(54) HOLDING SEAL MATERIAL, PRODUCTION METHOD FOR HOLDING SEAL MATERIAL, AND EXHAUST GAS PURIFICATION DEVICE


(57) The holding sealing material of the present invention is a holding sealing material including coated fibers including inorganic fibers having a surface coated with a binder layer, wherein the binder layer contains an organic binder and an inorganic binder, and the coefficient of coated fiber diameter variation d of the coated fibers is 25% or less as measured using an image taken with a scanning electron microscope at a magnification of 1000 times and expressed by the following formula (1):

where d is the coefficient of coated fiber diameter variation of the coated fibers, Dmax is the average maximum diameter of the coated fibers, Dmin is the average minimum diameter of the coated fibers, and D is a reference diameter that is the average of the average maximum diameter Dmax and the average minimum diameter Dmin.
