ILLUMINATED SIGNALLING DEVICE FOR PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS |
(57) The invention relates to an illuminated signalling device for pedestrian crossings,
comprising a support which is fixed to the pavement and which is used to house all
of the mechanisms necessary for the operation thereof. The invention also comprises
a timed push button which is disposed on the aforementioned support at a height of
approximately one metre above the ground and which is used to start the device. The
upper part of the support comprises an illuminated panel displaying the graphic signal
which indicates the existence of a pedestrian crossing. Moreover, the rear of said
illuminated panel is designed such that easily-replaceable advertising can be housed
therein and, if necessary, an acoustic system for the visually impaired can be installed,
which is activated simultaneously with the illuminated panel. The inventive device
is preferably connected to the low-voltage network of the public thoroughfare or,
under other circumstances, mechanisms for the use of alternative energy sources can
be installed. According to the invention, one signal is provided for each direction
and if more than one unit is to be installed at the same pedestrian crossing, said
units are connected by means of under-pavement wiring.

OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The object of this invention is to reduce the number of casualties caused by runovers.
The invention comprises a vertical illuminated traffic sign which serves to show pedestrian
crossings without traffic lights, and which can be turned on by the pedestrians themselves.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The device of the invention shows a new structure that comprises a stand fixed to
the road surface, which houses inside all the necessary mechanisms for its proper
operation.
[0003] Such stand comprises an easily identifiable, timer-controlled push button, at an
approximate height of one meter, the purpose of which is to turn on the device.
[0004] An illuminated panel is attached to the upper part of the stand, at a height of two
meters. Such panel sets off the graphic sign that shows the presence of a pedestrian
crossing. Furthermore, the back of the illuminated panel is foreseen so that it may
be adapted to house advertising items that can be easily replaced.
[0005] The device will preferably be connected to the Low Voltage Network of the public
road system, and meets the R.E.B.T. regulations in force.
[0006] Under any other circumstances, mechanisms will be installed to exploit alternative
power sources.
[0007] If necessary, an acoustic system for visually impaired pedestrians will be installed,
and will be activated simultaneously with the illuminated panel.
[0008] One signal will be available for each direction of the traffic. If more than one
unit must be installed at the same pedestrian crossing, they will be connected by
means of wires running under the road surface.
[0009] The device will preferably be manufactured using anti-vandalism materials.
[0010] To complement the following description, and to better understand the characteristics
of the invention, a set of drawings is attached to the following detailed description.
On the basis of such figures, the innovations and advantages of the device object
of the invention will be understood more easily.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0011]
Figure 1.- Shows a front view of the device.
Figure 2.- Shows a cross-section of one of the sides of the device.
1. Illuminated signalling device for pedestrian crossings, characterized in that it comprises a stand (4) anchored to the road surface (2) which houses an accessible
(6) transformer (5) inside such stand, and in that the outer part comprises a turning-on system comprising an information display (8)
and a timer-controlled push button (7) that turns on an illuminated panel (9) and,
if necessary, an acoustic system for the visually impaired (13), such panel being
fixed to the back of the stand and showing the pedestrian crossing sign (11), the
back part being reserved for advertising (10).
Amended claims under Art. 19.1 PCT
1. Illuminated signalling device for pedestrian crossings, of the type comprising a
stand (4) fixed to the road surface (2) which houses a transformer (5) with an accessible
area (6) and turning-on means, comprising an information display (8) and a timer-controlled
push button (7) characterized in that it comprises an illuminated panel (9) and an acoustic system (13) for the visually
impaired, such illuminated panel incorporating the pedestrian crossing sign (11),
the back part (10) comprising an area for advertising.
