Technical Field of the Invention
[0001] The present invention relates to a safety lock with a high security of use, to be
mounted in general for doors, gates, safes, etc., more specifically a safety lock
which comprises a tumbler plate lock and an additional lock having a blockage pin
which ensure the safety of the safety lock against any action which falls within the
field of lock picking.
Background of the Invention
[0002] In particular, the present invention relates to a safety lock of the type referred
to as "plate lock", "lever lock", "double-sided lock" and "tumbler locks" which are
widely practiced in the art and each safety lock of the above mentioned type can be
opened/closed by a specific key preferably provided with double ore one sided tailpieces.
Said safety locks have at least one deadbolt inside a case associated to a plurality
of plates, also called gorges or tumblers, and a spring-latch with a key used to move
said tumblers from a forward closed position to a retracted open position.
[0003] The safety lock mechanism that opens and closes locks feature differentiated passage
notches which, when aligned, create the profile of the operating key. The interaction
of one of the bits of the key with the edge of the recesses causes, the movement of
the plurality of tumblers. An unauthorized person may use picklocks for tensioning'
the bolt member in the opening direction, slowly and selectively lift each individual
safety plate in an attempt to detect the corresponding enabling position. To extent
that, it is very important that to keep the position of the plurality of plates in
the safety locks for any type illicit opening. An unauthorized person may try to lift
each individual safety tumbler to detect the corresponding enabling position. So it
is considered that the key hole of the abovementioned type of the locks can be manipulated
by an unauthorized person by a lock pick or similar tools to retract the bolt also
by imposing excessive amount of power.
[0004] Moreover, the bolt member may be tensioned in the opening direction by a pusher and
the manipulation instrument is subsequently inserted, tumblers being pushed upwards
by rotation of the instrument itself. The picklock simulates the presence of the key
in the lock One of the solution according to the prior art is to close at least partially
key hole by a plate for preventing retraction of the tumblers.
[0005] Different type of lock mechanisms have been developed to prevent the bolts to be
retracted in tumbler locks. A prior art publication in the technical field of the
present invention may be referred to as
DE19906271 among others, the document disclosing a lock having lock bolt/deadbolt which moves
the security mechanism. Said lock comprises an integrated inbuilt safety mechanism
or a second cylinder lock which has a nose to prevent key hole closing at least partially
when it is in in a locked state. The prior art documents
EP903455 and
WO2009/057170 describe locks provided with security devices which are designed to prevent attempted
break-ins performed using the "sensing" technique.
[0006] The present invention provides an arrangement in a relation to the tumbler plate
lock with a conventional cylinder which is defined by the characterizing features
as defined in Claim 1.
[0007] Primary object of the present invention is to overcome the problem described, providing
the lock with an additional lock having blockage pin for blocking the tumblers and
also sliding bars, which prevent the retraction thereof by violent and/or tampering
means.
[0008] Another object of the present invention is to provide a safety lock with an additional
security improvement and enabling two side usage when is needed, without any significant
changes.
[0009] Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a safety lock,
whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief
hereinafter.
Summary of the Invention
[0010] The present invention relates to a safety lock which comprises a case; a bolt member
mounted movable in the case and displaceable, when in use, by means of rotation of
a key in the lock between a first position and a second position corresponding, respectively,
to the open condition and to the closed condition of the lock. Said safety lock further
comprises an upper sliding bar, lower sliding bar, an additional deadbolt within the
case having an additional lock member and additional deadbolt movably mounted in the
case and, when in use, translatable by rotation of a second key in the additional
lock between a first position and a second position corresponding, respectively, to
the open condition and to the closed condition of the additional lock. Said additional
lock member comprises at least one blockage pin which is shaped and dimensioned to
engage with corresponding protrusion provided at least one of sliding bars, when the
additional lock is in the closed condition, which block the movement of the deadbolt
and sliding bars.

[0013] The present invention relates to a safety lock (17) comprising a rigid box case (25),
in which a first position and a second position corresponding, respectively, to the
open condition and to the closed condition of the lock, and a plurality of tumblers
(11), also called gorges or plates, arranged in the case (25), an additional lock
(21), and displaceable by means of rotation of the key in the lock. The safety lock
(17) comprises a conventional type spring latch (16), pushed elastically towards a
position where it is extracted from the case (25). As shown in fig. 1, a cover (20)
is removed, the safety lock (17) has a substantially rectangular tumbler (11) form
by two long sides and two short sides and each tumbler (11) has a generally rectangular-shaped
opening which is called window (15). A plurality of tumblers (11), also called plates
or gorges provided with slots, are used with additional lock (21) which is placed
in interior volume of the rigid case (25) of the security lock (17).
