(57) A drive unit for gates (1) comprises at least one vertical column (2), fixed at one end to a tread surface (3), and supporting a mobile part (4) of the gate (1) from a position in which the gate (1) is closed to a position in which the gate is opened by motor-driven means (5). The motor-driven means (5) are housed in the vertical column (2) and connected to the mobile part (4) by means of the column.
