(54) Light apparatus with a movable or removable handle

(57) Embodiments show a light apparatus comprising a support structure for supporting a light emitter and a handle, wherein the handle is fixed to the support structure, so that the handle can be repeatedly removed and again fixed or repeatedly removed relative to the support structure (10) to a first position (15) in which the handle extends above the surface (11) of the support structure (10) to a smaller degree compared to a different second position (17) or does not extend above the surface (11).

Description

[0001] Embodiments of the invention relate to a light apparatus, such as a spotlight or a moving head.

[0002] Light apparatus can be used to light up scenery, for example, in a theater, on a stage, in a dance hall or a building etc. Such light apparatus are often used only for a certain limited time and hence, afterwards they are taken down and transported to the next place of action. This means, that such a light apparatus may often be set up and taken down again at different locations. Therefore, it would be desirable to facilitate the set up and the dismantling of the light apparatus at different places. A light apparatus may have to be carried, lifted or moved in general. It may be stored in a box or housing for transportation between different places of action or for storage. Furthermore, a light apparatus may be on the one hand quite heavy to carry and on the other hand the light apparatus may comprise a more or less bulky shape so that carrying or lifting may be difficult.

[0003] In the US Patent Application US 2009/0310375, a light fixture with a handle is described, wherein the handle is rigid or fixedly connected with a yoke for supporting a rotatable head of the light fixture. By placing the handles as high as possible in relation to the light fixture, the light fixture can be carried in a very stable manner.

[0004] However, for transportation, e.g. in boxes, for storing or for installing the light apparatus at a place of action a handle fixedly connected to the light apparatus may be obstructive, impractical or inconvenient. A light apparatus comprising a fixedly connected handle may need bigger boxes for transportation since the fixedly arranged handles enlarge the volume of the light fixture. Furthermore, such a fixedly connected handle may be impractical or inconvenient for installing the light apparatus at a place of action, or even dangerous during operation of a light apparatus. A plurality of light apparatus and also other electrical equipment, like fans etc, may be installed close to each other at a place of action, so that a plurality of (power-) supply cables etc. might be arranged. In other words, there may be a lot of (electrical-) cables and other installed equipment at the place of action, so that a fixedly arranged handle on a light apparatus may get caught with the handle on such a cable or other equipment parts during operation or during the installation of the stage technique. As a consequence damage may occur, e.g. to the light apparatus or to other equipment parts. This risk is increased if one takes into account that such light apparatus are often rotatable and moveable during operation in order to create special light effects. Therefore, a fixedly arranged handle to the light apparatus may be obstructive during the operation of the light apparatus.

[0005] In addition, the appearance of a light apparatus with a fixedly arranged handle might be considered by a person who is attending an event that is lit up by the light apparatus as not desired and optical disturbing. This means, a fixedly arranged handle to the light apparatus may be considered as less handsome than without such a handle.

[0006] Therefore, it would be desirable to provide a light apparatus which facilitates carrying and transporting and that furthermore avoids the above mentioned problems.

[0007] These objects are achieved by the light apparatus according to claim 1 and claim 15.

[0008] The finding of the invention is to make the handle repeatedly removable and again fixable or repeatedly moveable relative to the support structure for supporting a light emitter, to a position in which the handle extends above a surface of the support structure to a smaller degree compared to a different second position or does not extend above the surface

[0009] According to the present invention a light apparatus is provided comprising a support structure for supporting a light emitter and a handle, wherein the handle is fixed to the support structure so that the handle can be repeatedly removed and again fixed or repeatedly moved relative to the support structure to a first position in which the handle extends above a surface of the support structure to a smaller degree compared to a different second position or does not extend above the surface.

[0010] In some embodiments, the light apparatus may comprise a base, a housing, a fixture for connecting the housing wherein the handle is arranged at the base, the housing or the fixture. According to embodiments the handle may be further used to control the motion or the light effects of the light apparatus during operation or to turn off and on the power supply of light apparatus or to lock the light apparatus at a certain position.