[0014] Figure 2 demonstrates that to be retracted position of the actuator (23) with additional
deadbolt (29). Said deadbolt (12) comprises a bolt member (19) which extends through
casing and matches with the plurality of tumblers (11) with a guiding pin (13). Every
tumbler (11) has a window (15) in which the guiding pin (13) moves, when a key is
inserted and turned in the lock. The guiding pin (13), which protrudes transversely
from the bolt member (19), passes through the windows (15) of all the tumblers (11).
Said guiding pin (13) guides through the window of the tumblers upon the turn of the
key and determines the position of the deadbolt (12).
[0015] Firstly, the key (27) which has a preferably double bit with a certain profile of
recesses and projections is inserted inside the key hole (24) and is rotated. When
the key (27) is introduced into key hole (24) and rotated around its axis, preferably
four turn, and the indented edges of the bitted key come into contact in succession
with the edge portions of the tumblers (11). The interaction of one of the bits of
the key (27) with the edge of the recesses causes, the movement of the plurality of
tumblers (11). Every turn of the bitted key in the key hole is considered to be 180
degree around its axis, so that four turns means that two times 360 degree around
its axis.
[0016] The bolt member (19) mounted movable in the frame and displaceable by means of rotation
of a key (27) in the safety lock (17) between a first position and a second position
corresponding, respectively, to the open condition and to the closed condition of
the lock. The tumblers (11) are provided with toothed windows (15) substantially mating
with one another and having serrated edges. The key's bits engage with the corresponding
tumblers (11) and, if the key (27) has the right profiles, each tumbler (11) is moved
until it is aligned. It is known in the art that every turn of the key cause the lifting
of the plates at a certain height. So that, it is vital that keeping the position
of the plurality of plates in the safety lock (17) for any illicit opening. An unauthorized
person may try to lift each individual safety tumbler (11) to detect the corresponding
enabling position. Number of the tumblers (11) range between 3 and 9, preferably between
5 and 7.
[0017] In the preferred embodiment of the present invention that said additional lock (21)
is arranged to move individually from the tumblers (11). When the key (27) of the
tumbler plate lock is reached the end of its preferably four turns of rotation; it
causes a complete travel of the bolt member (19) and at the same time a vertically
displacement of an upper sliding bar (18a) and an lower sliding bar (18b) as shown
in fig. 4 and fig. 6a. Said upper sliding bar (18a) and lower sliding bar (18b) are
arranged to move synchronously upon the rotation of the key via the relation between
pin and slot defined on upper sliding bar (18a) and lower sliding bar (18b).
[0018] As shown in the fig 6a and fig 6b, the tumbler-plate lock and the additional lock
(21) is in communication with the sliding bars (18a, 18b) but the displacement of
the deadbolt (12) and the additional deadbolt (29) are arranged to move to separately
from each other. The underlying idea of the present invention is to prevent the movement
of the plurality of tumblers (11) as well as the sliding bars (18a, 18b) for lock
picking. To extent that, an additional lock (21) comprises a guding pin (13) protrudes
transversely from the actuator (23) that block the displacement of tumblers (11),also
sliding bars (18a, 18b), when it is brought in a closed position as shown in fig 3.
It is to be noted that number of the turn of key (27) can be varied, which is selected
defined four turns in tumbler plate lock with toothed window. Additionally, bolt member
(19) has a bolt member slot (14).
[0019] The bolt member (19) constituted by a metal plate mounted slidably within the case
(25) and having an edge, facing which are welded deadbolts (12), mounted slidably
through corresponding openings made in a side wall of the case. The introduction and
rotation of an authorized key (27) within the safety lock (17) enables control of
the displacement of the bolt member (19) between a position corresponding to the open
condition of the lock, in which the deadbolt (12) are retracted within the case (25),
and a position corresponding to the closed condition of the lock, in which the deadbolts
(12) project outside of the case (25) and are received in corresponding seats made
in a frame fixed to the doorpost, set adjacent to the door on which the safety lock
(17) is installed. Meanwhile, the upper sliding bar (18a) and the lower sliding bar
(18b) are arranged to move simultaneously vertically (-Y, +Y) in respect of the axis
of the deadbolt (12) where it is extracted and retraced from the case in - X and +X
direction.
