[0001] This invention relates to a wardrobe sliding door arrangement, and in particular
to a sliding rail with a locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door
from said sliding rail with automatic engagement and disengagement from the respective
rail.
[0002] More in particular, this invention relates to a guide as defined above wherein the
locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail
is easily insertable and removable from the sliding rail seat without the need of
using any tools at all, and moreover is constantly kept into the most suitable position
into said rail seat irrespective of the height adjustment of the wardrobe door.
[0003] Furniture provided with sliding doors is nowadays much widespread and appreciated,
as it allows eliminating the obstructions due to the projection of the doors themselves
in the opening step. Also from the aesthetic point of view, furniture with sliding
doors has an appreciable advantage due to the lack of hinges that could remain at
least partly visible and alter the linearity of the furniture itself.
[0004] Specific devices are generally used to obtain the sliding of furniture doors, which
consist in small carriages comprising wheels, sliding blocks, bearings or the like;
the carriages are constrained to the doors at the top edge of the same and through
said rotatable members, they slide along rails or seats formed into suitably shaped
metal section bars. The section bars are secured to the carrying frame of the furniture,
in the proximity of the front side of the same both at the top and at the bottom,
and in general they comprise two paired sliding seats for as many doors or groups
of doors, internal and external. In the assembly step, the single doors provided with
carriage are first hooked to the top rail whereto they remain hung but with the possibility
of oscillating; immediately afterwards, the device located in the bottom side of the
door is brought to insert into the corresponding seat, suitably moving the door itself.
[0005] The coupling of the internal and external doors with the arrangement of the respective
carriages along the seats of the metal section bars arranged at the top is not particularly
difficult; on the contrary, the subsequent attachment of a locking member for preventing
the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail is very difficult due to the
position of the carriages themselves close to the ceiling, it does not allow visual
checks to the operator and often causes an imprecise operation. In these conditions,
handling the tools required for locking the locking member for preventing the disengagement
of said door from said sliding rail is further difficult. If the latter is not properly
arranged onto the carriage, the risk that the door may detach from the piece of furniture
and get damaged is real; considering that the doors often have a considerable weight,
the accidental disengagement thereof may cause serious harm to people. The locking
member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail is difficult
to apply to the carriage in the door assembly step and sometimes it is even more difficult
to remove in the event of removal of the door itself.
[0006] Moreover, the non-secondary drawback related to the fact that the locking member
for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail is secured to
the door carriage and that the latter often requires height adjustments, should be
taken into account. To this end the carriage, which is provided with adjustment slots
in relation to the door, is operated but in many cases altering the correct position
of the locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding
rail.
[0007] An upward or downward movement of the carriage necessarily involves also the locking
member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail, whose
effects could thus be nullified, putting the door stability at a risk.
[0008] The object of this invention is to obviate the drawbacks mentioned hereinabove.
[0009] More in particular, the object of this invention is to provide a wardrobe sliding
door arrangement wherein the top carriage of the doors themselves, integrating the
locking member(s) for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding
rail, is engageable or disengageable in a substantially automatic manner, without
the aid of tools, from the respective sliding rail.
[0010] Further and not secondary object of the invention is to provide a wardrobe sliding
door arrangement as defined above wherein the position of the locking member(s) for
preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail is not influenced
by the movement in vertical direction of the top carriage of the door, carried out
for adjusting the height of the door itself.
[0011] Last but not least, an object of the invention is to provide a wardrobe sliding door
arrangement wherein the locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door
from said sliding rail associated to the top carriage of the doors is automatically
positioned, and without the need of tools, into the seat created in the section bar
secured to the bearing frame.
[0012] A further object of the invention is to provide the users with a wardrobe sliding
door arrangement suitable for ensuring high level of resistance and reliability over
time, also such as to be easily and inexpensively constructed.
[0013] These and yet other objects are achieved by a wardrobe sliding door arrangement according
to claim 1. Further advantageous features of the invention are described in the dependent
claims.