With reference to the following description of the embodiments of the present invention, it is to be noted that for simplification reasons the same reference numerals will be used in the different figures for functionally identical or similarly acting or functionally equal or equivalent elements or steps throughout the description.

[0012] In Fig. 1 a light apparatus according to an embodiment of the invention is shown. The light apparatus 100 may comprise a support structure 10 for supporting a light emitter 12. The support structure may comprise a housing 10a and a base 10c coupled to each other via, e.g. a pivot joint 13. In other embodiments of the invention, the support structure 10 can comprise another shape or other parts for supporting the light emitter 12. The light apparatus comprises a handle 20 which is more detailed shown in Fig. 1b.

[0013] As it is schematically depicted in Fig. 1b the light apparatus 100 comprises a handle 20, wherein the handle is fixed to the support structure 10, e.g. the housing 10a, so that the handle can repeatedly moved 21 relative to the support structure 10 to a first position 15 in which the handle 20 extends above a surface 11 of the support structure 10 to a smaller degree compared to a different second position 17 or does not extend above the surface 11. In other embodiments the handle 20 may be configured so that the handle can be repeatedly removed from the light apparatus and again fixed. Removing and fixing of the handle can be performed without destroying the light apparatus or the handle.

[0014] The handle 20 may be configured, for example, to move, to carry, to lift or to push the light apparatus. The light apparatus may comprise a plurality of handles that are fixed in the manner described above to the support structure 10. One or more persons may be able to carry the light apparatus using the handle. This means, the handle 20 fixed to the light apparatus may be, for example, advantageously for installing the light apparatus at a place of action or to transport - carry, lift etc. - the light apparatus to a certain location. Removing or moving the handle 20 to a first position 15 in which the handle 20 extends above a surface 11 of the support structure 10 to a smaller degree compared to a different second position 17 or does not extend above the surface 11 may be advantageously during operation of the light apparatus or for storing the light apparatus in boxes etc. Do benefit from both advantages the handle 20 may be configured so that the handle can repeatedly moved 21 relative to the support structure 10 to a first position 15 in which the handle 20 extends above a surface 11 of the support structure 10 to a smaller degree compared to a different second position 17 or does not extend above the surface 11.

[0015] In Fig. 1b a handle 20 is exemplarily shown which can be pulled out, e.g. for carrying the light apparatus and during operation of a light apparatus, for example, the handle may be folded down in a recess 25 or cave of the support structure 10. As a consequence, the handle is not visible anymore for an observer and is not disturbing during the operation of the light apparatus or during transportation. Furthermore, the shape or design of the light apparatus is not disfigured by the handle during operation. This may be the case, if the handle is significantly extending above a surface of the support structure during the operation. The handle 20 may be configured to be repeatedly moved relative to the support structure. This means, the handle can be pulled out and again slid into the support structure. In a first position 15 the handle may be slid into the support structure 10 so that the handle extends above the surface 11 of the support structure 10 to a smaller degree compared to a different second position 17, if the handle 20 is pulled out of the support structure. According to embodiments the support structure may comprise, e.g. a recess or a cave so that the handle 20 can completely disappear in the support structure and hence is not visible anymore by a person looking at the light apparatus.

[0016] In Fig. 1c, in a schematic drawing a support structure 10 with a rotatable handle 20 is schematically depicted. In this embodiment the handle may be coupled to the support structure via a handle fixture 30, e.g. a hinge etc. For carrying the light apparatus the handle 20 may be tilted to a second position 17 wherein the second position 17 is more raised or elevated compared to the first position 15 in which the handle extends above the surface 11 of the support structure 10 to a smaller degree compared to the second position 17. The light apparatus may be carried by tilting the handle 20 to the second position 17. After carrying the light apparatus the handle 20 can be tilted back with a tilt motion 22 to the first position 15, in which the handle is less elevated than in the second position 17.

