A hinge-lid smoking articles pack, and a blank for making a hinge-lid smoking articles pack

[0001] The present invention relates to hinge-lid packs for cigarettes or similar smoking articles, preferably of the type where the pack content is surrounded on all sides by a separate foil-like wrapping and where an inner frame or collar is arranged so as to protect the smoking articles. Numerous examples of such packs are known in the art, see for example EP 905 054, or WO 03/078 174.
Normally such packs are made from a flat cardboard blank which is folded and to which the inner frame is connected, such as by glue. The cardboard blank has a front surface and a rear surface, the front surface defining the outer surfaces of the pack, i.e. those surfaces that are generally visible to the consumer when the lid is closed, such as when purchasing the pack. The outer surfaces of the pack carry a printed text, as discussed in EP 905 054, including information about the smoking article brand and also the health hazard warnings that have lately been required by the health authorities. It has been suggested to additionally provide the aforementioned wrapping with a printed text, see EP 905 054.

[0002] To allow for such packs to include even more consumer related information various proposals have been made. US patent 6 199 688 suggests additionally providing the inner frame with a printed text, and it has been suggested to design the pack such that a separate coupon or brochure may be laid inside, see US patents no. 5 375 704 and 6 742 652.

[0003] All of the above prior art packs each require different types of specialized printing machinery and, hence, do not allow for different consumer related information to be presented to the consumer in a cost effective way.

[0004] The present invention provides for an improved hinge-lid pack for cigarettes or similar smoking articles, as defined in claim 1, and a blank for making such a pack, as defined in claim 9, whereby a large amount of information may be presented to the consumer in a cost-effective way.

[0005] The pack is such that lid top wall side flaps inside the lid partially cover the top wall of the lid, for example to enhance the rigidity of the pack, with a relatively large area of the inside surface of the lid top wall being exposed to the consumer upon opening the pack. Through the embodiment of claim 14 the blank may be used readily in many of the folding machines available.

[0006] A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be explained in further details with reference to the drawings.

[0008] In the following, when the term "blank" is used it will be understood that reference is thereby made to a thin sheet, preferably of cardboard or similar material, which is foldable to erect a pack for a smoking article and which has opposite surfaces. Blanks of this type are normally folded using automated folding machinery that engages the blank to fold parts of the blank about fold lines to erect the pack.

[0009] Fig. 1 shows the front surface of a prior art blank 1. The front surface carries, as is conventional, printed information, such as the brand and the name of the manufacturer of the tobacco article within the pack subsequently made through erection of the blank 1. The pack has a base and a lid 2, as also shown in fig. 2.

[0010] The blank 1 comprises a base front wall 4, a base bottom wall 10, base back wall 13a, lid back wall 13b, lid top wall 12 and lid front wall 5.

[0011] The base front wall 4 has side margins 14 and side flaps 15 depending therefrom. The base back wall 13a has side flaps 11a depending from margins thereof. When the pack is erected side flaps 11 a rest inside side flaps 15, and may, if desired, be attached thereto by glue. The base side walls 11a have bottom margins 16 and base bottom wall inner flaps 17 depending therefrom. When the pack is erected, base bottom wall inner flaps 17 rest inside base bottom wall 10 and may, if desired, be attached thereto, such as by glue.

[0012] The lid back wall 13b has side margins 18 and side flaps 19. The side flaps 19 have top margins 20 and lid top wall side flaps 21 depending therefrom. The top wall side flaps 21 are defined by cuts 22' and 22" by which the flaps 21 are partially freed so as to be foldable, and by fold line 20 along the top margin of the side flaps 19.

[0013] When the pack is erected the side flaps 19 rest inside, and may be secured to, lid side walls 6. The two lid top wall side flaps 21 rest inside the lid, normally flatly against the lid top wall 12, and may, if desired, be secured to the lid top wall 12.

[0014] In folded condition, the blank forms the pack shown in fig. 2. As shown, the lid top wall side flaps 21 extend inside the lid 2, covering a substantial part of the lid top wall 12.

[0015] Fig. 3 shows an embodiment of the invention wherein a consumer-directed text is printed on the (not visible) rear surface of the blank used for forming the pack, in addition to the text (not shown) normally printed on the visible surface of the blank, which surface forms the external face of the pack. In this embodiment, only the part of the rear surface of the blank within the area forming the lid top wall 12 is provided with printed text T, this area with text T being readily visible by the consumer when the lid is moved to the open position shown in the figure through no part of the blank covering the text T.

