(54) Side surface espagnolette lock for locking a door or a window, and an assembly comprising such an espagnolette lock

(57) The invention relates to a side surface espagnolette (1) for locking a door or window, the side surface espagnolette comprising a pivotable hook bolt (5). The invention also relates to an assembly of a screening element (16), in particular a window or door, and a side surface espagnolette according to the invention accommodated at least partially in the screening element for the purpose of locking said door or said window.

Description

[0001] The invention relates to a side surface espagnolette for locking a door or window. The invention also relates to an assembly of a screening element, in particular a window or door, and a side surface espagnolette according to the invention accommodated at least partially in the screening element.

[0002] Side surface espagnolettes for locking doors or windows for opening are already known. A side surface espagnolette is adapted to be arranged in a closing side of a door or a window, wherein the side surface espagnolette is adapted for co-action with a closing side of a frame enclosing the door or the window. The known side surface espagnolette generally comprises a front plate on which one or more lock housings are mounted. Each lock housing is herein provided with a hook bolt connected pivotally to the lock housing. The hook bolt is herein coupled via a displaceable drive rod to a handle-like body, this handle-like body being received in a lock case connected to the front plate. By means of the handle-like body the orientation of the at least one hook bolt can be displaced between a locking position and an unlocking position. In this manner a door or a window on which the side surface espagnolette is mounted can be respectively locked and unlocked. Although a reliable locking and unlocking of doors and windows can generally be realized using the known side surface espagnolette, the known side surface espagnolette also has a number of drawbacks. A significant drawback of the known side surface espagnolette is that it can only be arranged in awkward and difficult manner in the closing side of a door or window, the more so as in order to be able to arrange a side surface espagnolette in a closing side of a door or window a plurality of separate, relatively deep (up to about 28 mm deep) receiving spaces first have to be cut in this closing side to enable accommodation of the fittings of the known side surface espagnolette, and in particular the lock housings and the lock case of the side surface espagnolette which protrude considerably relative to the front plate. In order to realize these relatively deep receiving spaces, usually also referred to as recesses, specific and relatively expensive tools are generally required, which generally also makes mounting of the known side surface espagnolette relatively costly. In addition, arranging of the separate receiving spaces generally represents a relatively time-consuming process, which usually further increases the cost of mounting the side surface espagnolette.

[0003] The invention has for its object to provide an improved side surface espagnolette which can be arranged in a closing side of a window or door in relatively simple and inexpensive manner.

[0004] The invention provides for this purpose a side surface espagnolette of the type stated in the preamble, comprising: a support structure, at least one hook bolt connected pivotally to the support structure, wherein the hook bolt is displaceable between a retracted unlocking position and an extended locking position, and at least one drive rod connected to the hook bolt for changing the position of the hook bolt, this drive rod being connected displaceably to the support structure, wherein the depth of the side surface espagnolette amounts to a maximum of 15 mm in the case the hook bolt is oriented in the retracted position. By reducing the (maximum) depth of the side surface espagnolette from about 28 mm to a maximum of 15 mm the side surface espagnolette according to the invention can be arranged in a closing side of a door or window in considerably simplified manner, the more so as the receiving space for the side surface espagnolette to be arranged in the closing side requires only a limited depth, whereby the receiving space can be formed by an elongate groove which can be arranged relatively simply in the closing side. This groove can be arranged in the closing side in a single process step using relatively inexpensive, conventional cutting equipment in a manner which takes up relatively little time and with negligible weakening of the relevant door or the relevant window. The arranging of an elongate, about 28 mm deep receiving space in the closing side of a door or window for accommodating the conventional side surface espagnolette is not possible in a single process step, and moreover reduces the strength of the door or the window to an undesirable extent at the position of the closing side. Fitting of the side surface espagnolette in a door or window can thus be significantly facilitated by reducing the depth of the side surface espagnolette according to the invention. In order to improve the process of fitting the side surface espagnolette still further, the depth of the side surface espagnolette, in the case the hook bolt is oriented in the retracted position, preferably amounts to a maximum of substantially 12 mm. Reducing the depth of the side surface espagnolettes to a maximum of 15 mm, and more preferably to a maximum of substantially 12 mm, will generally also result in a modification of the design of a plurality of components of the side surface espagnolette, the more so as determined components of side surface espagnolettes generally have to have a standardized dimensioning. An example hereof is formed by the hook bolt, a free outer end of which must for instance have a minimal dimensioning.