[0017] According to embodiments the handle may be lockable in the first position and it may be lockable in the second position by mechanical means, e.g. a cotter, a spring or a spring lock. Therefore, in embodiments the handle may comprise mechanical, electrical or magnetic means to release or to lock the handle at a certain position, e.g. the first position or the second position.

[0018] As it is schematically shown in Fig. 1d, the light apparatus 100 may comprise a handle which is, e.g. repeatedly screwable by a rotary motion 23 into and again out of the support structure 10. This handle may be screwed in for carrying the light apparatus and afterwards the screwable handle may be removed. For that, the support structure 10 may comprise a handle fixture 30 which is configured to mechanically, electrically or magnetically couple the handle 20 with the support structure 10, so that the handle can be repeatedly removed and again fixed or repeatedly moved relative to the support structure 10 to a position in which the handle extends above the surface 11 of the support structure 10 to a smaller degree compared to a different second position or does not extend above the surface 11.

[0019] In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1d, the handle fixture 30 may be a thread, for example, a mating thread, that fits to the screwable handle 20. In embodiments the handle may have a different shape. The handle 20 may be formed, e.g. as a hook, a ring or an eye. The handle 20 may be configured so that the light apparatus can be lifted by an apparatus, e.g. a crane or a chain block. The handle may be configured so that one or more persons can carry or lift the light apparatus. A light apparatus may comprise one or more handles as described above, wherein the handles are fixed to the support structure 10.

[0020] According to another embodiment, which is schematically depicted in Fig. 1e, a handle 20 is fixable to the support structure 10, so that the handle can be repeatedly removed and again fixed 62. In Fig. 1e, the handle 20a may be fixed to the support structure and, e g., by means of a lateral pressure 63 to the lateral guide 20c of the handle 20a; the handle 20a can be removed. The removed handle 20b is separated from the support structure 10, and can be again fixed to the support structure 10 in the same manner. The support structure 10 may comprise a respective handle fixture 30 (not shown in Fig. 1e) which is configured to repeatedly fix and release the handle without destroying the support structure or the handle. The handle can be repeatedly removed and again fixed.

[0021] According to some embodiments the mechanism to fix or lock and to release the handle may be different. It may be, for example, a mechanical, an electrical or magnetic mechanism. It is obvious to a person skilled in the art that there exist different methods and mechanism for a handle fixture to release and to lock the handle repeatedly. The handle 20a may be fixed to the light apparatus 100 for carrying, lifting or moving light apparatus 100 and it may be removed so that the handle 20b is locally separated from the support structure.

[0022] According to embodiments of the invention a handle 20 and a support structure 10 needs not to be made of one piece or may not to be formed integrally. The handle 20 and the support structure 10 may be mechanically, electrically, mechanically connected or coupled via a handle fixture to each other. The handle fixture may comprise means for fixing, coupling or connecting the support structure with the handle. Such a handle fixture 30 may comprise, e.g. a thread, a pivot joint, a hinge, a cotter, a spring, a spring lock etc. According to embodiments a handle may be configured to be repeatedly removed and again fixed or to be repeatedly moved relative to the support structure, for example by a linear motion 21, a tilt motion 22, a rotary motion 23 or any motion combination thereof. According to embodiments a light apparatus may comprise support structure 10 for supporting a light emitter 12, wherein the support structure 10 is configured repeatedly fixing a handle 20 so that the handle can be repeatedly removed and again fixed by being repeatedly moved relative to the support structure 10 to a first position 15 in which the handle extends above a surface of the support structure to a smaller degree compared to a different second position 17 or does not extend above the surface 11.

[0023] In Fig. 2a a schematic light apparatus 100 is shown. The light apparatus may comprise a base 10c, a housing 10a for the light emitter 12 and a fixture 10d. The fixture 10d may be configured to connect the housing 10a to the base 10c. As can be seen schematically in Fig 2a, a handle or a plurality of handles 20 may be arranged at different locations of the support structure 10. In Fig. 2a a plurality of possible locations for a handle are depicted. In general a single handle or two handles may be sufficient for carrying and transporting the light apparatus.