[0020] The lower sliding bar (18b) is provided with an elongated lower sliding bar slot
(31) and the actuator (23) is provided with an elongated member slot (32). An additional
lock pin (35) is guided in the both lower sliding bar slot (31) and the member slot
(32). A pawl of the cylinder lock, upon rotation by the second key lock, engages with
the recesses of the actuator (23) and moves the actuator (23) and as well as the as
well as the additional deadbolt (29) of the additional locks (21). In the preferred
embodiments, the conventional cylinder is used for the displacement of the actuator
(23). There is another possibility that the protrusion (28) of the lower sliding bar
(18b) can be provide at upper sliding bar (18a).
[0021] As shown in fig.2, said actuator (23) comprises at least one blockage pin (22) which
is shaped and dimensioned to engage with a corresponding protrusion (28) provided
at least on one of the sliding bars (18a, 18b), when said additional lock (21) is
in the closed condition, so as to prevent the movement of the deadbolt (12) according
to its horizontal axis (-X, +X) and at least one sliding bar (18a, 18b) according
its vertical axis (-Y, +Y), against any illicit opening.
[0022] It is appreciated that the using of the additional lock (21) enhances of the security
lock (17) to any unauthorized attempts. As shown in fig 2 and fig 3, said additional
lock (21) comprises an additional deadbolt (29), mounted slidably through corresponding
openings made in a side wall of the case and the actuator (23) constituted also by
a plate mounted slidably within the case (25). Furthermore, the upper sliding bar
(18a) and the lower sliding bar (18b) are in a communication with slots and pins placed
on the said bars and bolt member (19).
[0023] Fig 2 demonstrates the displacement of the additional lock (21) between a position
corresponding to the open condition of the lock, in which the additional deadbolt
is retracted within the case, and a position corresponding to the closed condition
of the lock, shown in fig. 3, in which the additional deadbolt (29) project outside
of the case (25). When the additional lock (21) is brought to the closed condition,
the transversely blockage pin (22) of actuator (23) engages with the corresponding
protrusion of the lower sling bar (18b). When the protrusion of the lower sliding
bar (18b) and blockage pin (22) of the additional lock is matched, retraction of the
plurality of tumblers and as well as the displacement of the sliding bars (18a, 18b)
are blocked. The lower sliding bar slot (31) within a upper sliding bar pin (37) and
an additional lock pin (35) are accommodated to move the upper sliding bar (18a) and
lower sliding bar (18b) synchronously with tumblers (11) upon the rotation of the
key (27)
[0024] As mentioned before, the blockage pin (22) is moved on to the protrusion (28) in
virtue of conventional cylinder so as to limit the vertical (-Y, +Y) displacement
of the sliding bars (18a, 19b). The unauthorized person may try to lift each individual
safety tumbler (11) to detect the corresponding enabling position, even he is succeeded
to detect the corresponding enabling position, the retraction of the plurality of
tumblers (11) are still kept in the predetermined position by blocking vertical displacement
of the sliding bars (18a, 18b) and horizontal position of the bolt member (19). The
primary objective of the present invention is achieved by adding a blockage pin (22),
when the additional lock (21) is in its fully withdrawn position displacement of the
said tumblers (11) are kept and which ensures protection against break-in actions
such as lock picking.
[0025] When the authorized person wants to unlock the safety lock, firstly, he retracts
the additional deadbolt (29) in virtue of conventional type cylinder lock and then
unlock bolt by means of tumblers (11). The lower sliding bar (18b) defines an elongated
upper sliding bar slot (30) in which a pin is guided and engage with corresponding
slot of the bolt member (19), similarly, lower sliding bar (18b) defines an elongated
lower sliding bar slot (31) in which an additional lock pin (35) is guided and also
engage with corresponding the member slot (32) of the actuator (23). The member slot
(32) is provided with an elongated hole on the actuator (23) through which a pin (35)
passes.
[0026] The guiding pin (13) of the actuator (23), when brought in a closed position, keeps
a plurality of plates and sliding bars. The upper and lower sliding bar (18a, 18b)
and the bolt member (19) have elongated slots in which a pin also guided so as to
arrange vertical and horizontal movements.
[0027] The operation of the additional lock (21) shown in figures correspond to generally
one turn and the operation of the tumblers-plate lock correspond to generally more
than one turn must be repeated for the number of turns necessary to cause complete
opening/closing of the lock, which depend on the length of the toothed window (15)
of the tumblers (11). The tumbler-plate lock mechanism of the safety lock (17), shown
in fig. 4, is in a opened/first position, turning of the key (27) triggers the plurality
of tumblers (11) to project outside of the case (2). A safety lock pin (34) is guided
in slots which are provided at upper sliding bar (18a), lower sliding bar (18b) and
bolt member (19) passes through them.
