[0001] The present invention concerns a brazier or crucible for a pellet heating apparatus,
preferably for a pellet stove, allowing to clean a significant portion of the brazier
affected by the presence of combustion residues by means of rotation of the relative
bottom and simultaneously obtaining at least a certain side air inflow in the brazier,
consistent with a partially pyrolytic combustion. The brazier according to the present
invention is also suitable to channel said flow and orient it properly for this purpose.
[0002] Currently there are braziers having bottom portions, which may be subject to rotation
to the end of the discard of the combustion residues. These braziers, however, present
other areas affected by the presence of combustion residues (for example, areas belonging
to the combustion surface), but which are not cleaned by means of this rotation, because
they remain stationary.
[0003] The object of the present invention is to devise a self-cleaning brazier for a pellet
heating apparatus allowing for quick and convenient cleaning of a greater part of
the areas of the brazier affected by the presence of such residues compared to currently
known systems.
[0004] The known self-cleaning braziers do not allow to obtain a partially pyrolytic combustion
in the sense referred to above, because of the arrangement of the movable parts with
respect to the brazier portions that remain stationary during cleaning of the same.
In fact, this arrangement creates ventilation gaps or passages through the brazier
bottom, which, when in use, allow a great oxygen inflow at the heart of the combustion
area.
[0005] Another object of the present invention is to devise a self-cleaning brazier for
a pellet heating apparatus allowing for quick and convenient cleaning of a greater
part of the areas of the brazier affected by the presence of such residues compared
to currently known systems and allowing to obtain a more pyrolytic combustion compared
to known systems.
[0006] In addition, inside the crucible or brazier of pellet stoves, given the high temperatures,
clinker is easily formed resulting from the aggregation of mineral salts contained
in the pellets. The clinker may pose issues related to the passage sections, allowing
air inflow in the containment volume of the fuel, which in this case is precisely
the pellet.
[0007] Another object of the present invention is to devise a self-cleaning brazier for
a pellet heating apparatus allowing for quick and convenient cleaning of a greater
part of the areas of the brazier affected by the presence of such residues compared
to currently known systems and allowing to obtain a more pyrolytic combustion compared
to known systems, and also allowing to remove any clinker formed on air passage sections.
[0008] Another object of the present invention is to devise a self-cleaning brazier, which
is compact and not bulky.
[0009] One or more of the above objects are achieved by means of a self-cleaning brazier
for a pellet heating apparatus preferably for pellet stoves, in accordance with the
present invention, as specified in the attached claims and/or having at least one
of the following features, which can be in turn combined with these claims.
[0010] In a first aspect, the invention relates, as per claim 1, to a self-cleaning brazier
for a pellet heating apparatus, preferably for pellet stoves, comprising a containment
body and a bottom rotating with respect to said containment body about an axis of
rotation, in a configuration of cleaning of said brazier, to discard the combustion
residues,
wherein, in a configuration of combustion of said brazier, said bottom defines at
least a lower surface of a containment volume, suitable to receive an at least partially
solid fuel, and said containment body defines at least partially a side surface of
the same containment volume,
wherein said brazier comprises at least a first pair and a second pair each of which
comprising a protuberance belonging to said bottom, and a recess belonging to said
containment body and at least partially counter-shaped to said protuberance,
wherein, in said configuration of combustion of the brazier, the protuberance of each
of said pairs extends along said side surface and the respective recess of each of
said pairs is positioned at said side surface, so that said protuberance may be received
in said respective recess,
and wherein, in said configuration of combustion of the brazier, said first pair defines
a first air passage section, and said second pair defines a second air passage section,
said first passage section and second passage section being positioned at said side
surface and by mutually opposing parts of said axis of rotation, respectively.
[0011] A possible embodiment of a brazier according to the present invention may comprise
at least one of the following technical aspects.
[0012] Preferably, the brazier comprises a first plurality of pairs arranged along a first
side of said bottom and comprises said first pair, and a second plurality of pairs
arranged along a second side of said bottom, opposite to said first side and comprises
said second pair.
[0013] Preferably, the first plurality of pairs and the second plurality of pairs each comprise
a number of pairs greater than or equal to three and/or less than or equal to fifteen,
more preferably less than or equal to twelve, for example four.
[0014] Preferably, each of said pairs belonging to said pluralities of pairs comprises a
respective protuberance belonging to said bottom and a respective recess belonging
to said containment body and at least partially counter-shaped to said protuberance.