[0024] The handles 20 can be arranged at the base 10c, at the housing 10a or at the fixture 10d. The fixture 10d for connecting the housing 10a with the base 10c may comprise a U-shape form or may be formed like a yoke. The fixture 10d may be rotatable 23 relative to the base 10c and the housing 10a may be rotatable 23 relative to the fixture 10d. The housing 10a for the light emitter 12 may comprise an opening 18 for a light beam emitted during the operation of the light apparatus. The support structure 10 may comprise, for example, one or more pivot joints or ball and socket joints to allow a rotary 23 or tilt 22 motions of the housing 10a and the fixture 10d relative to the base 10c.

[0025] As can be seen in Fig. 2a, a handle 20 can be fixed to the support structure 10 at different locations. A handle 20 may be arranged at the top of the sidewall of the housing 10a close to the opening 18 for a light beam emitted by the light emitter 12. The sidewall may comprise a thickness D, which is sufficient to incorporate the handle which is pushed or folded down to a first position. The handle may extend above a surface of the support structure 10 within a range of 1mm to 5cm in a first position 15. A wall of the support structure, which is configured to incorporate at least partly the handle if the handle is in a first position 15, may comprise a thickness D from 1 cm to 15 cm.

[0026] A handle 20 may be repeatedly movable relative to the support structure 10 by rotary motion 23, a linear motion 21, a tilt motion 22 or a combination thereof. A handle as described therein, may be fixed to an upper side of a U-shaped fixture 10d. The upper edge may be above the center of gravity 49 of the light apparatus. According to embodiments a handle may be arranged above the center of gravity 49 of the light apparatus. The handle may be configured to be folded down or pushed into support structure to a first position 15 and repeatedly pulled out of the upper or top edge 10d' of the U-shaped fixture 10d. The U-shaped fixture may be a yoke.

[0027] According to embodiments the handle 20 can also be arranged at a sidewall of the support structure 10. This means, the handle 20 may be, for example, fixed to the sidewall of the housing 10a, to the sidewall of the fixture 10d or to a sidewall of the base 10c. An inventive handle may also be fixed to the base 10c of the support structure 10. The support structure may comprise one or more recesses or caves to incorporate the handle if slid, pushed, tilted or rotated to the first position where the handle extends less above the surface of the supports structure compared to another position, for example, the second position. The handle may be completely folded away in the support structure so that the handle does not extend at all above the surface of the support structure. This means, the handle may be hidden from an observer. The inventive handle may be hidden during operation of the light apparatus and the handle may be pulled out for carrying, transporting or lifting the light apparatus. During operation the light apparatus may generate a certain light effect and may be perform movements.

[0028] In Fig. 2b, a schematic detailed drawing of a fixture 10d being part of the support structure 10 is depicted. In this embodiment, a foldaway handle 20 is schematically depicted. This handle 20 can be folded down in the recess 25 of the fixture 10d. The handle 20 can be repeatedly pulled out and pulled down by a linear motion 21. The handle can be pushed in to a first position 15 and pulled up in a second position 17. The handle 20 may extend to a less degree above the surface 11 of the fixture 10d in a first position 15 than in a second position 17, where the handle is pulled out.

[0029] According to embodiments the support structure 10 may comprise a recess 25 or cave and wherein the handle 20 is arrangeable in the recess 25 at the first position 15 so that the handle extends above the surface 11 of the support structure 10d to a smaller degree compared to a different second position 17 or in which the handle does not extend above the surface. The support structure 10, in this case the fixture 10d being part of the support structure 10 may comprise a handle fixture 30 which is configured to mechanically couple the handle 20 with the support structure 10. The handle fixture 30 may be, for example, a cotter or a spring lock, as it is schematically shown in Fig. 2b. According to other embodiments the handle fixture may be a thread, a joint, a pivot joint, a ball and socket joint, etc.