[0005] In a preferred embodiment the support structure comprises at least one lock housing, this lock housing being at least adapted to receive at least a part of the hook bolt in the retracted, unlocking position. The hook bolt can be coupled to the support structure in relatively stable and reliable manner by means of the lock housing. In order to further improve the stability of this coupling, the lock housing preferably has a substantially U-shaped cross-section. A U-shaped cross-section imparts relatively great strength to the lock housing. It is however also possible to envisage the lock housing taking an opened form on two sides, i.e. on a front side directed toward the support structure as well as on a rear side remote from the support structure, whereby the depth of the lock housing can be reduced further, which can enhance the process of fitting the side surface espagnolette according to the invention. The hook bolt is more preferably connected to the lock housing by means of a support shaft. The support shaft can herein be connected displaceably to the lock housing, for instance via a predefined path formed by a slotted hole. It is however also possible to envisage the support shaft being accommodated for two-dimensional (instead of one-dimensional) displacement in a relatively amply dimensioned slotted hole arranged in the lock housing. In an alternative preferred embodiment the lock housing is formed at least partially by the drive rod, wherein the drive rod is adapted to at least partially enclose the hook bolt in the retracted position. In this manner the structure of the side surface espagnolette according to the invention can be kept relatively simple, this usually being advantageous in general from a financial and logistical viewpoint.

[0006] In order to find a balance between limiting the depth of the side surface espagnolette on the one hand and retaining sufficient strength and a minimal dimensioning of determined components of the side surface espagnolette on the other, it will generally be advantageous to modify the (conventional) design of the hook bolt. The hook bolt preferably comprises for this purpose an elongate neck and a hook-like member connected to the neck. The hook bolt is therefore not a block-like bolt and is adapted to co-act in hooking manner with a closing cavity. At least two opposite sides of the elongate neck preferably enclose a mutual angle of at least 25°. Said opposite sides more preferably enclose a mutual angle of substantially 30°.

[0007] Owing to the relative tapering of the neck of the hook bolt of the side surface espagnolette according to the invention the dimensioning of the hook bolt can be selectively reduced, which can significantly reduce the depth defined by the hook bolt in the retracted position, and therewith the depth of the side surface espagnolette as such. The consequence of having the neck taper more toward the hook-like member is that the hook bolt is pivotable through an angle of between 105° and 135°, and in a particular preferred embodiment is pivotable through an angle of substantially 120°. It is however possible to envisage the relatively large pivot angle (compared to a conventional pivot angle of 90°) also being realized in ways other than by considerable tapering of the neck. The effective depth of the hook bolt in the retracted position can also be limited in other ways without making use here of (considerably) tapering opposite sides of the neck.

[0008] The side surface espagnolette according to the invention can form a one-point closure by applying only a single hook bolt, although the side surface espagnolette preferably comprises a plurality of locking hooks connected pivotally to the support structure. In this manner a multi-point closure, and thereby an improved locking, can be realized of a door or window to a frame enclosing the door or the window. The bolt hooks will generally be positioned at a distance from each other so as to enable improvement of the reliability of the locking of the side surface espagnolette.

[0009] In order to displace the drive rod so as to be able in this way to change the position of the hook bolt, the at least one drive rod is preferably connected to a handle. The handle will herein preferably be enclosed by a lock case of limited depth. The lock case can optionally be provided with a lock which can only be operated using an appropriate key. Although the handle and a lock case enclosing the handle preferably also have only a limited depth of a maximum of 15 mm, and more preferably a maximum of 12 mm, the depth of the lock case of the handle will however in practice generally be greater than 15 mm, whereby in addition to an elongate groove a handle hole must usually also be arranged in a door or window to which the side surface espagnolette has to be fitted in order to enable mounting of the side surface espagnolette. However, the arranging of both the groove and the handle hole can still be realized in a manner taking up relatively little time and in relatively simple manner, whereby this preferred embodiment of the invention is also particularly advantageous compared to conventional side surface espagnolettes.

