(54)	Automatic gain control with noise suppression

(57) Audio processing apparatus (40) includes a a noise suppression stage (42), which applids a variable level of noise suppression to an input audio signal, so as to generate a noise-suppressed signal, and an automatic gain control (AGC) stage (44), coupled to apply a variable gain to the noise-suppressed signal, responsive to a level of the signal. A noise controller (46) receives an indication of the gain from the AGC stage and determines the level of noise suppression to be applied by the noise suppression stage responsive to the gain.