[0015] Preferably, in the configuration of combustion of the brazier, the protuberance of
each of said pairs belonging to said first plurality and second plurality of pairs
extends along said side surface and the respective recess of each of said pairs is
positioned at said side surface, so that said protuberance may be received in said
respective recess.
[0016] Preferably, in the configuration of combustion of the brazier, said first plurality
of pairs defines a first plurality of respective passage sections and said second
plurality of pairs defines a second plurality of respective passage sections.
[0017] Preferably, the first plurality of passage sections and the second plurality of passage
sections are positioned in correspondence with said side surface and respectively
by mutually opposing sides of said axis of rotation. The presence of more pluralities
of passage sections on opposite sides of the bottom guarantees a proper air inflow
and still allows to obtain a partially pyrolytic combustion, because of the positioning
of the air inlets at opposite passage sections and located on mutually opposite faces
of the side surface of the containment volume.
[0018] Preferably, in the configuration of combustion of the self-cleaning brazier, the
protuberance of each of said pairs extend from said lower surface of the containment
volume, and preferably from a lateral edge of the bottom, said protuberance being
oriented towards an upper opening of the containment volume and transversely to said
lower surface.
[0019] Preferably, the respective recess of each of said pairs is formed at a lower edge
of said containment body and, in this configuration of combustion of the brazier,
it develops entirely between said lower surface and upper opening, preferably with
exclusion of said lower surface.
[0020] In this way, the entire bottom surface is movable thanks to the degree of freedom
of rotation of the bottom relative to the containment body, and simultaneously the
same protuberances which define the air passage can effectively jut out from the bottom
itself so as to have a cleaning effect on the same passage sections during this rotation.
In fact, the rotation of the bottom makes sure that the protuberances, moving in their
respective recesses, can clean the air passage sections, which may be especially subject
to clinker issues.
[0021] Preferably, between said lower edge of the containment body and said bottom, at least
one air passage opening is defined, which extends at least partially along at least
one portion of the perimeter of said lower surface.
[0022] Preferably, said at least one opening is positioned along at least one of said first
and second side of said bottom and is interposed between at least two passage sections
belonging to at least one of said first plurality of passage section and said second
plurality of passage sections. This opening serves to facilitate the relative movement
of the bottom and of the containment body and simplifies the construction of the containment
body itself, besides ensuring a certain air inflow always from a perimeter-side area
of the fuel containment volume.
[0023] Preferably, at least two of said pairs defining two respective passage sections,
placed by mutually opposite parts of said axis of rotation, are configured so that
the protuberance of one of said at least two pairs is suitable to cross the recess
of the other of said at least two pairs, following the rotation, of at least 180 degrees,
of said bottom around said axis of rotation and with respect to said containment body.
In this way the rotation of the bottom is particularly useful in order to overcome
the clinker issues, because the protuberances are also adapted to clean up the combustion
residues attached to the recesses defining the respectively opposite passage sections.
[0024] Preferably, the bottom is secured to said containment body by fastening means configured
to allow the rotation of said bottom relative to said containment body so that said
axis of rotation is parallel to said lower surface of the containment volume and preferably
passing through said base.
[0025] In this way, the overall dimensions of the brazier are optimized in that the bottom
substantially rotates about itself, and the distance between the bottom surface of
the containment volume and the axis of rotation can be remarkably reduced. Preferably,
a distance between said axis of rotation and said lower surface is less than or equal
to 5 cm, more preferably less than or equal to 2 cm.
[0026] Preferably, the fastening means comprise a pin integral with said bottom and a recess
formed in the containment body, or vice versa, said pin being suitable for engaging
in said recess.
[0027] Preferably, the fastening means comprise a first removable means of connection suitable
to fix a plate for closing said recess.
[0028] Preferably, the rotation of the bottom relative to the containment body can reach
at least 180 degrees, and preferably at least 360 degrees.
[0029] In this way, the quantity of discard residues is increased.
[0030] Preferably, in this configuration of combustion of the brazier, the containment body
and/or the containment volume and/or the bottom and/or the entire brazier are symmetrical
with respect to a first plane of symmetry passing through said axis of rotation.
[0031] Preferably, the first plane of symmetry is perpendicular to a plane interpolating
the lower surface of the containment volume.