[0010] The support structure preferably comprises at least one edge element, usually also referred to as front plate. The elongate and generally relatively flat edge element has little volume but can generally function extremely well as (part of the) support structure to which and on which the other components of the side surface espagnolette are fixed. The edge element herein also functions as protective element for components of the side surface espagnolette lying behind it after fixing of the side surface espagnolette to a door or window.

[0011] The invention also relates to an assembly of a screening element, in particular a window or door, and a side surface espagnolette according to the invention accommodated at least partially in the screening element. Advantages of the side surface espagnolette according to the invention with a limited depth of a maximum of 15 mm have already been described at length in the foregoing. The side surface espagnolette is preferably arranged in the assembly in a receiving space arranged in the screening element, this receiving space being a maximum of (substantially) 15 mm and in particular a maximum of 12 mm deep. The receiving space is preferably formed by an elongate groove, and more preferably by an elongate groove of substantially uniform depth. The receiving space will generally have to have slightly more ample dimensions than the dimensions of the side surface espagnolette to be accommodated therein in order to facilitate fitting of the assembly. Furthermore, the receiving space will usually be finished by for instance applying a coating, in particular a paint layer, and this will slightly reduce the dimensions of the receiving space. When a side surface espagnolette with a depth of 15 mm is applied a receiving space will therefore be desirable which is slightly but minimally deeper than 15 mm, such as for instance 15.1 mm.

[0012] The invention will be elucidated on the basis ofnon-limitative exemplary embodiments shown in the following figures. Herein:

figure 1a is a perspective view of a side surface espagnolette according to the invention in an extended locking position,

figure 1b is a perspective view of the side surface espagnolette according to figure 1a in a retracted, unlocking position,

figure 1c is an exploded perspective view of the side surface espagnolette according to figures 1a and 1b.

[0013] Figure 1a shows a perspective view of a side surface espagnolette 1 according to the invention in an extended locking position. Side surface espagnolette 1 comprises a front plate 2 and a drive rod 3 connected displaceably to front plate 2. Front plate 2 is provided with a passage opening 4 for a pivotable hook bolt 5. Hook bolt 5 is pivotally connected to a coupling element 6, this coupling element 6 being provided with four coupling pins 7. Coupling pins 7 are adapted for co-action with receiving spaces 8 arranged in front plate 2 for the purpose of attaching coupling element 6 to front plate 2. Hook bolt 5 is provided with two protrusions 9, wherein each protrusion 9 is received in an amply dimensioned slotted hole 10 arranged in drive rod 3. Drive rod 3 is fixed to front plate 2 by means of two rivets 11 such that the relative orientation between drive rod 3 and front plate 2 can be changed. More particularly, drive rod 3 is displaceable (parallel to and) along front plate 2, whereby protrusions 9 of hook bolt 5, and thereby hook bolt 5, can be co-displaced with drive rod 3, which results in a pivoting of hook bolt 5 relative to coupling element 6 and front plate 2. In the shown locking position of side surface espagnolette 1 the drive rod 3 is oriented in an upper position, whereby hook bolt 5 is pivoted through a maximum rotation angle V of 120°. Such a relatively large angle of rotation is possible because hook bolt 5 is constructed in particular manner. Hook bolt 5 particularly comprises a tapering neck 12, the outer end of which is provided with a hook-like member 13. Two opposite, mutually tapering sides 14a, 14b herein enclose a mutual angle ∃ of 30°, which allows the relatively large pivoting angle of hook bolt 5. However, a significant advantage of the shown construction of hook bolt 5 is that hook bolt 5 is relatively compact in a retracted position (see figure 1b), whereby the depth D of side surface espagnolette 1 can remain limited to 12 mm. Such a limited dimensioning has various significant advantages in the fitting process for side surface espagnolette 1, as already described at length in the foregoing. The reduction in the dimensioning of hook bolt 5 is however linked to various set standard conditions for the dimensioning of hook bolt 5; the length L of the protruding part of hook-like member 13 is thus for instance standardized to a length of 11.2 mm. It is noted that the shown side surface espagnolette 1 comprises only one hook bolt 5, and therefore forms a one-point closure. It is also possible in an alternative embodiment to envisage side surface espagnolette 1 having a plurality of hook bolts 5, thereby forming a multi-point closure. Side surface espagnolette 1 is adapted to be substantially received in a groove 17 arranged in a closing side 15 of a door or window 16 (shown in broken lines) and having a (uniform) depth of substantially 12 mm. Groove 17 can be arranged relatively quickly and simply in the door or window 16 by means of a single milling step.

