame main unit have frame openings 101 and 101' respectively and inside
the frame openings 101 and 101' are grooves 102 and 102' used to position two lenses
13 and 13'.
[0011] With reference to Figure 3, a first positioning groove 103 near the nose bridge 11
and between the frame openings 101 and 101' comprises a recessed dent formed on the
frame openings 101 and 101'. In addition, between the left and right ends of the positioning
groove 103 is a second positioning groove 104 in the shape of a V such that the first
and second positioning grooves 103 and 104 may cooperate with the joining part 14
to secure the whole assembly (described hereinafter). On the frame openings 101 and
101' and near the nose bridge 11 is a reinforcing unit 15 to further strengthen the
frame openings 101 and 101'. The protective pad 12 extends outwardly from the edge
of the frame openings 101 and 101' of the lens frames 10 and 10' of the lens frame
main unit thereby creating a height difference from the lens frame main unit and excellent
flexibility whilst covering the upper and lower edges of the users eyes (see Figure
10) to provide comfortable face contact.
[0012] On the rims of the two lenses 13 and 13' are edges 131 and 131' which can co-operate
with the grooves 102 and 102'. On the joining part 14 between the two lenses 13 and
13' is a first stop part 141 that may be fitted on the first dent-shaped positioning
groove 103 on the frame openings 101 and 101' (see Figure 2). On the joining part
14 is a V-shaped stop unit 142 that can be fitted into the V-shaped second positioning
groove 104 (see Figure 4). With reference to Figure 1, on the outside edge of the
longer axis of the two lenses 13 and 13' is a fixing device 16, said fixing device
including: a snap groove 161 on the lenses 13 and 13' and a joining plate 162 that
may be inserted into the snap groove 161, wherein the two sides of the joining plate
162 are a combining arm 163 and a leading surface 164, said combining arm 163 being
positioned so that it can rest on the rear of the bottom of a guide surface 167 on
the two sides of the snap groove 161 (not shown) and having two protruding, opposing
snap units 166. On the leading surface 164 are several throughholes 165 to accommodate
the insertion of a headband 180 in the headband device 18. Snap holes 168 on the lens
frame main unit 10, 10' accommodate the snap units 166 whereby to achieve the function
of accommodation and positioning (refer to Figure 5). Furthermore, with reference
to Figure 1a, between snap units 166 is a stop plate 169 (as shown in Figure 9) which
prevents loosening in the groove 102 (102') on the lens frame main unit 10, 10' by
pressing against a stop plate 109 when the joining plate 162 is inserted into the
snap groove 161. As a result, the inserted groove 102 (102') will not slip outwardly
and escape. Furthermore, the joining plate 162 presses against the rear of the end
of the guide surface 167 by means of a snap unit 166 on the combining arm 163 on both
sides. Meanwhile, the snap unit 166 and the snap holes 168 are fastened in position
to prevent the joining plate 162 from escaping.
[0013] For simplicity, Figures 5, 6, 7 and 8 show only the lenses 13 and 13' and the lens
frame main unit 10, 10', the nose bridge 11 and the protective pad 12. For the purposes
of assembly, a section of the two lenses 13 and 13' is pulled out from one side of
the protective pad 12 and (as indicated by the arrow) the groove 102 on the lens frame
10 is inserted into the edge 131 of the lens 13 (shown in Figure 6). The lens frame
10' on the other side is then pulled back as in Figure 7 so that the lens 13' on the
other side is located at the front (as indicated by the arrows in Figures 7 and 8).
The groove 102' is fitted onto the edge 131' and the two lenses 13 and 13' are then
assembled with the unitary member comprising the lens frame main unit 10, 10', the
nose bridge 11 and the protective pad 12. By virtue of the engagement between the
grooves 102, 102' and the edges 131, 131', between the first stop part 141 on the
joining part 14 and the dent shape first positioning groove 103 and between the V-shaped
stop unit 142 and the V-shaped second positioning groove 104 on the joining part 14
(see Figures 2 and 4), the two lenses 13 and 13' and the unitary member comprising
the lens frame main unit 10, 10', the nose bridge 11 and the protective pad 12 can
be assembled more firmly. Thus the aforementioned construction of the embodiment of
the invention will not only provide the user with better comfort and freedom from
water leakage it also provides more convenient and secure assembly.
