Description

[0001] This invention concerns a fastening unit for assembly of an outer shielding member for the protection of side components of a roof window sash against any weather conditions, which is mounted on sash components. The shielding members are mounted on the both sides of the sash. In a typical rectangular structure the sash is usually a mirror image of the plane perpendicular to the axis of pivoting, so the shielding members are also symmetrical and symmetrically arranged.

[0002] Roof windows are equipped on their outer side with shielding members, usually formed from metal sheet and protecting the window frame and the sash against the adverse impact of weather. The window frame shielding members are usually fixed and mate the flashing that seals the connection between the window frame and the roof covering, whereas the sash shielding members are usually fixed to the corresponding sash component.

[0003] For roof windows with pivot-hung sashes the complete shielding member of the side components usually consists of two parts. One part, situated above the sash axis of pivoting, is fixed to the window frame and at the same time it is a shielding member of the window frame. The other one, secured to the sash side component, under its axis of pivoting, will be hereinafter referred to as a sash shielding member. Both parts are shaped so that after the sash has been closed, they contact each other near the sash axis of revolution, forming a joint that protects the structure against the weather.

[0004] The shielding members are most often fastened with screws, catches and rivets, and they have assembly holes at both ends, in addition the hole spacing is constant. The shielding member of the sash is usually fastened with assembly sockets placed in the sash side components, most often in its bottom corner, in addition the assembly sockets may be slidable or fixed. The other assembly point for the shielding member, near the sash axis of pivoting, is usually comprised of assembly sockets seated in fasteners constituting a part of the pivot hinge.

[0005] A hinge for a roof window with a pivot-hung sash is known from description WO 2006002633, this hinge is fitted with two fasteners with screw holes. One fastener is snap fastened in a holder constituting a monolithic member of the base plate seated on the sash and the other one constitutes a monolithic part of a hinge intermediate member, this monolithic part is riveted to the base plate seated on the side component of the window frame. The position of the both fasteners with screw holes is fixed relative to the base plates of the pivot hinge.

[0006] As is shown by the experience, the securing of shielding members to side components of a window with fastening screws put into holes with a fixed position causes assembly problems. Even though the technological regime is followed, often the hole spacing in the window side component is not the same as the screw hole spacing in the shielding member. The difference in the span results also from a different thermal expansion of the shielding member material and of the window side component material. This phenomenon, at substantial ambient temperature differences, results in the lack of precise fit of the span of assembly sockets in the window components and the holes in the shielding member. If the corresponding pairs of holes and sockets, in window components and shielding members connected together are not coaxial as required, the fastening screw is screwed in at an angle other than 90°, or in an extreme case it is not possible to screw it into the prepared assembly hole. This hinders assembly work and affects the tightness and aesthetic qualities of the connection of the shield members to the side components of the window.

[0007] A solution, where at least one fastener seated slidably on a rectangular arm is proposed to be inserted into the hinge, is known from description WO 2008010735. The fastener has an assembly socket perpendicular to the direction of its shift on the arm in the hinge. The other fastening point of the shielding member in this case, in any solution, has a fixed position relative to the sash. This solution, despite its advantages, causes a possibility of an uncontrolled change in the shielding member position relative to the position designed in the area of its mating the window frame shielding member, fixed in the upper part of the window frame, and thus causing a leak.

[0008] Also a solution disclosed in description WO 9951831 is known, where the sash shielding member, therein referred to as the cap member, is connected to the sash with two assembly points arranged at the ends of the shielding member. At the top point, situated near the sash axis of pivoting, the shielding member is fixed with typical fasteners. However, at the bottom point, it is mounted slidably in the direction parallel to the side edge of the sash with a catching means, comprising a catching bracket with a keyhole type hole, fastened to the shielding member, and a pin member fastened to the side component of the sash. It is a simple solution, however it lacks a permanent protection of the shielding member against accidental loosening or sliding out if it is not secured in the top fastening point.

[0009] The objective of the invention is to eliminate inconveniences related to the assembly of the shielding member on the side component of a sash by applying a unit that fastens the shielding member in the bottom assembly point, located basically at the sash corner, in addition the top assembly point has a fixed position relative to the sash.

[0010] The fastening unit consists of a fastener with an assembly socket, a base member with a mounting arm on which the fastener is mounted in a slidable manner, and a positioning stopper.

[0011] The fastening unit has a double role - of a slidable assembly socket for fasteners and of slides that guide the sash during the final stage of closing it in the window frame. The fastener with the assembly socket is mounted in a slidable manner on the base member placed in the stopper and together with the stopper - fixed on the structural component of the sash.

[0012] The fastening unit is placed advantageously in the lower part of the side component, in the sash corner. The stopper and the base member may be a homogeneous inseparable member.

[0013] The base member, which is fixed directly to the sash structure, is a base for the slidable mounting of the fastener and the fixing of the stopper, which also performs a function of a positioning member to ensure the correct mounting of the sash in the window frame during its closing. The mounting arm with a non-round profile is an integral part of the base member, advantageously the arm has a rectangular profile, lead out in a direction basically parallel to the longitudinal edge of the sash side component. The fixed mounting arm mates slidably the fastener, which has a mounting channel with a shape and dimensions reproducing the shape and dimensions of the mounting arm. The non-round profile of the mounting arm prevents the fastener from turning around the mounting arm, which is a desirable effect.