[0016] The pack shown in fig. 3 includes an inner frame 1', and a bundle of cigarettes contained therein is wrapped in a foil 1". As shown, the lid top wall 12 is partially covered by the lid top wall side flaps 21 that each is cut such as to have a side edge 22' following a special contour, as will be explained further below.

[0017] Fig. 4 shows a blank 1 used for making the pack of fig. 3. The blank of fig. 4 differs mainly from the one of fig. 1 in that the rear surface of the blank is provided with a printed text T within the area of lid top wall 12, and in that the respective side edge 22' defining in part the lid top wall side flaps 21 extends along an arc or any other curve such that the lid top wall side flaps 21 have a generally decreased width in direction from the fold line 20 towards the opposite extremity or end 23 of the lid top wall side flaps 21. Through such a general variation in the width of the lid top wall side flaps 21 any text T printed on the rear surface of the blank 1 in the area of the lid top wall 12 is made visible when the pack is erected. The lid top wall side flaps 21 preferably have a combined area, i.e. corresponding to twice the area of each side flap 21 shown in fig. 4 (when identical), of at most between about 2% and about 50%, preferably between about 10% and about 45%, preferably between 11 % and 44% of the area of the lid top wall 12 between fold lines 12' and 12" and cuts 22".

[0018] It is noted that a design of the lid top wall side flaps 21 whereby the flaps 21 each have a reduced width with - preferably slightly rounded - end 23 thereof located near or adjacent the edge (coincident with fold line 12') of lid front wall side wall 6, as shown in fig. 4, may be desired depending on the type of folding machinery used to normally fold top wall side flaps.

[0019] In other embodiments of the invention the lid top wall side flaps 21, if required at all, may each extend only by a small distance from the fold line 20, such as by no more than between 5% and 10% of the extension of the lid top wall 12 measured between cuts 22", and be delimited by the cut 22" and an edge 22' extending generally parallel with the fold line 20.

Claims

1. A hinge-lid cigarettes or similar smoking articles pack, said pack having a base with a base front wall (4), a base back wall (13a), a base bottom wall (10), and base side walls (15), and a lid (2) with a lid front wall (5), a lid top wall (12), and lid side walls (6), said pack being made from a blank (1), preferably a cardboard blank, which is folded to define said base and said lid (2) of said pack, said blank (1) having a front surface defining the outer face of the pack and carrying printed information thereon, and a rear surface,
characterised in
that the rear surface of the blank (1) carries printed information on the lid top wall (12) and being visible upon the lid (2) being moved to an open position, said pack including lid top wall side flaps (21) inside the lid (2) covering said lid top wall (5) and having a combined area of at most between about 2% and about 55% of the area of said lid top wall (5).

2. A hinge-lid pack according to claim 1 wherein the lid top wall side flaps (21) inside the lid (2) covering said lid top wall (5) and having a combined area of between about 10% and about 45% of the area of said lid top wall (5).

3. A hinge-lid pack according to claim 1 wherein the lid top wall side flaps (21) inside the lid (2) covering said lid top wall (5) and having a combined area of between 11 % and 40% of the area of said lid top wall (5).

4. A hinge-lid pack according to claim 1 wherein the lid top wall side flaps (21) inside the lid (2) covering said lid top wall (5) and having a combined area of at most 30% of the area of said lid top wall (5).

5. A hinge-lid pack according to claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 wherein the rear surface of said blank (1) only carries information (T) printed on the lid top wall (12) and being visible upon the lid (2) being moved to an open position.

6. A hinge-lid pack according to one of the claims 1 - 5, said printed information including consumer-directed text (T).

7. A hinge-lid pack according to any of the preceding claims, said pack including a lid back wall (13b) with side flaps (19), said lid top wall side flaps (21) depending from said side flaps (19).

8. A hinge-lid pack according to any of the preceding claims, said pack including an inner frame (1') arranged so as to protect said smoking articles.

9. A blank (1) for folding for forming a hinge-lid cigarettes or similar smoking articles pack, said pack having a base and a lid (2), said blank (1) defining a base front wall (4), a base back wall (13a), a base bottom wall (10), and base side walls (15), and a lid (2) with a lid front wall (5), a lid top wall (12), and lid side walls (6, 19), said blank (1) having a front surface defining the outer face of said pack and carrying printed information thereon, and a rear surface,
characterised in
that the rear surface of the blank (1) carries printed information on the lid top wall (12) and being visible upon the lid (2) being moved to an open position, said blank (1) including lid top wall side flaps (21) which in the folded configuration are located inside the lid (2) covering said lid top wall (5) and having a combined area of at most between about 2% and about 55% of the area of said lid top wall (5).