[0030] In Fig. 2c a schematic side view of a light apparatus 100 comprising a support structure 10 with a housing 10a, a fixture 10d and a base 10c is shown. The base 10c is mechanically coupled to the fixture 10d, for example, by a joint 13, e.g. a pivot joint. The fixture 10d is also coupled via a joint 13 to the housing 10a. The housing 10a may be rotatable in relation to the fixture 10d and the fixture 10d may be rotatable in relation to the base 10c by the pivot joints 13. The sidewall 10d" of the fixture 10d may comprise a recess 25 so that a handle can be incorporated therein. The handle 20 can be tilted by a tilt motion 22 so that the light apparatus 10 can be carried or lifted by means of the handles 20 being in a second position 17. The handle 20 can be re-tilted in the recess or cave 25, so that the handle extends to a smaller degree above the surface of the sidewall 10d" of the fixture compared to the handle in the second position 17.

[0031] According to some embodiments the handle 20 does not extend at all above the surface 11 of the support structure 10 in a first position 15. According to another embodiment which is schematically depicted in Fig. 2d a light apparatus 100 may comprise a support structure 10 wherein the support structure 10 comprises a housing 10a and a fixture 10d for the housing 10a. The housing 10a may be rotatable on a swing mechanism 13. On the contrary side of the opening 18 of the housing 10a a handle fixture 30 may be integrated in the housing 10a. Therewith, a handle 20 can be fixed to the support structure so that during transportation or carrying the opening 18 is protected by the fixture or in other embodiments, not shown in Fig. 2d, by the base 10c. The opening 18 may comprise a lens or lens system which might be easily broken and which therefore should be protected during transportation of the light apparatus 100. In this embodiment the handle 20 may be a hook which can be screwed by a rotary motion 23 in the housing 10a. The housing 10a may comprise a handle fixture 30 which fits to the screwable handle 20. For transportation, the housing 10a can be rotated so that the opening 18 of the housing is protected by the fixture 10d or by a base of the support structure 10c. The screwable handle 20 can be screwed into the support structure and hence the light apparatus can be carried or lifted to the desired place. Afterwards the handle can be removed again. During carrying or transporting the housing 10a may be mechanically locked so that the opening 18 of the housing is protected by the fixture 10d or the base 10c.

[0032] In Fig. 3a, a schematic prospective view of a light apparatus 100 according to a further embodiment is shown. The light apparatus 100 comprises a support structure 10 which may comprise housing 10a; a fixture 10d for connecting the housing 10a with the base 10c. The housing may be rotatable relative to the fixture 10d and the fixture 10d may be rotatable relative to the base 10c. The fixture 10d may be, for example, a one armed fixture so that the housing 10a is only via one joint 13 mechanically coupled to the fixture 10d. The housing 10a may comprise a light emitter 12, which is configured to emit during operation a light beam 73. The light apparatus may comprise a power supply 35, which supplies power, for example, to the light emitter 12 and to one or more motors for rotating the housing and/or the fixture relative to each other. In Fig. 3a, the inventive handles 20 may be folded down in the housing 10a to a first position.

[0033] According to embodiments of the invention an inventive handle 20 may comprise additional functionalities. For example, if a removable handle is fixed to the support structure or if a handle is moved relative to the support structure to a second position 17 (see Fig. 3b) a housing or head of a moving head may be mechanically, electrically or magnetically locked at a certain position. This means, the handle can act as a switch which locks or unlocks the housing depending on the position of the handle or depending whether the handle is fixed or removed relative to the support structure 10. The first and the second position of the handle may be regarded as a certain switch position. Therefore, by means of the handle, e.g. the power supply of a light apparatus may be turned on or off and by means of the handle and its respective position a moving head or housing 10a may be mechanically locked. If the handle is in the second position 17, e.g. during carrying or transportation, the power of the light apparatus may be turned off and/or the housing 10a may be locked at a certain position by means of the handle. In that, a damage of the light apparatus may be prevented during transportation.

