[0001] The present invention relates to a fitting assembly for pivotal connection of a sash
component with respect to a main frame component of an openable window structure,
comprising elongate first and second fitting members for connection with opposed side
members of the main frame and sash components, respectively, said second fitting member
being pivotally connected at a first end with a slide member fitted in said first
member for sliding motion through part of the length of the first fitting member from
a first end thereof, and a stay member having a first end pivotally connected with
the first fitting member adjacent a second end thereof and a second end pivotally
connected with the second fitting member at a distance from the second end thereof
to allow pivotal movement of the sash component between a closed position of the sash
component, in which the first and second fitting members and the stay member extend
in overlying substantially parallel relationship and any position within a range of
opening positions defined by the pivotal connections of the fitting and stay members.
[0002] Fitting assemblies of this kind are commonly used for assembling the sash and main
frame components of top-hung openable window structures.
[0003] In such assembling operations, by which the first and second fitting members are
connected with opposed side member of the sash and main components at one vertical
side thereof, difficulties are occasionally encountered in obtaining a desired accurate
positioning of the sash component within the opening provided by the main frame component
due to tolerances in the production of the window components and/or distortions imparted
to the main frame component during its installation in a window opening in a building
wall. By distortion of the positioning of the sash component the side, top and bottom
members thereof may become out of alignment with the opposed side, bottom and top
members of the main frame component and, at worst, it may become impossible to fit
the sash component correctly within the main frame component.
[0004] It is the object of the invention to provide a simple and user friendly adjusting
mechanism to eliminate this problem.
[0005] According to the invention this object is accomplished by a fitting assembly of the
kind defined, which is characterized in that adjusting means is provided at the second
end of the first fitting member for adjustment of the position of the pivotal connection
of the first end of the stay member with the first fitting member.
[0006] Thereby, an out of alignment distortion between the sash compent and the main frame
component may in most cases be easily remedied by adjustment of the adjustment means
of the fitting assembly at one and/or the other vertical side of the sash and main
frame components. By this adjustment the position of the pivotal connection of the
first end of the stay member with the first fitting member may be sufficiently adjusted
to restore a correctly aligned mounting of the sash component with respect to the
main frame component.
[0007] Advantageous and preferred additional features of the fitting assembly are stated
in the dependent claims.
[0008] Thus, in a preferred embodiment the adjusting means may comprise a first adjusting
member adjustably fitted in the first fitting member adjacent the second end thereof
and pivotally connected with the first end of the stay member, and a second adjusting
member fixed with the second end of the first fitting member, the second adjusting
member being providing with adjustable contact means adapted for contact by an end
contact part provided by the first adjusting member.
[0009] Preferably, the end contact part may be provided by a first end section of the first
adjusting member, which includes the pivotal connection of the first adjusting member
with the first end of the stay member, the first adjusting member comprising a second
end section offset from said first end section and providing means for securing the
first adjusting member with respect to the first fitting member.
[0010] In a preferred embodiment the second adjusting member may comprise a brick-like member
providing a blind receptacle with an entrance opening in one end face of the brick-like
member for receiving the end contact part of the first adjusting member, said contact
means being provided by an adjustable contact member at the bottom of said receptacle.
[0011] Preferably, the contact means is provided by an adjusting screw screwed into the
blind receptacle from an end face of the brick-like member opposite to said one end
face.
[0012] In the following, an embodiment of the fitting assembly according to the invention
will be explained in greater detail with reference to the schematic drawings, in which
Fig. 1 is an exploded view of the fitting assembly;
Fig. 2 shows a section of the fitting assembly as illustrated in fig. 1 at a larger
scale; and
Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views corresponding to figs. 1 and 2, respectively,
of the fitting assembly in its assembled condition.
[0013] As shown in the drawing the adjustable fitting assembly according to the invention
comprises a first fitting member 1 for connection the inner side of a vertical side
member of the main frame component of a top-hung window structure and a second fitting
member 2, which is adapted for connection with the sash component of the window.
