(54) ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC VARIABLE VALVE ACTUATOR AND METHOD TO CONTROL VALVES OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES

(57) The invention concerns an electro-hydraulic system for the actuation of the valves of the type comprising a cylinder-piston assembly (11-12) for each valve (13) and means for actuating said piston (12) into opening in opposition to spring means (13) recalling the engine valve (13) into its closed position; the actuation chamber (11) is in communication, on one side, with a high-pressure pipe (14), through a first semi-automatic electrovalve (16), which opens automatically when the pressure in the pipe between said valve and the actuation chamber (11) lies above the nominal pressure in the high-pressure pipe (14) and, on the other side, with a low-pressure tank (15) through a second semi-automatic electrovalve (17), which opens automatically when the pressure in the pipe between said valve and the actuation chamber (11) lies below the nominal pressure in the low-pressure tank (15).