[0014] The construction and functional features of the wardrobe sliding door arrangement
of this invention shall be better understood from the following detailed description,
wherein reference is made to the annexed drawings showing some preferred and non-limiting
embodiments thereof, and wherein:
figure 1 shows a schematic perspective view of the carriage of the wardrobe sliding
door arrangement of this invention;
figure 2 shows a schematic exploded view of the same carriage of the wardrobe sliding
door arrangement;
figure 3 shows a schematic front partly cutaway view of the top carriage of an internal

according to a first configuration;

[0015] With reference first to figures 1, 2 and 3, a wardrobe sliding door arrangement according
to this invention comprises a carriage, globally indicated with 10 at figure 1 and
intended for internal and external doors, composed of a shaped frame 12 having a section
substantially as an upturned "U", wherein the opposite and parallel back 14 and front
16 walls have different heights. In particular, the back wall 14 of the frame 12 is
intended to be secured to the wardrobe door (not shown) by conventional screws and
is therefore provided with multiple through holes 18. The distance between said walls
14 and 16 is approximately comprised between 15 and 40 mm and defines, in the central-top
portion of the frame 12, a cavity with rectangular profile and longitudinally extended,
wherein a support 20 is arranged for a rotatable member 22, provided with central
through hole 22', and for a locking member for preventing the disengagement of said
door from said sliding rail 24. The support 20 defines an upturned "U" profile wherein
the opposite and parallel front 26 and back 28 walls have a substantially equal height;
the top connecting wall, indicated with 30, is bent downwards at 90° at least on a
head of the support 20 and forms a tab 32 of smaller height than said walls 26 and
28.
[0016] The bottom free end of the tab 32 is provided with a central recess 34 with vertical
development, extending by about half the height of the tab itself, intended for seating
a part of the stem of a screw which shall be described hereinafter. The opposite and
parallel walls 26 and 28 of support 20 are provided with two parallel through slots
36, 36' of ovoid shape, diagonally orientated and obtained in a position close to
the vertical edges of the same walls. Said slots 36, 36', only visible relative to
the front wall 26 of the support 20, receive respective rivets 38, 38', inserted transversally
into the suitably pierced shaped frame 12 and in the support 20, which is therefore
connected to the same frame 12.
[0017] The support 20 is further provided, along the opposite walls 26 and 28, with a through
hole 40 that receives a rivet 42 suitable for rotatably constraining the rotatable
member 22 into the space comprised between the internal faces of the walls 26 and
28 of the support 20.
[0018] The locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding
rail 24 is also constrained to said support 20, which consists in a shaped plate preferably
made of plastic material provided with an appendix vertically orientated with end
lip 24' protruding outwards, that is, in opposite direction relative to the back wall
14 of the frame 12. The locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door
from said sliding rail 24 is secured by rivets 44 or equivalent means to the front
wall 26 of the support 20 and is intended for cooperating with the metal section bar
that will be described hereinafter.
[0019] The carriage 10 further comprises a block 46, made of plastic or other suitable material,
with substantially parallelepiped shape and provided with a threaded hole for a screw
50; said block and screw are shown in detail in figure 10. The screw 50 is provided
at the front end with a groove 52 suitable for arranging into the recess 34 of the
tab 32 of the support 20, whereas the block 46 is intended for abutting the external
front of the tab itself, aligning the threaded hole 48 with the recess 34. The block
46 is provided with one or more cross through holes 54 for the fixing thereof to the
frame 12 and to the support 20; such fixing is preferably obtained by pins 56 with
shaped head.
[0020] Due to the presence of the through slots 36 and 36' on the support 20, through the
connecting rivets 38, 38', the frame 12 and the support 20 are constrained to each
other with possibility of relative motion between each other; the rotation in clockwise
or counter clockwise direction of the screw 50, in fact, originates such relative
movement since the groove 52 of the screw itself pushes forward or retracts the support
20 relative to the frame 12 and these forward and backward movements take place along
an inclined direction, determined by the orientation of the through slots 36 and 36'.
