(57) In a metallic gasket(1,30,40,50,60,90) having a metallic sheet made with a recess(10,11,22,23,77,95,96)
surrounding around a diverse type of hole(3,4,6,7,71a, 72a), in which an elastic sealing
member(15,16,78,97,98) is installed, a relation between the recess and the elastic
sealing member in their cross sections(RS) and also configurations is so specified
as to use the elastic sealing member within a range of elastic limit inherent in the
elastic sealing member, thereby improving the sealing performance of the metallic
gasket. The elastic sealing member installed in the recess formed around the hole
such as combustion hole(3) and so on is composed of a top(18) extending above a major
side(12) of the metallic sheet(2), and a bottom (20) having a cross section reaching
widthwise opposing side surfaces(14) of the recess. The elastic sealing member is
made not more than the recess in their cross section(SB+ST) perpendicular to the major
side(12) of the metallic sheet(2). Thus, the elastic sealing member, when the metallic
gasket is squeezed, may serve its useful function within the range of inherent elastic
limit. This helps ensure the properly tight and enduring sealing condition, thereby
keeping the gasket against premature degradation and any collapse.
