(57) A controller for an elevator equipped with a gear-type traction machine which transmits the driving force of a motor to a driving sheave via a gear, which is constituted by a car which ascends and descends in an elevator shaft, car load detecting means which detects a load acting on the car, operation direction detecting means which detects an operation direction of the car, and speed determining means which determines a maximum speed of the car according to characteristics of the motor during a power running operation and a maximum speed of the car according to characteristics of the gear of the gear-type traction machine during a braking operation on the basis of detection results of the car load detecting means and the operation direction detecting means.