This advantageously determines the possibility of adjusting the height of the frame
12, thus the door secured thereto, on the other hand without affecting and modifying
the position of the support 20 that carries the rotatable member 22 and the locking
member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail 24.
[0021] As a consequence, the latter remains constantly into the suitable position in relation
to the seat arranged on the section bar comprising the sliding rails.
[0022] Figures 3 to 5 show a first embodiment of said section bar, globally indicated with
58 and provided with opposite vertical walls with top edge 60, 60' with a profile
by way of an example semicircular, complementary to the recess formed along the rolling
surface of the rotatable member 22. The edge 60 is referred to the carriage 12 of
the internal door, whereas the edge 60' is referred to the carriage that will be described
hereinafter, set up for the external door. The section bar 58 defines, between the
opposite vertical walls with top edge 60 and 60', two adjacent seats extended longitudinally
and placed at different heights, separated by an intermediate wall substantially shaped
as an upturned "S" that thanks to two integral horizontal portions, forms as many
undercuts overlapped to each other; the bottom undercut, indicated with 62, is intended
for preventing the accidental lifting above a given height of the locking member for
preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail 24 and is overlapped
to the protruding lip 24' of the device itself.
[0023] The predetermined distance between the lip 24' and the undercut 62 can be advantageously
kept constant irrespective of the height adjustment of the door secured to the frame
12, thanks to the possibility of moving such frame irrespective of the support 20
provided with orientated angularly through slots 36, 36'. Moreover, thanks to the
shape and position of the locking member for preventing the disengagement of said
door from said sliding rail 24, the door coupled to the top portion of the wardrobe
frame is easily stabilised, considering that the lip 24' of said device automatically
arranges below the undercut 62. The operating step that leads to the coupling and
stabilisation of the carriage 12 relative to the internal door is schematised at figures
3 and 4; wherefrom it is seen that by first inclining the door, that is, keeping the
top portion thereof slightly protruding outwards, the rotatable member moves on the
shaped edge 60 of the vertical wall of the section bar and the lip 24' of the locking
member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail 24 is
moved underneath the undercut 62. The subsequent alignment of the door, which is constrained
also at the bottom by any device to the wardrobe frame, makes the carriage 12 straighten
up and moves the lip 24' to a predetermined and minimum distance from the undercut
62, thus preventing the accidental disengagement of the door.
[0024] Figures 6 and 7 refer to a carriage, globally indicated with 15, set up for the external
doors; said carriage comprises several components already illustrated for the solution
at figures 1 and 2 and therefore, such components are indicated with the same reference
numerals used before. The carriage 15 for external doors comprises a shaped frame
17, similar to frame 12 of the previous solution compared to which it has a larger
width, that is, a larger distance between the back wall 14 and the front wall 16;
such distance is approximately comprised between 40 and 90 mm. According to this embodiment,
the support 20 carrying the rotatable member 22 and the locking member for preventing
the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail 24 is secured by the rivets
38, 38' to the internal face of the front wall 16 of the shaped frame 17 and to an
opposite and parallel wall 19, visible at figures 4 and 5, secured by welding or other
suitable means into the frame 17. The wall 19 is arranged between the front 16 and
back 14 walls of the frame 12 and develops in vertical from the internal front of
the flat portion that connects the walls themselves. The rivets 38, 38' cross the
inclined slots 36, 36' made on the front 26 and back 28 wall of the support 20, which
is provided with block 46 with screw 50 as in the previous embodiment. The block 46
is arranged at the opposite tab 32 (thus not visible at figure 6) relative to that
shown at figure 2 and like that, it is provided with a recess 34 cooperating with
the groove 52 of the screw 50. The supports 20 are actually provided with opposite
tabs 32 with recess 34 to be used without distinction starting from one or the other
head according to the assembly needs.