[0028] It is to be noted that the main objective of the invention is aimed at effectively
block the tumblers in the locked condition with an arrangement of the blockage pin
(22). It constitutes an effective and reliable solution that eliminates the displacement
of the tumblers (11) and the sliding bars (18a, 18b) for using blockage pin (22) with
an additional lock (21). The invention ensures that security of the safety lock (17)
is enhanced not only with an additional lock (21) but also a blockage pin (22) of
the additional lock (21) which maintains the blockage of the system.
[0029] By means of a suitable tool, the unauthorized person may keep the bolt member (19)
forced so as to force its retraction and by means of a second tool lift one by one
the superimposed tumblers 11 until the bolt member (19) is released completely. This
kind of attacks may cause the retraction of the deadbolts (12). Blocking of the sliding
bars (18a, 18b) as well as the bolt member (19) produced by the stable engagement
of the blockage pin (22) of the actuator (23) with the protrusion (28) makes it impossible
for the deadbolt retracted motion by way of the action of the break-in tool.
[0030] The actuator (23) of the additional lock (21), as shown in figure3, carries the bolt
and has the member slot (32). The lower edge of the actuator (23) has at least one
teeth (36) on which acts the pawl of the cylinder lock in order to displace it, by
means of one or two turns, in the throwing or withdrawal (-X, +X) direction. Number
of the teeth (36) of the lower edge of the actuator (23) can be greater than that
shown in the drawings, in which case their total displacement would require more than
one turns of the cylinder lock.
1. A safety lock (17) comprising: a case (25); a bolt member (19) for moving at least
one deadbolt (12); a plurality of superimposed tumblers (11), each of which has a
toothed shaped window (15) in which a guiding pin (13) of the bolt member (19) adapted
to cross, mounted movable in the case (25) and displaceable, when in use, by means
of rotation of a key (27) between a first position and a second position corresponding,
respectively, to the open condition and to the closed condition of the lock;
at least one sliding bar (18a, 18b) is in a communication and arranged to move synchronously
with the bolt member (19);
an additional lock (21) having an actuator (23) for moving an additional deadbolt
(29) movably mounted in the case (25) and, when in use, translatable by rotation of
a second key in the additional lock (21) between a first position and a second position
corresponding, respectively, to the open condition and to the closed condition of
the additional lock (21),
wherein said actuator (23) comprises at least one blockage pin (22) which is shaped and dimensioned
to engage with a corresponding protrusion (28) provided at least on one of the sliding
bars (18a, 18b), when said additional lock (21) is in the closed condition, so as
to prevent the movement of
(i) the deadbolt (12) according to its horizontal axis (-X, +X) and
(ii) at least one sliding bar (18a, 18b) according its vertical axis (-Y, +Y), against
any illicit opening.
2. A safety lock (17) as in Claim 1, wherein said additional lock (21) comprises a cylinder
having a pawl, upon rotation by the second key, which engages with at least one of
teeth (36) defined at the lower edge of the actuator (23) and moves the actuator (23)
and as well as the additional deadbolt (29).
3. A safety lock (17) as in Claim 1, wherein the upper sliding bar (18a) and lower sliding
bar (18b) comprise, respectively, at least one elongated upper sliding bar slot (30)
and lower sliding bar slot (31) within which a upper sliding bar pin (37) and an additional
lock pin (35) are accommodated to move the upper sliding bar (18a) and lower sliding
bar (18b) synchronously with tumblers (11) upon the rotation of the key (27).
4. A safety lock (17) as in Claim 1, wherein each of tumblers (11) comprises a rectangular-shaped
toothed window (15) and at least one slot in which a guiding pin (13) is accommodated.
5. A safety lock (17) as in Claim 2, wherein a guiding pin (13) which guides through
the window (15) of the tumblers (11) upon the turn of the key (27) and determines
the position of the deadbolt (12), protrudes transversely from the bolt member (19)
and passes through the windows (15) of all the tumblers (11).
6. Said safety lock (17) according to any one of the previous claims, wherein the number
of said tumblers (11) range between 3 and 9, preferably between 5 and 7.
7. A safety lock (17) as in Claim 2, wherein the safety lock (17) comprises a safety
lock pin (34) which is guided in slots provided at upper sliding bar (18a), lower
sliding bar (18b) and bolt member (19).
8. A safety lock (17) as in Claim 2, wherein the actuator (23) is provided with an elongated
member slot (32).
