Field of the Invention
[0001] The invention relates to a compact the high performance initiator for high loading
of pyrotechnic material or other energetic materials which use separate sealed inner
container for very sensitive primary pyrotechnic material and hermetically separated
outer container for very high load of booster pyrotechnic material. It is intended
to ensure the function of various security systems, especially in automotive safety
systems.
Background of the Art
[0002] Currently there are advantageously used pyrotechnic initiators in the automotive
industry or in other related industries for some applications.
[0003] Increasing demands on the ignition performance of pyrotechnic initiators, trends
of simplifying products for automotive safety systems and operations and also their
manufacturing processes cause that it is essential to insert higher amount of different
energetic materials into these elements.
[0004] The initiator according to the
US patent 5 140 906 can contain higher amount of different energetic materials. However, it is rather
complicated, it contains many parts, many technological steps being necessary to its
production. Therefore it is costly, primarily thanks to using two headers - inner
header and outer header. These headers are connected each to other by two glass seals
- inner seal and outer seal. Moreover, the said inner header and outer header are
separated each from other through circular ceramic washer.
[0005] The inner plastic liner does not assure the hermetic tightness of the whole as the
moisture penetration through radial output holes is allowed. The embodiment with connected
cables does not assure the hermetic separation of the initiator charge from the output
charge which can lead to the moisture penetration from the output charge into the
initiator charge, possibly to the chemical interaction of these materials.
[0006] The described and depicted assembly is voluminous which complicates its putting on
standard automotive systems where standard shapes of the initiator body are required.
[0007] In reality, it is for standard well known designs of initiators currently solved
by increasing length of a metal container into which the larger amount of pyrotechnic
materials are filled. These booster pyrotechnic materials adversely affect sensitive
primary pyrotechnic material due to its chemical composition, content of volatile
substances and moisture. These negative impacts could lead to degradation of the product
or in the worst case to the failure of the initiator. It means that the possibilities
of increasing the performance of pyrotechnic initiators through a simple increase
of the pyrotechnic materials amount are limited and they are practically already exhausted.
Summary of the Invention
[0008] The disadvantages and imperfections of the known high performance initiators, designated
especially for the automotive industry, largely eliminates high performance initiator
for high loading of pyrotechnic material or other energetic materials consisting of
electrical contacts and contiguous closed space containing primary pyrotechnic material
and booster pyrotechnic material according to invention. Nature of the invention consists
in the fact that the initiator which contains the holder of contacts, which towards
inside the initiator has reduced diameter of the holder, where the inner container
is placed which contains primary pyrotechnic material and over the circumference is
sealed with reduced diameter of holder, over the inner container outer container is
inserted, and such initiator has that the outer container which contains booster pyrotechnic
material on its inner edge is adjacent to the holder of contacts with which it is
sealed around the circumference, while the area of the holder of contacts with the
adjacent edge of the outer container is integrated into the plastic body which carries
also contacts at the same time, wherein the circumference connection of the inner
container with the reduced diameter of the holder and/or circumference connection
of the outer container with the holder of contacts is hermetic and is performed by
first and/or the second laser weld.
[0009] The volume of the outer container which contains booster pyrotechnic material is
advantageously equal to 1 to 200 times the volume of the inner container containing
primary pyrotechnic material. The outer container can be surrounded by an insulating
cup edges of which are then integrated into the plastic body.
[0010] High performance initiator according to the invention is a compact initiator with
arbitrarily large and hermetically separated outer container for very high loading
of the booster pyrotechnic material which has hermetically separated sensitive primary
pyrotechnic material from other used pyrotechnic materials or other energetic materials.

Possibility of Industrial Application
[0014] High performance initiator for high loading of pyrotechnic material or other energetic
materials according to the invention is applicable primarily in various safety systems,
passive safety device of passengers of car or pedestrians, particularly for gas generator
for airbags without the need for separate housing of booster pyrotechnic material.
In addition, the invention can be used in the construction of automatic fire extinguishing
systems for industry and household use.

