Ironing board cover and method for installing the ironing board cover on an ironing
board |
(57) An ironing board cover comprising a material layer substantially having the shape
of an ironing board, which has a surface area up to 25% larger than the upper surface
area of the ironing board, which material is resistant to the temperature that develops
during ironing, wherein the material layer is undetachably provided all around with
a sleeve-like holder provided with an opening, through which a stretching element
can be drawn, which stretching element terminates at one end of the material layer
and which is provided with a tightening element at that location for tightening the
stretching element round the ironing board, the material of which material layer is
elastic. The invention further relates to a method for installing an ironing board cover on
an ironing board, wherein the ironing board cover is laid on the ironing board, and
wherein that said ironing board cover is an ironing board cover as indicated above,
and wherein the stretching element is passed through the tightening element and tightened
round the ironing board with a correct fit.

[0001] The invention relates to an ironing board cover comprising a material layer substantially
having the shape of an ironing board, which has a surface area up to 25% larger than
the upper surface area of the ironing board, which material is resistant to the temperature
that develops during ironing. The invention further relates to a method for installing
the ironing board cover on an ironing board.
[0002] Such an ironing board cover is known from Dutch patent No.
102 25 34, likewise in the name of Widemex Geldrop B.V. The object of said known patent is
to provide the cover with one or more materials for reducing the friction between
the fabric to be ironed and the heating device. Comparable ironing board covers are
known from
EP-A-0 378 229 and British patent No.
1,091,110.
[0003] It is an object of the present invention to manufacture an ironing board cover which
can be installed with a correct fit on ironing boards of varying dimensions as they
are currently sold, making it possible to produce and market an ironing board cover
in one size only. This is advantageous from a production point of view and also for
retailers who sell ironing board covers, because they only need to keep a limited
number in stock rather than various sizes of ironing board covers. Furthermore it
is easier for consumers to buy an ironing board cover, since they no longer need to
keep in mind the dimensions of the ironing board that the cover must fit.
[0004] This object is accomplished with an ironing board cover as referred to in the introduction,
which is
characterised in that the material layer is undetachably provided all around with a sleeve-like holder
provided with an opening, through which a stretching element can be drawn, which stretching
element terminates at one end of the material layer and which is provided with a tightening
element at that location for tightening the stretching element round the ironing board,
the material of which material layer is elastic.
[0005] According to the invention, it is furthermore preferable if the stretching element
is a string. According to a special embodiment of the invention, the elastic material
of the material layer is a jersey material. Furthermore it is preferable if the sleeve-like
holder is made of a material other than the material of the material layer, the sleeve-like
holder being made of a material which is mechanically stronger than jersey.
[0006] Another preferred embodiment concerns an ironing board cover which is provided with
a tightening element having a bore through which the string is passed and tied thereto.
[0007] According to the invention, an ironing board cover is thus obtained which comprises
a material layer substantially having the shape of an ironing board, which has a surface
area which is up to 25% larger than the upper surface area of the ironing board, which
material is resistant to the temperature that develops during ironing, which material
layer is undetachably provided all around with a sleeve-like holder provided with
an opening, through which a stretching element can be drawn, which stretching element
terminates at one end of the material layer and which is provided with a tightening
element at that location for tightening the stretching element round the ironing board,
the material of which material layer is elastic.
[0008] The invention will now be explained in more detail in the description below, in which
reference is made to the appended drawing, which shows an ironing board cover according
to the invention.
[0009] The ironing board cover 1 consists of a material layer 2 having the shape of an ironing
board. The cover must be larger than the ironing board itself so as to make it possible
to fit the cover over the ironing board. The cover need not be larger than the ironing
board by more than 25%, because this would only require the use of more material,
which would make the cover more expensive. The ironing board cover 1 comprises a sleeve-like
holder 3, through which a string 4 is passed, which string 4 ends in an end 5 of the
ironing board cover and which can be tightened via the tightening element 6, so that
the ironing board cover can be installed on the ironing board with a correct fit.
To achieve this, the material of the material layer 2 is preferably elastic. It has
been found that a jersey material meets this requirement and, in addition, is resistant
to the temperature that develops during ironing.
[0010] The invention also relates to a method for installing the cover on the ironing board
with a correct fit, wherein the ironing board cover is laid on the ironing board,
said ironing board cover being a cover as described in the foregoing, and wherein
the stretching element 4 is passed through the tightening element 6 and tightened
round the ironing board with a correct fit.
1. An ironing board cover (1) comprising a material layer substantially having the shape
of an ironing board, which has a surface area up to 25% larger than the upper surface
area of the ironing board, which material is resistant to the temperature that develops
during ironing, characterised in that the material layer (2) is undetachably provided all around with a sleeve-like holder
(3) provided with an opening (5), through which a stretching element (4) can be drawn,
which stretching element ends in one end of the material layer (2) and which is provided
with a tightening element (6) at that location for tightening the stretching element
(4) round the ironing board, the material of which material layer is elastic.
2. An ironing board cover according to claim 1, characterised in that said stretching element (4) is a string.
3. An ironing board cover according to claims 1 - 2, characterised in that the elastic material of the material layer (2) is a jersey material.
4. An ironing board cover according to claims 1 - 3, characterised in that the sleeve-like holder (3) is made of a material other than the material of the material
layer (2).
5. An ironing board cover according to claims 1 - 4, characterised in that the sleeve-like holder (3) is made of a material which is mechanically stronger than
jersey.
6. An ironing board cover according to claims 1 - 5, characterised in that the tightening element (6) is provided with a bore through which the string is passed
and tied thereto.
7. An ironing board cover (1) comprising a material layer substantially having the shape
of an ironing board, which has a surface area which is up to 25% larger than the upper
surface area of the ironing board, which material is resistant to the temperature
that develops during ironing, characterised in that the material layer (2) is undetachably provided all around with a sleeve-like holder
(3) provided with an opening (5), through which a stretching element (4) can be drawn,
which stretching element exits at one end of the material layer (2) and which is provided
with a tightening element (6) at that location for tightening the stretching element
(4) round the ironing board, the material of which material layer is elastic.
8. A method for installing an ironing board cover (1) on an ironing board, which ironing
board cover (1) is laid on the ironing board, characterised in that said ironing board cover (1) is an ironing board cover (1) according to claims 1
- 7, and in that the stretching element (4) is drawn through the tightening element (6) and tightened
round the ironing board with a correct fit.