[0014] At a first end, the second fitting member 2 is provided with a pivot member 3 for
pivotal connection with a slide member 4 fitted in the first fitting member 1 at a
first end thereof for sliding motion through a part of the length of the first fitting
member 1.
[0015] Between the first and second fitting members 1 and 2 a stay member 5 is provided,
which is pivotally connected at a first end by pivot means 6 with adjusting means
generally designated by 7, which is provided at the second end of the first fitting
member 1 and will be further explained in the following.
[0016] At its second end the stay member 5 is provided with pivot means 8 for pivotal connection
with the second fitting member 2 at a distance from a second end thereof.
[0017] As more clearly illustrated in fig. 2, the adjusting means 7 comprises a first adjusting
member 9, which is adjustably fitted in the first fitting member 1 adjacent the second
end thereof and is provided with the pivot member 6, with which the first end of the
stay member 5 is pivotally connected, and a second adjusting member 10, which is fixed
with the second end of the first fitting member 1 and provides adjustable contact
means adapted for contact by an end contact part 11 of the first adjusting member
9.
[0018] The end contact part 11 is formed by a first end section 9a of the first adjusting
member 9, which includes the pivot member 6 for pivotal connection of the first adjusting
member 9 with the first end of the stay member 5. The first adjusting member 9 comprises
also a second end section 9b, which is offset from the first end section 9a by a shoulder
portion 9c, and by means of which the first adjusting member 9 may be firmly secured
with respect to the first fitting member 1, once the first adjusting member 9 has
been adjusted into a correct position with respect to the first fitting member 1.
[0019] Adjustment of the first adjusting member 9 into a desired adjusted position of the
pivot means 6 is accomplished by means of the second adjusting member 10, which comprises
a brick-like member 12 providing a blind receptacle with an entrance opening in one
end face 13 of the brick-like member for receiving the end contact part 11 of the
first adjusting member 9.
[0020] At the bottom of the blind receptacle in the second adjusting member 10 contact means
for the end contact part 11 of the first adjusting member 9 is provided by an adjustable
contact member, preferably in the form of an adjusting screw 14 screwed into the blind
receptacle from the opposite end face 15 of the brick-like member 12.
[0021] In the illustrated embodiment the fitting assembly according to the invention is
designed mainly for use with window structures having main frame and sash components
made up of wood profiles and the first and second fitting members 1 and 2 and the
first and second adjusting members 9 and 11 is provided with holes for conventional
screw connections. Specifically, to accomplish a desired range for adjustment of the
position of the pivot member 6 with respect to the first fitting member 1 an elongate
screw hole 16 is formed in the second offset end section 9b of the first adjusting
member 9.
[0022] By offsetting the first end section 9a of the first adjusting member 9 from the second
end section by means of the shoulder portion 9c the pivotal mo-vability of the stay
member 5 with respect to the first fitting member 1 by the pivot member 6 is secured.
[0023] In use of the fitting assembly the second fitting member 2 is first connected with
a vertical side member of the sash component of the window structure, which at this
stage is separated from the main frame component. To secure correct positioning at
the end of the sash side member joined with the top member of the sash component the
second fitting member 2 may be formed with a projecting angular arm 17, which may
be connected with the sash top member close to its corner junction with the side member.
[0024] The first fitting member 1 may now be connected with the vertical side member of
the main frame component intended to be opposed to the sash side member, with which
the second fitting member 2 is connected, the first fitting member 1 being positioned
at the main frame side member to have its upper end 18 placed in contact with the
top member of the main frame component.
[0025] If a distortion or misalignment of the sash component with respect to the main frame
component is observed, correction may be accomplished by the adjusting mechanism provided
by the invention, by which the position of the pivot member 6, by which the stay member
5 is pivotally connected via the first adjusting member 9 with the first fitting member
1, is adjusted. The adjustment is made by means of the adjusting screw 14 acting on
the end contact part 11 of the first adjusting member 9, whereby the position of the
first adjusting member 9 may be displaced within the range provided by the elongate
screw hole 16, through which the thus adjusted position of the first adjusting member
9 with respect to the first fitting member 1 may be secured. Typically the displacement
range thus provided for adjustment will be a few millimetres.