[0032] Preferably, in this configuration of combustion of the brazier, said first pair/first
plurality of pairs and second pair/second plurality of pairs are symmetrical with
respect to the first plane of symmetry.
[0033] Preferably, in this configuration of combustion of the brazier, said first and second
plurality of pairs are symmetrical with respect to a second plane of symmetry perpendicular
to the axis of rotation.
[0034] Preferably, the bottom is devoid of through openings at least in the central area,
and more preferably is completely devoid of through openings. In this way, pyrolytic
combustion is favoured.
[0035] Preferably, between a lower edge of the containment body and a perimeter edge of
said bottom, an air passage is defined, comprising said air passage sections and said
above-mentioned air passage opening(s), said passage continuously developing along
the whole perimeter edge of the bottom, with the exception of, at least, the portions
at the axis of rotation. In this way, pyrolytic combustion is favoured thanks to the
perimeter arrangement of such passage.
[0036] Preferably, the bottom and/or the containment body are each a single piece, more
preferably in cast iron.
[0037] In a second aspect, the invention relates to a pellet heating apparatus, for example
a thermo-stove or an insert or a boiler, preferably a pellet stove, containing the
self-cleaning brazier having at least one of these features or any combination of
these features.
[0038] The features of the present invention will be clarified by reading the following
detailed description of an embodiment thereof provided by way of illustration, and
not limitation, of the more general claimed concepts.
[0039] The following detailed description refers to the accompanying drawings, wherein
- figure 1 is a schematic view of this embodiment of the present invention;
- figure 2 is an exploded view of this embodiment;
- figure 3 is a side view of this embodiment;
- figure 4 is a bottom view of this embodiment;
- figure 5 is a top view of this embodiment.
[0040] Figure 1 shows a self-cleaning brazier 1, preferably for pellet stoves, comprising
a containment body 2 and a bottom 3. The bottom 3 is adapted to rotate with respect
to said containment body 2 around an axis of rotation R, for discard of combustion
residues. When the bottom 3 rotates with respect to the containment body 2, the brazier
1 assumes a cleaning configuration, which is not shown in the figures.
[0041] All the attached figures refer instead to a configuration of combustion of the same
self-cleaning brazier 1.
[0042] When the brazier 1 assumes said configuration of combustion, the bottom 3 defines
at least a lower surface F of a containment volume V. The containment volume V is
adapted to receive at least partially solid fuel. In this configuration of the combustion
brazier 1, the containment body 2 defines at least partially a side surface L of the
same containment volume V.
[0043] The direction C, shown in Figures 1, 3, 4 and 5, perpendicular to the axis of rotation
R, refers to a possible condition of use of the same brazier 1, when the same is in
such configuration of combustion. In such a condition of use, it is expected that
the bottom 3 is suitable for supporting the solid fuel, such as the pellet, and the
direction C is prepared according to the vertical, preferably parallel to gravity.
[0044] This direction C is also practically perpendicular to a plane interpolating the lower
surface F of the containment volume V, and substantially to the lower surface F of
the containment volume V.
[0045] According to the embodiment referred to in the enclosed figures, the lower surface
F of the containment volume V is defined by the upper surface of the bottom 3, said
upper surface being opposite to a lower surface S of the bottom 3 itself. The upper
surface of the bottom 3 is not shown in the accompanying figures, in so far as practically
coincident, in this embodiment, with the lower surface F of the containment volume
V. This lower surface S of the bottom 3 is visible only in figure 4 and, in profile,
in figure 3.
[0046] The lower surface F of the containment volume V extends transversally to the direction
C, in the configuration of combustion of the brazier 1 and in the condition of use
of the figures. The side surface L of the containment volume V, always in this possible
condition of use, is directed toward that direction C and virtually extends around
this direction C.
[0047] Preferably, the bottom 3 is devoid of through openings at least in its central area,
and more preferably is completely devoid of through openings.
[0048] In the embodiment shown, the bottom 3 substantially extends along said lower surface
F of the containment volume V, and, at least in correspondence with said lower surface
F, is devoid of openings or holes or air passage means, in order to make sure that
the combustion is partially pyrolytic.
[0049] The brazier 1 comprises at least one first pair and one second pair. Such at least
one first pair comprises a protuberance 4a belonging to said bottom 3 and a recess
5a belonging to the containment body 2. Such at least one second pair comprises a
protuberance 4b belonging to said bottom 3 and a recess 5b belonging to the containment
body 2.