[0034] A light apparatus 100 may comprise a respective locking mechanism so that a housing 10a is locked relative to other parts of the support structure, if the handle is fixed to the support structure or the handle is fixed to the support structure at the second position 17. If the handle is moved to the second position 17 or, if the handle is removed from the support structure 10, a bolt may be activated by means of a spring which locks a joint 13 at a certain position so that the housing is locked. This means, the bolt may mechanically block a further movement of the joint. An activation of such a bolt can be achieved in different ways, e.g. by a mechanically, electrically or magnetically. According to other embodiments a clamp may be activated, if the handle is fixed to the support structure or the handle is fixed to the support structure at the second position 17, wherein the clamp blocks the joint so that the housing is mechanically locked.

[0035] According to other embodiments the power of an electric motor may be turned off, if the handle is fixed to the support structure, or if the handle is fixed to the support structure at the second position 17, and hence a movement of the joint may be blocked by the electric motor itself. Therewith, the housing may be locked also. According to further embodiments the locking may be achieved by mechanical, electrical or a magnetic means. For example, a locking mechanism may be used which is decelerating or arresting a movement of a joint. For that, a mechanical, electrical or magnetic brake may be activated.

[0036] According to embodiments a pan-movement and/or a tilt-movement of the housing and/or the fixture may be blocked or permitted depending on the position of the handle relative to the support structure or depending whether the handle is fixed or removed from the support structure. The support structure may comprise the housing, a base and a fixture. The handle can be used to arrest the head of a spotlight, for example, during transportation of the spotlight. According to embodiments the housing and/ or the fixture may be arrested if the handle is fixed to the support structure or if the handle is fixed at the second position 17, so that, for example, a pan- and/or a tilt-movement is prevented. If the handle is removed or if the handle is fixed in the first position the housing and/ or the fixture is movable so that the light apparatus can be applied in a normal manner to light up a scenery.

[0037] In Fig. 4a, a schematic detailed drawing of a part of a fixture 10d, which comprises a foldaway handle 20, is shown. According to this embodiment, a simple switch function for turning on and off the power of a light apparatus is explained. Inside of the fixture 10d the power supply line 46 for the light apparatus 100 is arranged, wherein between two electrodes or contacts 46a and 46b a gap 46c exists. This means, the power supply line 46 is interrupted so that the light apparatus does not work if the gap 46c between the two electrodes 46a and 46b is not bridged. Both electric contacts 46a and 46b may be arranged within the fixture 10d so that the handle which may comprise an electrical contact 50 bridges the contact between both electrodes 46a and 46b if the handle 20 is pushed into the first position 15. If the handle is pushed to the first position 15 the electrical contact 50 may be pushed to the position 50a so that the gap 46c between the contacts 46a and 46b is bridged and therefore the power supply for the light apparatus is turned on. Accordingly, if the light apparatus has to be carried or lifted the handle 20 is pulled out to the position 17 and the electrical contact is again interrupted.

[0038] According to other embodiments the handle 20 may comprise more complex electronic circuitry to control light effects and the light beam of the light apparatus and/or the movement of the light apparatus, for example, of a moving head. In Fig. 4b, a removable handle 20 may be configured as a remote control comprising a battery 35 as well as an electronic circuitry to remote control the light apparatus 100. Furthermore, the handle may comprise buttons 53 or a small display 52, in general, input means for controlling the light apparatus 100. The handle may act as a remote control that is working, for example, with an infrared light 61. By means of the handle with control function light effects of the light apparatus and/or the movement of the light apparatus and/or the power supply of the light apparatus may be controlled. A pan- and/or a tilt-movement of the housing 10a may be lockable by means of the handle with control function.

[0039] It is obvious to a person skilled in the art that there are many possibilities for realizing such a handle with control function. The handle may act as a switch and the position of the handle relative to the support structure of the light apparatus 100 may be related to a switch position so that different functionalities of the light apparatus can be controlled depending on the position.