[0014] Figure 1b shows a perspective view of side surface espagnolette 1 according to figure 1a in a retracted unlocking position. The retracted unlocking position is reached by sliding drive rod 3 along front plate 2 in a downward direction. During this sliding the protrusions 9 of hook bolt 5 will be carried along by drive rod 3, whereby hook bolt 5 will be pivoted in upward direction. Because in the shown situation drive rod 3 is situated in a lower position, hook bolt 5 is wholly retracted. In the shown fully retracted position it will not therefore be possible for locking to take place between side surface espagnolette 1, and in particular hook bolt 5, and a closing cavity arranged in a frame, since in the shown situation hook bolt 5 is substantially fully enclosed by drive rod 3 and (possibly) a part of front plate 2. Although a rear side 18 of drive rod 3 remote from front plate 2 takes a non-closed form, the specially designed hook bolt 5 will not protrude relative to this rear side in the shown situation, whereby the depth D of the side surface espagnolette can remain limited to a depth of less than 15 mm, and preferably a depth of substantially 12 mm. Drive rod 3 will generally be connected to an operating handle (not shown) to enable facilitated operation of drive rod 3, and thereby hook bolt 5, by a user. What is exceptional about hook bolt 5 is that the dimensioning and design of hook bolt 5 determine the maximum overall depth of side surface espagnolette 1 of 15 mm. Since hook bolt 5 must nevertheless comply with specific conditions to allow effective application in determined (standard) situations, hook bolt 5 cannot simply be given a smaller form. The reach H of hook bolt 5 must for instance thus amount preferably to at least 8 mm, and more preferably substantially 10.5 mm, and in a particular preferred embodiment to substantially 13 mm in order to enable hook bolt 5 to engage in a closing cavity intended for the purpose. Hook bolt 5 will moreover have to be formed such that the short distance d between a first tangent t1 on the rear side and a second tangent t2 on the hook-like member 13, wherein the first tangent t1 and the second tangent t2 are oriented parallel to each other, amounts to a maximum of 15 mm.

[0015] This is because the shortest (perpendicular) distance d between these tangents, in the case the tangents t1, t2 lie a maximum mutual distance apart, determines the overall depth of side surface espagnolette 1. In the retracted position of side surface espagnolette 1 (see figure 1b) the first tangent t1 preferably lies in the (virtual) rear plane of drive rod 3 in order to enable hook bolt 5 to be received as efficiently as possible in a space enclosed by drive rod 3, wherein the thickness d of hook bolt 5 is preferably smaller than or equal to the total thickness D of drive rod 3 and front plate 2 (d ≤ D). The second tangent t2 will hereby lie in or behind the front plane of front plate 2 so as to prevent hook bolt 5 protruding relative to the assembly of drive rod 3 and front plate 2.

[0016] Figure 1c shows an exploded perspective view of side surface espagnolette 1 according to figures 1a and 1b. This figure shows clearly that side surface espagnolette 1 is constructed relatively simply and with a limited number of components. Drive rod 3 here comprises two side panels 19 held at a mutual distance by two spacers 20. Each spacer 20 is herein provided with a slotted hole 21 through which rivet 11 can be guided for mutual connection of drive rod 3 and front plate 2, this such however that drive rod 3 can slide relative to front plate 2. Figure 1c shows clearly that coupling element 6 fits closely round a rotation shaft 22 forming part of hook bolt 5 without herein impeding a smooth pivoting of hook bolt 5 relative to coupling element 6. It is noted that drive rod 3 can be designed in various ways without detracting from the functionality of side surface espagnolette 1 according to the invention.

[0017] It will be apparent that the invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiments shown and described here, but that numerous variants which will be self evident to the skilled person in this field are possible within the scope of appended claims.