10. A hinge-lid pack according to claim 9 wherein the lid top wall side flaps (21) inside the lid (2) covering said lid top wall (5) and having a combined area of between about 10% and about 45% of the area of said lid top wall (5).

11. A hinge-lid pack according to claim 9 wherein the lid top wall side flaps (21) inside the lid (2) covering said lid top wall (5) and having a combined area of between 11 % and 40% of the area of said lid top wall (5).

12. A hinge-lid pack according to claim 9 wherein the lid top wall side flaps (21) inside the lid (2) covering said lid top wall (5) and having a combined area of at most 30% of the area of said lid top wall (5).

13. A blank according to claim 9, 10 11 or 12 wherein the rear surface of the blank (1) only carries information printed on the lid top wall (12).

14. A blank according to claim 13, said lid top wall side flaps (21) having a reduced width in direction from said lid top wall (12).

15. A blank according to claim 14, said lid top side flaps (21) each having an end (23) located adjacent a lid side wall (6), said end (23) preferably being rounded.

16. A blank according to any of the preceding claims 9-15, said printed information including consumer-directed text (T).

17. A blank according to any of the preceding claims 9-16, said pack including a lid back wall (13b) with side flaps (19), said lid top side flaps (21) depending from said side flaps (19).

Ansprüche

1. Scharnierdeckelpackung für Zigaretten oder ähnliche Rauchwaren, wobei die Packung einen Grundteil mit einer Grundteil-Stirnwand (4), einer Grundteil-Rückwand (13a), einer Grundteil-Bodenwand (10) und Grundteil-Seitenwänden (15) sowie einen Deckel (2) mit einer Deckel-Stirnwand (5), einer Deckel-Oberwand (12) und Deckel-Seitenwänden (6) aufweist, wobei die Packung aus einem Rohling (1), vorzugsweise aus einem Kartonrohling gefertigt ist, der zum Ausbilden des Grundteils und des Deckels (2) der Packung gefaltet wird, wobei der Rohling (1) eine Vorderfläche zum Ausbilden der Außenseite der Packung und zum Tragen von darauf aufgedruckten Informationen und eine Rückfläche aufweist,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass
die Rückfläche des Rohlings (1) auf der Deckel-Oberwand (12) aufgedruckte Informationen trägt, die auf dem Deckel (2) sichtbar sind, wenn er in eine geöffnete Position bewegt wird, wobei die Packung im Deckel (2) Deckel-Oberwandseitenklappen (21) aufweist, die die Deckel-Oberwand (5) abdecken und eine kombinierte Fläche von höchstens etwa 2% bis etwa 55% der Fläche der Deckel-Oberwand (5) aufweisen.

2. Scharnierdeckelpackung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Deckel-Oberwandseitenklappen (21) in dem Deckel (2) die Deckel-Oberwand (5) abdecken und eine kombinierte Fläche von etwa 10% bis etwa 45% der Fläche der Deckel-Oberwand (5) aufweisen.

3. Scharnierdeckelpackung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Deckel-Oberwandseitenklappen (21) in dem Deckel (2) die Deckel-Oberwand (5) abdecken und eine kombinierte Fläche von 11 % bis 40% der Fläche der Deckel-Oberwand (5) abdecken.

4. Scharnierdeckelpackung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Deckel-Oberwandseitenklappen (21) in dem Deckel (2) die Deckel-Oberwand (5) abdecken und eine kombinierte Fläche von höchstens 30% der Fläche der Deckel-Oberwand (5) aufweisen.

5. Scharnierdeckelpackung nach Anspruch 1, 2, 3 oder 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Rückfläche des Rohlings (1) nur Informationen (T) trägt, die auf der Deckel-Oberwand (12) aufgedruckt sind und die auf dem Deckel (2) sichtbar sind, wenn er in eine geöffnete Position bewegt wird.

6. Scharnierdeckelpackung nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, wobei die aufgedruckten Informationen für den Verbraucher gedachten Text (T) umfassen.

7. Scharnierdeckelpackung nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei die Packung eine Deckel-Rückwand (13b) mit Seitenklappen (19) umfasst, wobei die Deckel-Oberwandseitenklappen (21) von den Seitenklappen (19) hängen.

8. Scharnierdeckelpackung nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei die Packung einen so angeordneten Innenrahmen (1') umfasst, dass er die Rauchwaren schützt.

