The single crystal seed has the minimum dimensions of 8 x 8 mm and length of 100 mm. The crystal growth rate and broadening of the crystal cone are maintained uniform at an angle of at least 60o from the crystal axis up to a diameter of at least 80% of the crucible diameter which is at least 100 mm. Thereafter the diameter thereof continues to be maintained by temperature regulation at the crystal/melt interface and by the crystal pulling and rotation speeds. The completion of the process occurs by separating the crystal from the melt while the crystal continues to be positioned inside the crucible in the zone wherein it was grown, and wherein final tempering of the crystal also takes place.</p>

<heading id="h0010">[Description of Embodiments]</heading>
<heading id="h0011">[First embodiment]</heading>
<heading id="h0012">[Single crystal phosphor]</heading>
<p id="p0011" num="0011">A single crystal phosphor in the first embodiment is a Ce-doped YAG-activated single crystal phosphor and has a composition represented by (Y1-a-bLuaCeb)3+cAl5-cO12 (where <b>0</b>≤a≤<b>0.9994</b>, <b>0.0002</b>≤b≤<b>0.0067</b>, <b>-0.016</b>≤c≤<b>0.315</b>). Here, Ce is substituted in the Y site and functions as an activator (becomes the light emission center). On the other hand, Lu is substituted in the Y site but does not function as an activator.</p>
<p id="p0012" num="0012">In the composition of the phosphor, some atoms may be in different positions in the crystal structure. In addition, although the composition ratio of O in the compositional formula is <b>12</b>, the above-mentioned composition also includes compositions with an O composition ratio slightly different from <b>12</b> due to presence of oxygen which is inevitably mixed or deficient. In addition, the value of c in the compositional formula is a value inevitably variable when manufacturing the single crystal phosphor, but variation within a range of<!-- EPO <DP n="7"> --> about <b>-0.016</b>≤c≤<b>0.315</b> have little effect on physical properties of the single crystal phosphor.</p>
<p id="p0013" num="0013">It is possible to obtain the single crystal phosphor in the first embodiment by, e.g., a liquid phase growth method such as CZ method (Czochralski method), EGF method (Edge Defined Film Fed Growth Method), Bridgman method, FZ method (Floating Zone method) or Verneuil method, etc. Ingots of single crystal phosphors obtained by such liquid phase growth methods are cut into flat plates or processed into powder, which are then available for manufacturing light-emitting devices described later.</p>
<p id="p0014" num="0014">The value of "b" indicating the Ce concentration in the above-mentioned compositional formula is in a range of <b>0.0002</b>≤a≤<b>0.0067</b> because when the value of b is smaller than <b>0.0002</b>, too low Ce concentration causes a decrease in absorption of excitation light and a resulting problem of an excessive decrease in external quantum efficiency and, when larger than <b>0.0067</b>, cracks or voids, etc., are highly likely to be generated during growth of an ingot of single crystal phosphor and thus cause a decrease in crystal quality.</p>
<heading id="h0013">[Manufacture of single crystal phosphor]</heading>
<p id="p0015" num="0015">A manufacturing method using the Czochralski process will be described below as an example of the method of manufacturing the single crystal phosphor in the present embodiment.</p>
<p id="p0016" num="0016">Firstly, Y2O3, Lu2O3, CeO2 and Al2O3 each in the form of powder having a high purity (not less than <b>99.99</b>%) are prepared as starting materials and are dry-blended, thereby obtaining a mixture powder. In this regard, powder raw-materials of Y, Lu, Ce and Al are not limited to the above mentioned materials. In addition, when manufacturing a single crystal phosphor not containing Lu, the powder raw-material thereof is not used.</p>
<p id="p0017" num="0017">Next, the obtained mixture powder is put in a crucible made of indium and the crucible is then placed in a ceramic cylindrical container. Then, a high frequency energy of <b>30</b> kW is supplied to the crucible by a high-frequency coil wound around the cylindrical container to<!-- EPO <DP n="8"> --> generate induced current, thereby heating the crucible. The mixture powder is melted and a melt thereof is thereby obtained.</p>
<p id="p0018" num="0018">Next, a seed crystal which is a YAG single crystal is prepared and, after bringing a tip thereof into contact with the melt, is pulled upward at a pulling speed of not more than <b>1</b> mm/h and rotated simultaneously at a rotation speed of <b>10</b> rpm at a temperature of not less than <b>1960</b>°C, thereby growing a single crystal phosphor ingot oriented to the &lt;<b>111</b>&gt; direction. The single crystal phosphor ingot is grown in a nitrogen atmosphere at atmospheric pressure in a state that nitrogen is being supplied at a flow rate of <b>2</b> L/min into the cylindrical container.</p>
<p id="p0019" num="0019">A single crystal phosphor ingot having, e.g., a diameter of about <b>2.5</b> cm and a length of about <b>5</b> cm is thereby obtained. By cutting the obtained single crystal phosphor ingot into a desired size, it is possible to obtain, e.g., a plate-shaped single crystal phosphor to be used in a light-emitting device. Or, by grinding the single crystal phosphor ingot, it is possible to obtain particles of single crystal phosphor.</p>
<heading id="h0014">[Evaluation of single crystal phosphor]</heading>
<p id="p0020" num="0020">Plural single crystal phosphors in the first embodiment which have different compositions were made. Then, analysis of the compositions and evaluations for CIE chromaticity and internal quantum efficiency were performed.</p>
