(57) A machine for softening the surface of a continuous fabric (26; 126) comprises at least one row (4a; 4b; 104a) of rotating roller brushes (4; 104) in which each roller brush (4; 104) is operationally connected to a respective motor unit (12) capable of causing it to rotate at a predefined speed and in a predefined direction of rotation; at least one penetrating element (13; 113) for varying the winding angle of the fabric on a brush (4; 104); suction means (18-22, 130; 118-122, 230) capable of removing fine fibrous dust; an extension roller (27; 127) provided with load sensors able to detect the tension of said fabric (26; 126); and at least one additional rotating roller brush (4c) capable of exerting an additional brushing action on a second surface (26b) of said fabric; each roller brush (4; 104; 4c) being provided with bunches (10) of filaments (9).
