(57) A washing machine includes a drum (3) arranged to contain a laundry and to rotate, a motor (7) rotating the drum (3), a rotation speed detector (14) detecting a rotation speed of the motor (7), and a controller (31) controlling the motor (7) according to the rotation speed detected by the rotation speed detector (14), the controller (31) detecting an amount of the laundry. The controller (31) is operable to detect a first acceleration of the drum (3) while allowing the motor (7) to generate a predetermined accelerating torque to raise the rotation speed of the drum (3) from a first predetermined rotation speed to a second predetermined rotation speed. The controller (31) is operable to detect a second acceleration of the drum (3) while allowing the motor (7) to generate a predetermined decelerating torque to decrease the rotation speed of the drum (3) from a third predetermined third rotation speed to a fourth predetermined rotation speed. The controller (31) is operable to detect the amount of the laundry according to the first angular acceleration and the second angular acceleration. In the washing machine, the controller (31) can detect the amount of the laundry accurately.