[0025] The locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding
rail 24 is secured, in the solution relating to the carriage 15 for external doors,
to the back wall 28 of the support 20 by rivets 44. As a whole, the frame 17 of the
carriage 15 intended for the external door is sized so as to go beyond the frame 12
of the carriage 10 intended for the internal door, as can be seen in particular at
figure 5; the height of the vertical wall of the section bar 58 provided with top
edge 60' therefore is higher than the parallel wall with top edge 60.
[0026] With this configuration, the carriages 10 and 15 and the respective frames 12 and
17 do not interfere with each other in the assembly step and in operation.
[0027] The locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding
rail 24 with 24' protruding outwards comprises, relative to the carriage 15, a second
and opposite vertical appendix, indicated with 21; the second appendix 21 has a smaller
width than the opposite appendix provided with protruding lip 24' therefore is more
elastic. As a whole, the locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door
from said sliding rail 24 associated to the carriage 15 defines, in front view, a
substantially fork-wise configuration, wherein the end of the second appendix 21 is
slightly protruding in a direction opposite the lip 24' for forming a limited extension
plane and with end chamfer.
[0028] The locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding
rail thus obtained is suitable for arranging in a longitudinally extending seat of
the section bar 58 comprised between the vertical wall with top edge 60' and the intermediate
wall shaped as an upturned "S" that comprises the bottom undercut 62. Said seat of
the device 24 associated to the carriage 15 is indicated with 65 at figure 5, whereas
the seat of the device 24 of the carriage 12 is indicated with 65' at the same figure.
The top free end of said intermediate wall of the section bar 58 is bent at 90° in
the direction of the edge 60' and therefore defines a second undercut, or top undercut
64, forming a barrier for the protruding plane of the appendix 21.
[0029] As with the frame 12, the coupling and stabilisation along the section bar 58 is
easy also for the carriage 15 relating to the external door, by first inclining the
door, then the carriage itself, as in figure 4. The subsequent alignment of the door
makes said carriage straighten up, whereas the locking member for preventing the disengagement
of said door from said sliding rail 24, which with the lip 24' is already into the
set up seat of the section bar 58, moves with the second appendix 21 into the seat
itself; the elasticity of the second appendix 21 and the end chamfer of the protruding
portion thereof allow easy surpassing of the top undercut 64.
[0030] Figures 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13 relate to an alternative embodiment of the carriage for
external doors, set up for using a locking member for preventing the disengagement
of said door from said sliding rail 24 of the type used for the carriage 10 intended
for internal doors, as per figures 1 and 2.
[0031] Also this embodiment comprises several components identical to those already described
and illustrated before, which are therefore indicated with the same reference numerals.
[0032] The carriage illustrated in detail at figures 8 and 9 is globally indicated with
25 and differs from the carriage 15 in that the locking member for preventing the
disengagement of said door from said sliding rail 24 lacks the second appendix 21
and is arranged, on the shaped frame 17, in a more advanced position relative to the
rotatable member 22; the latter is therefore partly covered by the device itself,
similar to the solution at figures 1 and 2. Said device 24 is secured by the rivets
44 to the front wall 26 of the support 20, while the latter, as in the solution of
figures 4 to 7, is arranged and constrained with the rivets 38, 38 that cross the
slots 36, 36' between the front wall 16 and the wall 19 of the shaped frame 17. The
rotatable member 22, coupled to the front 26 and back 28 by the rivet 42 inserted
in the hole 40, is arranged into the same support 20.
[0033] The carriage 25 is associated to a specific section bar 59, illustrated at figures
11, 12 and 13, which can receive also the carriage 10, provided with frame 12 and
intended for the external doors.
[0034] As for section bar 58, the section bar 59 comprises two vertical walls with top edge
60, 60' with semicircular profile, complementary to the recess formed along the rolling
surface of the rotatable member 22.
[0035] The locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding
rail associated to the frames 12 and 17 is in this case identical and corresponds
to the device 24 with protruding lip 24' of the figures 1 and 2, as it lacks the second
appendix 21.