[0014] The fastener is advantageously a single body component with any shape resulting from its design and strength conditions, having an assembly socket for means that fasten the shielding member, in the assembly situated perpendicular to the sash surface plane. The direction of the mounting channel is advantageously perpendicular to the assembly socket, in addition both structural members of the fasteners do not cross each other. The length of the mounting arm is selected so that the fastener may be shifted lengthwise to compensate a misalignment of the mounting holes in the shielding member and the assembly holes, resulting from inaccuracies in workmanship and thermal elongations. The shift of the fastener is limited by the shape limiter with advantageously a U-shaped profile, formed in the base member and with one leg restrained in the base member. The width of the profile base determines the range of the fastener shift, while its legs limit this shift.

[0015] The stopper is a shape member consisting basically of a side arm and the bottom, the shape of which is adapted to the function performed and the adjoining sash components. The outer surface of the side arm of the stopper performs a role of a slide for mounting the sash in the window frame, while a mounting socket for the base member is formed on its inner surface. The socket is formed by two guides arranged symmetrically towards each other, the side arm and the bottom of the stopper. The direction of the guides is advantageously perpendicular to the plane of the sash. The bottom of the stopper stiffens and seals the connection to sash structural members. In addition, by means of the right shape of the surface it constitutes a seat for seals.

[0016] The base member has an additional component shaped in parallel to the guides in the stopper, for mounting the base member in the mounting socket formed in the stopper. It is a mounting profile with a shape fitted to the free space of the mounting socket formed by the guides. The role of the other mounting profile is performed by the limiting arm of the limiter. After sliding the base member with the mounted fastener into the mounting socket the whole is assembled in the sash structure in a way that prevents it to be disconnected.

[0017] The advantage of the application of a slidable assembly socket situated advantageously in the sash corner, with the other assembly socket fixed, is the certainty of correct screwing in of the assembly means in the case of a change in the assembly hole span in the shielding member caused by thermal expansion or e.g. imprecise workmanship of individual components that influence the final span of the assembly sockets.

[0018] The solution according to the invention is shown in embodiment examples in the drawings. The complete roof window with a pivot-hung sash is shown in assembly in fig. 1, while fig. 2 shows the complete pivot-hung sash. Fig. 3 shows a fragment of the sash with a typical arrangement of its structural components. Fig. 4 shows members of the fastening unit in an exploded view, while fig. 5 shows the same members after assembling.

[0019] The shielding member 1 is secured on the side component 2 of the sash in two points with screws 3. The fastening unit 4, located at the bottom corner of the sash, shown in fig. 4 in an exploded view and in fig. 5 in an assembled view is the first, movable assembly point. The fastening unit is made up of: the fastener 41, shown in fig. 6, with the assembly socket 411, the base member 42 with the mounting arm 421, on which the fastener 41 is mounted in a slidable manner and the stopper 43 which positions the sash in relation to the window frame during closing.

[0020] The fixed fastener 5 with the assembly socket 51, shown in fig. 5 in an exploded view, fixed on the sash hinge base plate secured to the sash is used for securing the shielding member 1 in the other, fixed assembly point. The shielding member 1 may also be mounted directly to the side member 2 of the sash with typical fasteners taking account of maintaining the tightness of the connection.

[0021] The base member 42 is fixed directly to the side member 2 of the sash and is the base for the slidable mounting of the fastener 41 and the fixing of the stopper 43. The base member 42 has a mounting arm 421, with a rectangular profile and a length adjusted to the width of the fastener 41 and the expected variability of the span of the assembly holes 7 in the shielding member 1. The mounting arm 421 mates slidably the fastener 41, through a mounting channel 412 with a shape and dimensions reproducing the shape and dimensions of the mounting arm 421. The mounting socket 411 for the screw 3 that secures the shielding member 1 is situated perpendicularly to the sash surface plane.

[0022] The shift of the fastener is limited by the limiter 422 with a U-shaped profile, formed in the base member 42. The limiter 422 profile legs are the members that limit the shift of the fastener 41. The limiter 422 consists of the fixed arm 422a fixed in the base member 42 body, and the limiting arm 422b connected together with the base of the profile 422c.

[0023] The method of assembly of the fastener 41 on the mounting arm 421 is shown with arrows in fig. 4. It consists in a slightly elastic deflection (action I) of the limiter 422 and putting (action II) the fastener onto the mounting arm. After the return (action III) of the limiter to its home position, the limiting arm 422a prevents the fastener from sliding out from the mounting arm.

[0024] The stopper 43 consists of a side arm 431 and the bottom 432, the outer shape of which is adapted to the adjoining sash components. The outer surface of the side arm 431 of the stopper performs a role of a slide that supports the correct mounting of the sash in the window frame, while a mounting socket for the base member 42 is formed in its inner surface. The socket is formed by two guides 433 arranged symmetrically towards each other, the side arm 431 and the bottom 432 of the stopper 43. The bottom of the stopper stiffens and seals the connection to the sash structural members and is a seat for seals in the sash.

[0025] To mount (action IV) the base member 42 in the mounting socket formed in the stopper 43, a mounting profile 423 with its shape adjusted to the guides 433 in the stopper 43 and the limiting arm 422b is used. After assembling all components of the fastening unit 4, the edge of the guide 433 formed in the stopper is and additional factor that limits the possibility of sliding the fastener out. After sliding the base member 42 with the mounted fastener 41 into the mounting socket, the whole is fixed in the sash structure in a way that prevents it to be disconnected. The shielding member 1 may be easily fastened through the assembly holes 7 with screws 3 to the so prepared assembly socket 411 and the assembly socket 51 in the fixed fastener.
