[0001] The present invention relates in general to instruments for manual writing, such
as pencils, felt pens, ball-point pens, and the like.
[0002] The object of the invention is to provide an instrument for manual writing having
a new and unique configuration designed to achieve particular effectiveness and convenience
of application both when the instrument is being used and when it is laid on a resting
surface.
[0003] The instrument for manual writing according to the present invention has a body with
a generally cylindrical shape and a circular cross section, with a single longitudinal
flattened part.
[0004] In other words, the instrument for manual writing according to the invention has
a generally cylindrical body with a cross section which is for the most part circular
and for the remaining part rectilinear.
[0005] Thanks to this idea of solution, the instrument for manual writing according to the
invention is not only easier and more convenient to grip during use, but when it is
released or put down on a horizontal resting surface it will position itself constantly
with its longitudinal flattened part in contact with said resting surface. In this
way, the area of the part of the body with circular cross section set opposite to
the flattened part will constantly face upwards, and hence it will be clearly visible
to an observer. The said area can be usefully and advantageously used for application
of wordings (alphanumeric symbols, logos, etc.) for promotional or advertising purposes,
or in any case for identification purposes.
[0006] The invention will now be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings,
which are provided purely by way of non-limiting example and in which:
- Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of an instrument for manual writing according
to the invention;
- Figure 2 is a view similar to that of Figure 1, but rotated through 180° about the
axis of the writing instrument; and
- Figure 3 is an elevation according to the arrow III of Figure 1.
[0007] In the drawings, reference numeral 1 designates a pencil, which constitutes an instrument
for manual writing according to the invention.
[0008] The pencil 1 has an axially elongated body 2 having a generally cylindrical shape,
the cross section of which, as may be seen in greater detail in Figure 3, is for the
most part 3 circular. The angular amplitude of the part with circular cross section
3 is considerably greater than 180°, and is, for example, close to 270°.
[0009] The remaining part of the body 2, designated as 4, is rectilinear. In other words,
the cylindrical body with circular cross section, which constitutes the body 2, presents
a single longitudinal flattened part defining the rectilinear part 4 of its cross
section, which extends throughout the length of the body 2.
[0010] Thanks to the above arrangement, the body 2 of the writing instrument 1 can be gripped
in a more convenient and practical way by the user, who can put his forefinger or
thumb resting on the flattened part 4. The aforesaid flattened part has moreover the
effect, when the writing instrument 1 is put down or even simply released on a resting
horizontal surface, of positioning the writing instrument 1 constantly in the configuration
in which the longitudinal flattened part 4 rests stably on said surface. In this way,
the area of the circular section 3 set opposite to the flattened part 4 comes to be,
in this condition, constantly facing upwards, and consequently clearly visible to
an observer. This area may conveniently have a section 5, more or less extensive in
the longitudinal direction, for applying wordings, graphical symbols, and the like,
simply for purposes of identification, or even for promotional or advertising purposes.
[0011] Of course the effects of the present invention extend to models that achieve the
same degree of utility, using the same innovative idea. Consequently, even though
the invention has been described with express reference to a pencil, it may be equally
usefully applied to any instrument for manual writing having an elongated body, such
as a felt pen, a fountain pen, a ball-point pen, and the like.
[0012] Of course, the details of construction and the embodiments may vary widely with respect
to what is described and illustrated herein purely by way of example, without thereby
departing from the scope of the present invention as defined in the ensuing claims.
1. An instrument for manual writing (1) having a body (2) with a cross section that is
generally circular (3) with a single longitudinal flattened part (4).

a cross section that is for the most part circular (3) and for the remaining part
rectilinear (4).
3. The instrument for manual writing (1) according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterized in that said part with circular cross section (3) extends for an angular amplitude considerably
greater than 180 degrees.
4. The instrument for manual writing (1) according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterized in that said body (2) bears, on said part with circular cross section (3), wordings or graphic
symbols (5) that are visible when said instrument lies on a horizontal supporting
plane, resting on said flattened part (4), or, respectively, on said rectilinear part
(4) of its cross section.
5. The instrument for manual writing (1) according to any one of the preceding claims,
characterized in that it consists of a pencil (1), or felt pen, or ball-point pen, and the like.