[0036] Such locking members for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding
rail of the frames 12 and 17 are received into respective seats, substantially identical
to one another from the dimensional standpoint, made in the section bar 59 and suitably
spaced from each other.
[0037] Said seats, indicated with 63 and 63', are obtained at different heights and respectively
receive the locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said
sliding rail 24 of the frame 17 and of the frame 12; on the side facing said devices,
the seats 63 and 63' comprise each a bending at 90° that forms as many undercuts,
bottom 66 and top 68, intended for cooperating with the protruding lip 24' of the
devices themselves. Also in this embodiment, the operations for coupling and stabilising
the carriages 10 for internal doors and 25 for external doors along the section bar
59 are easy and are obtained according to the methods already described before.
[0038] Figures 14 and 15 refer to a further embodiment of the wardrobe sliding door arrangement
according to the invention, which in this case envisages only the use of locking member
for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail 24 on a carriage
for internal and external doors, globally indicated with 35. Said carriage comprises
two shaped frames 37, 39, that support both the rotatable member 22 and the locking
member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail; the latter
is indicated with 41 relative to the frame 37 for the external door and with 43 for
the frame 39 intended for the internal door. The frame 37 is similar to the frame
17 described before, compared whereto it has, at the base of the front vertical wall
indicated with 70, opposite and integral end tabs 72, bent at 90° outwards, one of
which carries the locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from
said sliding rail 41 at the bottom. The same wall 70 constitutes the support for the
rotatable member 22. The locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door
from said sliding rail 41 is composed of a body with square or "L" profile wherein
the two planes are orientated substantially at 90° relative to each other and wherein
the end of the vertical plane extends outwards in an integral appendix 41', similar
to lip 24' of the device 24.
[0039] The frame 39, arranged at the back of frame 37, is composed of a plate shaped as
an "L" wherein the horizontal wall 74 faces the vertical wall 70 of the frame 37 and
supports the locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said
sliding rail 43 at an end; said latter, except for the more limited height, is identical
to the device 41 of the frame 37 and like that, it is provided with end appendix protruding
outwards and indicated with 43'. The vertical wall 76 of the frame 39 carries the
rotatable member 22.
[0040] The carriage 35 is associated to a section bar, globally indicated with 78 at figure
15, wherein one of the coupling edges with a rotatable member 22, in particular that
carried by the frame 37, is formed from the folding of the section bar itself; said
edge is indicated with 80 and separates two identical longitudinally extended seats
82, 84, arranged on the same plane, respectively intended for receiving the locking
members for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail 43 and
41. The edge wherealong the rotatable member 22 of the frame 39 slides is indicated
with 80'. The seats 82 and 84 are provided with undercuts 82' and 84' intended for
cooperating with the appendices 43' and 41' of said locking members for preventing
the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail.
[0041] Also according to this embodiment of the wardrobe sliding door arrangement, the coupling
and the stabilisation of the carriages 35 are obtained in a quick and easy manner,
starting from the internal door secured to the frame 39, according to the same methods
described for the previous solutions.
[0042] As can be noticed from the above, the advantages achieved by the invention are clear.
In the wardrobe sliding door arrangement of this invention, all the locking members
for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail are constrained
beforehand to the carriage frames and are easily received into the respective seats
of the section bars, provided with undercuts that prevent the accidental exit thereof.
[0043] Particularly advantageous, with reference to the solutions shown at figures 1 to
13, is the possibility of adjusting the height of the doors without influencing or
modifying the position of the locking members for preventing the disengagement of
said door from said sliding rail constrained to the different carriages.
[0044] Even if the invention has been described hereinbefore with particular reference to
some embodiments thereof made by way of a non-limiting example only, several changes
and variations will appear clear to a man skilled in the art in the light of the above
description.
[0045] This invention therefore is intended to include any changes and variations thereof
falling within the spirit and the scope of protection of the following claims.
