(57) A device management system (10) and method for use with a computer network (18) are provided. The method typically includes, in response to connection of the device (16) to the network (18), sending a message from the device (16) to the management application (22) via a well-known communication channel, announcing the presence of the device (16) on the network (18). The device (16) may be preconfigured with an agent (28a) and a codelet (34a) pair, and the method may include sending the agent (28a) from the device (16) to the management server (12). The method may also include setting a policy from the management application (22) governing codelet operations on the device (16). The method may further include subscribing from the management application (22) for notifications of codelet (34a) changes on the device (16).