9. Rohling (1) zum Falten zum Ausbilden einer Scharnierdeckelpackung für Zigaretten oder ähnliche Rauchwaren, wobei die Packung einen Grundteil und einen Deckel (2) aufweist, wobei der Rohling (1) eine Grundteil-Stirnwand (4), eine Grundteil-Rückwand (13a), eine Grundteil-Bodenwand (10) und Grundteil-Seitenwände (15) sowie einen Deckel (2) mit einer Deckel-Stirnwand (5), einer Deckel-Oberwand (12) und Deckel-Seitenwänden (6, 19) ausbildet, wobei der Rohling (1) eine Vorderfläche, die die Außenseite der Packung ausbildet und darauf aufgedruckte Informationen trägt, und eine Rückfläche aufweist,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass
die Rückfläche des Rohlings (1) auf der Deckel-Oberwand (12) aufgedruckte Informationen trägt, die auf dem Deckel (2) sichtbar sind, wenn er in eine geöffnete Position bewegt wird, wobei der Rohling (1) Deckel-Oberwandseitenklappen (21) umfasst, die sich in der gefalteten Auslegung in dem Deckel (2) befinden und die Deckel-Oberwand (5) abdecken und eine kombinierte Fläche von höchstens etwa 2% bis etwa 55% der Fläche der Deckel-Oberwand (5) aufweisen.

10. Scharnierdeckelpackung nach Anspruch 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Deckel-Oberwandseitenklappen (21) in dem Deckel (2) die Deckel-Oberwand (5) abdecken und eine kombinierte Fläche von etwa 10% bis etwa 45% der Fläche der Deckel-Oberwand (5) aufweisen.

11. Scharnierdeckelpackung nach Anspruch 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Deckel-Oberwandseitenklappen (21) in dem Deckel (2) die Deckel-Oberwand (5) abdecken und eine kombinierte Fläche von 11 % bis 40% der Fläche der Deckel-Oberwand (5) aufweisen.

12. Scharnierdeckelpackung nach Anspruch 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Deckel-Oberwandseitenklappen (21) in dem Deckel (2) die Deckel-Oberwand (5) abdecken und eine kombinierte Fläche von höchstens 30% der Fläche der Deckel-Oberwand (5) aufweisen.

13. Rohling nach Anspruch 9, 10, 11 oder 12, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Rückfläche des Rohlings (1) nur auf die Deckel-Oberwand (12) aufgedruckte Informationen trägt.

14. Rohling nach Anspruch 13, wobei die Deckel-Oberwandseitenklappen (21) in Richtung von der Deckel-Oberwand (12) eine verringerte Breite aufweisen.

15. Rohling nach Anspruch 14, wobei die Deckeloberseitenklappen (21) jeweils ein angrenzend an eine Deckel-Seitenwand (6) positioniertes Ende (23) aufweisen, wobei das Ende (23) vorzugsweise abgerundet ist.

16. Rohling nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche 9 bis 15, wobei die aufgedruckten Informationen für den Verbraucher gedachten Text (T) umfassen.

17. Rohling nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche 9 bis 16, wobei die Packung eine Deckel-Rückwand (13b) mit Seitenklappen (19) umfasst, wobei die Deckel-Oberseitenklappen (21) von den Seitenklappen (19) hängen.

Revendications

1. Paquet de cigarettes ou d'articles à fumer similaires à couvercle rabattable, ledit paquet ayant une base avec une paroi avant de base (4), une paroi arrière de base (13a), une paroi inférieure de base (10), des parois latérales de base (15), et un couvercle (2) avec une paroi avant de couvercle (5), une paroi supérieure de couvercle (12) et des parois latérales de couvercle (6), ledit paquet étant réalisé à partir d'une découpe (1), de préférence une découpe en carton, qui est pliée pour définir ladite base et ledit couvercle (2) dudit paquet, ladite découpe (1) ayant une surface avant définissant la face externe du paquet et supportant une information imprimée sur celle-ci, et une surface arrière,
caractérisé en ce que la surface arrière de la découpe (1) porte l'information imprimée sur la paroi supérieure de couvercle (12) et étant visible sur le couvercle (2) qui est déplacé dans une position ouverte, ledit paquet comprenant des rabats latéraux de paroi supérieure de couvercle (21) à l'intérieur du couvercle (2) recouvrant ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5) et ayant une surface combinée représentant au maximum entre environ 2 % et environ 55 % de la surface de ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5).

2. Paquet à couvercle rabattable selon la revendication 1, dans lequel les rabats latéraux de paroi supérieure de couvercle (21) à l'intérieur du couvercle (2) recouvrent ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5) et ont une surface combinée représentant entre environ 10 % et environ 45 % de la surface de ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5).