<p id="p0021" num="0021">Composition analysis was performed using high-frequency inductively-coupled plasma (ICP) emission spectrometry. For analyzing the single crystal phosphors having an extremely low Ce concentration, ICP mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used in combination.</p>
<p id="p0022" num="0022">For evaluating CIE chromaticity coordinates, CIE <b>1931</b> color-matching functions were used to obtain the CIE chromaticity coordinates of the emission spectrum of the single crystal phosphors when the peak wavelength of the excitation light is <b>450</b> nm.</p>
<p id="p0023" num="0023"><!-- EPO <DP n="9"> --> The internal quantum efficiency was evaluated using a quantum efficiency measurement system having an integrating hemisphere unit. The following is a specific method of measuring the internal quantum efficiency of the single crystal phosphor.</p>
<p id="p0024" num="0024">Firstly, excitation light is irradiated onto barium sulfate powder provided as a standard sample and placed in the integrating hemisphere unit, and the excitation light spectrum is measured. Next, excitation light is irradiated onto the single crystal phosphor placed on the barium sulfate in the integrating hemisphere unit, and the excitation light reflection spectrum and the fluorescence spectrum are measured. Next, in the integrating hemisphere unit, the diffusely-reflected excitation light is irradiated onto the single crystal phosphor placed on the barium sulfate and the re-excitation fluorescence spectrum is measured.</p>
<p id="p0025" num="0025">Then, a difference between the number of photons obtained from the fluorescence spectrum and the number of photons obtained from the re-excitation fluorescence spectrum is divided by a difference between the number of photons obtained from the excitation light spectrum and the number of photons obtained from the excitation light reflection spectrum. The internal quantum efficiency is thereby obtained.</p>
<p id="p0026" num="0026">Table <b>1</b> below shows the results of evaluating the wavelength of fluorescence and the CIE chromaticity. In Table <b>1</b>, the samples No.<b>1</b> to No.<b>33</b> are samples of the single crystal phosphors in the present embodiment and the samples No.<b>34</b> to No.<b>36</b> are samples of Ce-activated YAG-based polycrystalline phosphor powder as Comparative Examples. Table 1 shows the values of a, b and c in the compositional formula of the single crystal phosphor in the present embodiment, the peak wavelengths λp (nm) of fluorescence when the peak wavelength of the excitation light is <b>440</b> nm, <b>450</b> nm and <b>460</b> nm, and the CIE chromaticity coordinates (x, y) when the peak wavelength of the excitation light is <b>440</b> nm, <b>450</b> nm and <b>460</b> nm.<!-- EPO <DP n="10"> -->

<p id="p0072" num="0072">Firstly, the Ce concentration and the thickness of the single crystal phosphor are adjusted so that the chromaticity coordinates of the emission light when combining the light-emitting element <b>100</b> and the single crystal phosphor <b>13</b> are located between the point Y<b>1</b> and the point Y<b>2</b> on the straight line L<b>2</b> in <figref idref="f0004"><b>FIG.5</b></figref>. <p id="p0073" num="0073">At this time, since the single crystal phosphor <b>13</b> and the reddish phosphor absorb fluorescence each other, the relation between the chromaticity R and the combined<!-- EPO <DP n="21"> --> chromaticity of the light-emitting element <b>100</b> and the single crystal phosphor <b>13</b> does not linearly vary with respect to the adjusted amount of the reddish phosphor, but the above-mentioned method allows white color roughly at an intended color temperature to be created.</p>
<p id="p0074" num="0074">Even if the value of a in the compositional formula of the single crystal phosphor <b>13</b> is changed, the chromaticity in the direction of the curved line L<b>2</b> hardly changes since Lu does not function as an activator. <p id="p0075" num="0075">In addition, even if the emission wavelength of the light-emitting element <b>100</b> or the emission wavelength of the reddish phosphor is changed, the chromaticity in the direction of the curved line L<b>2</b> hardly changes in the same manner. And, at least when the peak emission wavelength of the light-emitting element <b>100</b> is in a range of <b>430</b> to <b>480</b> nm and the peak emission wavelength of the reddish phosphor is in a range of <b>600</b> to <b>660</b> nm, adjusting the amount of the reddish phosphor allows white light with a color temperature of <b>2700</b> to <b>6500</b>K to be created in the same manner.</p>
<p id="p0076" num="0076">The following simulation was performed to demonstrate that light emitted from the light-emitting device <b>10</b> in the second embodiment is excellent in color rendering properties. <p id="p0079" num="0079">Firstly, given that the emission spectrum of the light-emitting device <b>10</b> can approximate to the synthetic emission spectrum of the light-emitting element <b>100</b>, the single crystal phosphor <b>13</b> and the reddish phosphor, the fundamental spectra of the light-emitting element <b>100</b>, the single crystal phosphor <b>13</b> and the reddish phosphor are fitted to a spectrum having a chromaticity corresponding to the color temperature of <b>3000</b>K by the least-squares method, and a linear coupling coefficient of each fundamental spectrum was determined.</p>
<p id="p0080" num="0080">Then, an average color rendering index Ra is calculated from the synthetic spectrum obtained by the data fitting.