materials consisting of electrical contacts and contiguous closed space containing
primary pyrotechnic material and booster pyrotechnic material, which contains the
holder (1) of contacts, which towards inside the initiator has reduced diameter (2)
of the holder, where the inner container (3) is placed which contains primary pyrotechnic
material (4) and over the circumference is sealed with reduced diameter (2) of holder,
over the inner container (3) outer container (5) is inserted, wherein the outer container
which contains booster pyrotechnic material (6) on its inner edge is adjacent to the
holder (1) of contacts with which it is sealed around the circumference, while the
area of the holder (1) of contacts with the adjacent edge of the outer container (5)
is integrated into the plastic body (8) which carries also contacts (9) at the same
time, wherein the circumference connection of the inner container (3) with the reduced
diameter (2) of the holder and/or circumference connection of the outer container

second laser weld (10a, 10b).
2. High performance initiator for high loading of pyrotechnic material according to the
claim 1, characterized by the fact that the volume of the outer container (5) which contains booster pyrotechnic
material (6) is equal to 1 to 200 times the volume of the inner container (3) containing
primary pyrotechnic material (4).
1. Der Hochleistungsauslöser für die Hochladung des pyrotechnischen Materials oder anderer
energetischen Materialien bestehend aus Elektrokontakten und zusammengehörenden geschlossenen
Räumen enthaltend pyrotechnisches Ausgangsmaterial und pyrotechnisches Zündungs/Booster-Material,
das die Kontakthalter (1) beinhaltet, die in der Richtung des inneren Auslösers den
reduzierten Durchmesser (2) des Halters reduzieren, wo der Innenbehälter (3) angebracht
ist, der das pyrotechnisches Ausgangsmaterial (4) enthält und ist abgedichtet über
den Kreisumfang mit dem reduzierten Durchmesser (2) des Halters, auf den Innenbehälter
(3) ist der Außenbehälter (5) eingesetzt, worin der Außenbehälter (5), der das pyrotechnische Zündungs/Booster-Material (6) enthält
und grenzt an die innere Kante des Kontakthalters (1), mit dem sie rund um den Kreisumfang
abgedichtet ist, während der Bereich des Kontakthalters (1) mit der angrenzenden Kante
des Außenbehälters (5) in die plastische Einheit (8) integriert ist, die auch in der
gleichen Zeit die Kontakte (9) trägt, worin die Verbindung des Umfanges vom Innenbehälter
(3) mit dem reduzierten Durchmesser (2) des Halters und/oder der Verbindung des Kreisumfanges
vom Außenbehälter (5) mit dem Kontakthalter (1) hermetisch ist und wird mit dem ersten
und/oder dem zweiten Laserschweißnaht (10a, 10b) durchgeführt.
2. Der Hochleistungsauslöser für die Hochladung des pyrotechnischen Materials gemäß dem
Anspruch 1, worin das Volumen des Außenbehälters (5), der das pyrotechnische Zündungs/Booster-Material
(6) beinhaltet, ist gleich von 1 bis 200 mal dem Volumen des Innenbehälters (3), der
das pyrotechnische Ausgangsmaterial (4) enthält.
1. Initiateur hautement performant pour charge élevée de matériau pyrotechnique ou d'autres
matériaux énergétiques contenant des contacts électriques et un espace fermé adjacent
contenant un matériau pyrotechnique primaire et un matériau pyrotechnique secondaire,
comportant un porte-contacts (1), ayant vers l'intérieur de l'initiateur un diamètre
réduit (2) du porte-contacts, où est placé un récipient interne (3), contenant le
matériau pyrotechnique primaire (4) et étant fermé sur son pourtour par le diamètre
réduit (2) du porte-contacts, un récipient externe (5) étant inséré à travers le récipient
interne (3), où le récipient externe (5) comporte un matériau pyrotechnique secondaire
(6) et étant adjacent sur le bord interne au porte-contacts (1), avec lequel il est
fermé sur le pourtour, tandis que la zone du porte-contacts (1) avec bord adjacent
du récipient externe (5) est intégrée dans un corps en plastique (8), tenant également
les contacts (9) dans le même temps, où le joint circonférentiel du récipient interne
(3) avec diamètre réduit (2) du porte-contacts et/ou le joint circonférentiel du récipient
externe (5) avec porte-contacts (1) est hermétique et réalisé par une première et/ou
deuxième soudure laser (10a, 10b).
2. Initiateur hautement performant pour charge élevée de matériau pyrotechnique selon
la revendication 1, où le volume du récipient externe (5), contenant le matériau pyrotechnique
secondaire (6), est égal à 1 à 200 fois le volume du récipient interne (3), contenant
le matériau pyrotechnique primaire (4).