1. A wardrobe sliding door arrangement comprising a sliding rail (58, 59, 78) and a rolling
assembly secured to each sliding door, said rolling assembly comprising:
- a carriage (10, 15, 25, 35) comprising a shaped frame (12, 17, 37, 39) carrying
at least one rotatable member (22) for sliding engagement with shaped edges (60, 60',
80, 80') of said sliding rail (58, 59, 78), and
- a locking member (24, 41, 43) for preventing the disengagement of said door from
said sliding rail (58, 59, 78) with means for vertical adjustment of said door,
characterized in that said sliding rail (58, 59, 78) comprises longitudinally extending seats (63, 63',
65, 65', 82, 84) with undercuts (62, 64, 66, 68, 82', 84') cooperating with protruding
lips of said locking member (24, 41, 43).
2. A door arrangement according to claim 1, wherein said shaped frames (12, 17) are coupled
to an upturned "U" support (20) provided, on the opposite vertical walls (26, 28),
with one or more through slots (36, 36') and with a hole (40) for a rivet (42) that
constrains the rotatable member (22) between said walls (26, 28).
3. A door arrangement according to the previous claims, wherein the frame (12) defines
an upturned "U" section with opposite back (14) and front (16) walls of different
heights whereinbetween the support (20) is arranged, secured to the walls themselves
by rivets (38, 38') that cross said through slots (36, 36').
4. A door arrangement according to claims 1 and 2, wherein the frame (17) substantially
defines an upturned "U" section with opposite back (14) and front (16) walls whereinbetween
a further vertical wall (19) is formed, the support 20 being secured between said
walls (16, 19) by rivets (38, 38') that cross the through slots (36, 36') of the support
itself.
5. A door arrangement according to the previous claims, wherein the support (20) is provided,
on at least one head, with a tab (32) bent downwards, which develops starting from
the top wall (30) of connection of the front (26) and back (28) walls, the tab (32)
having a recess (34) vertically orientated and cooperating with the stem of a screw
(50) provided with a groove (52).
6. A door arrangement according to claim 5, wherein the screw (50) crosses the threaded
hole (48) of a block (46), aligned with a head of the support (20) and secured by
pins (56) to the shaped frame (17).
7. A door arrangement according to one or more of the previous claims, wherein the locking
members for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail (24)
comprise a vertically orientated shaped plate, secured by rivets (44) to the support
(20), at the bottom end whereof an integral lip (24') is obtained, protruding in the
direction of the front wall (16) of the shaped frames (12, 17) of the carriages (10,
15).
8. A door arrangement according to claim 7, wherein the locking member for preventing
the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail (24) associated to the shaped
frame (17) of the carriage (15) comprises a vertical appendix (21) opposite the lip
(24'), relative whereto it has a smaller thickness, protruding in opposite direction
relative to the lip itself for forming a limited extension plane with end chamfer.
9. A door arrangement according to claim 1, wherein the carriage (35) comprises two shaped
frames (37, 39), each supporting a rotatable member (22) and a locking member for
preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail (41) or (43) sliding
along the section bar (78).
10. A door arrangement according to claim 9, wherein the shaped frame (37) defines a substantially
upturned "U" section, wherein the front vertical wall (70) extends into two opposite
tabs (72), bent at 90° outwards, to one whereof the locking member for preventing
the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail (41) or (43) is secured, comprised
of an element with substantially "L" shaped profile.
11. A door arrangement according to claims 8 and 9, wherein the shaped frame (39) comprises
a plate bent at 90°, comprised of two integral horizontal (74), that supports the
locking member for preventing the disengagement of said door from said sliding rail
(43), and vertical (76) wall whereto the rotatable member (22) is secured.
12. A door arrangement according to one or more of the previous claims, wherein in the
section bar (78) associated to the carriage (35) one of the sliding edges (80) of
a rotatable member (22) is obtained from the folding of the section bar itself and
separates the seats (82, 84), located on the same plane and provided with said undercuts
(82', 84').