3. Paquet à couvercle rabattable selon la revendication 1, dans lequel les rabats latéraux de paroi supérieure de couvercle (21) à l'intérieur du couvercle (2) recouvrent ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5) et ont une surface combinée représentant entre 11 % et 40 % de la surface de ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5).

4. Paquet à couvercle rabattable selon la revendication 1, dans lequel les rabats latéraux de paroi supérieure de couvercle (21) à l'intérieur du couvercle (2) recouvrent ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5) et ont une surface combinée représentant au maximum 30 % de la surface de ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5).

5. Paquet à couvercle rabattable selon la revendication 1, 2, 3 ou 4, dans lequel la surface arrière de ladite découpe (1) porte uniquement l'information (T) imprimée sur la paroi supérieure de couvercle (12) et étant visible sur le couvercle (2) qui est déplacé dans une position ouverte.

6. Paquet à couvercle rabattable selon l'une des revendications 1 à 5, ladite information imprimée comprenant du texte (T) à l'attention du consommateur.

7. Paquet à couvercle rabattable selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, ledit paquet comprenant une paroi arrière de couvercle (13b) avec des rabats latéraux (19), lesdits rabats latéraux de paroi supérieure de couvercle (21) dépendant desdits rabats latéraux (19).

8. Paquet à couvercle rabattable selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, ledit paquet comprenant un châssis interne (1') agencé afin de protéger lesdits articles à fumer.

9. Découpe (1) de pliage pour former un paquet de cigarettes ou d'articles à fumer à couvercle rabattable, ledit paquet ayant une base et un couvercle (2), ladite découpe (1) définissant une paroi avant de base (4), une paroi arrière de base (13a), une paroi inférieure de base (10) et des parois latérales de base (15), et un couvercle (2) avec une paroi avant de couvercle (5), une paroi supérieure de couvercle (12), et des parois latérales de couvercle (6, 19), ladite découpe (1) ayant une surface avant définissant la face externe dudit paquet et portant une information imprimée sur celle-ci, et une surface arrière,
caractérisée en ce que la surface arrière de la découpe (1) porte l'information imprimée sur la paroi supérieure de couvercle (12) et étant visible sur le couvercle (2) qui est déplacé dans une position ouverte, ladite découpe (1) comprenant des rabats latéraux de paroi supérieure de couvercle (21) qui, dans la configuration pliée, sont positionnés à l'intérieur du couvercle (2) recouvrant ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5) et ayant une surface combinée représentant au maximum entre environ 2 % et environ 55 % de la surface de ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5).

10. Paquet à couvercle rabattable selon la revendication 9, dans lequel lesdits rabats latéraux de paroi supérieure de couvercle (21) à l'intérieur du couvercle (2) recouvrent ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5) et ayant une surface combinée représentant entre environ 10 % et environ 45 % de la surface de ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5).

11. Paquet à couvercle rabattable selon la revendication 9, dans lequel les rabats latéraux de paroi supérieure de couvercle (21) à l'intérieur du couvercle (2) recouvrent ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5) et ayant une surface combinée représentant entre 11 % et 40 % de la surface de ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5).

12. Paquet à couvercle rabattable selon la revendication 9, dans lequel les rabats latéraux de paroi supérieure de couvercle (21) à l'intérieur du couvercle (2) recouvrent ladite paroi supérieure du couvercle (5) et ayant une surface combinée représentant au maximum 30 % de la surface de ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (5).

13. Découpe selon la revendication 9, 10, 11 ou 12, dans laquelle la surface arrière de la découpe (1) porte uniquement l'information imprimée sur la paroi supérieure de couvercle (12).

14. Découpe selon la revendication 13, lesdits rabats latéraux de paroi supérieure de couvercle (21) ayant une largeur réduite en direction, à partir de ladite paroi supérieure de couvercle (12).

15. Découpe selon la revendication 14, lesdits rabats latéraux supérieurs de couvercle (21) ayant chacun une extrémité (23) positionnée de manière adjacente à une paroi latérale de couvercle (6), ladite extrémité (23) étant de préférence arrondie.

16. Découpe selon l'une quelconque des revendications 9 à 15 précédentes, ladite information imprimée comprenant du texte (T) à l'attention du consommateur.

17. Découpe selon l'une quelconque des revendications 9 à 16 précédentes, ledit paquet comprenant une paroi arrière de couvercle (13b) avec des rabats latéraux (19), lesdits rabats latéraux supérieurs de couvercle (21) dépendant desdits rabats latéraux (19).