[0050] A protuberance 4b of a second pair is visible in figures 2 and 3, while in figure
3 no protuberance 4a is visible, as it is covered by a respective protuberance 4b
[0051] A recess 5a is at least partly counter-shaped and associated with the respective
protuberance 4a, and a recess 5b is at least partly counter-shaped and associated
with the respective protuberance 4b.
[0052] In the configuration of combustion of the brazier 1, the protuberance 4a or 4b of
each of said pairs extends along said side surface L. The respective recess 5a or
5b of each of said pairs is positioned at said side surface L, so that said protuberance
4a or 4b may be received in said respective recess 5a or 5b.
[0053] With reference to figures 1 and 2, in correspondence of the side surface L of the
containment volume V, there is a hole 11 for the insertion of a pellet ignition resistance,
or in any case of any means of ignition of the pellets. This ignition hole 11 contributes
to combustion air inflow, more preferably within the limits of a partially pyrolytic
combustion.
[0054] In the example of the figures, there are more protuberances 4a on one side of the
bottom 3 corresponding to a first side 3a, and more protuberances 4b on an opposite
side of the bottom 3 corresponding to a second side 3b opposite the first side 3a.
In the example of the figures, there are more recesses 5a on one side of the bottom
3 corresponding to a first side 3a, and more recesses 5b on an opposite side of the
bottom 3 corresponding to a second side 3b opposite the first side 3a.
[0055] In the configuration of combustion of the brazier 1, any of the first pairs each
comprising one protuberance 4a and one recess 5a defines a first air passage section
6a. In the configuration of combustion of the brazier 1, any of the second pairs each
comprising one protuberance 4b and one recess 5b defines a second air passage section
6b. Any first passage section 6a and any second passage section 6b are placed at the
side surface L of the containment volume V and respectively by mutually opposite parts
of the bottom 3 and/or of the axis of rotation R.
[0056] Virtually any of the first pairs each comprising a protuberance 4a and a recess 5a
is located on one side of a centre plane of the bottom 3, said plane containing the
axis of rotation R. Any of the second pairs, each comprising a protuberance 4b and
a recess 5b, is located on the opposite side of said centre plane. In the embodiment
shown, such centre plane coincides with a first plane of symmetry of the whole brazier
1. Such first plane of symmetry may also be of the single containment body 2 and/or
of the single bottom 3 and/or of the containment volume V. This first plane of symmetry
is not shown in the attached figures, but can be considered parallel to the plane
of figure 3 and passing through the axis of rotation R.
[0057] Furthermore, in the embodiment shown, such pairs and the respective passage sections
are symmetric, in the configuration of combustion of the brazier 1, also with respect
to a second plane of symmetry, not shown, but which can be considered perpendicular
to the plane of figure 3 and perpendicular to the axis of rotation R.
[0058] Any first pair comprising a protuberance 4a and a recess 5a and any second pair comprising
a protuberance 4b and a recess 5b are then located respectively by mutually opposing
parts of the axis of rotation R.
[0059] Thus, in the embodiment shown of the brazier 1, the same comprises a first plurality
of pairs, which is disposed along a first side 3a of said bottom 3, which includes
more first pairs in turn comprising each a protuberance 4a and a recess 5a.
[0060] In the embodiment shown of the brazier 1, the same comprises a second plurality of
pairs which is disposed along a first side 3b of said bottom 3, opposed to said first
side 3a and including more second pairs in turn comprising each a protuberance 4b
and a recess 5b.
[0061] The protuberance 4a or 4b of each of said pairs belongs to the bottom 3, and the
respective recess 5a or 5b belongs to said containment body 2. Such recess 5a or 5b
is at least partly counter-shaped to said protuberance 4a or 4b.
[0062] In the configuration of combustion of the brazier 1, the protuberance 4a or 4b of
each of said pairs extends along the side surface L. The respective recess 5a or 5b
of each of said pairs is positioned at said side surface L, so that said protuberance
4a or 4b may be received in said respective recess 5a or 5b.
[0063] In the configuration of combustion of the brazier 1, the first plurality of pairs,
situated along the side 3a of the bottom 3, defines a first plurality of respective
sections of passage 6a. The second plurality of pairs, situated along the side 3b
of the bottom 3, defines a second plurality of respective passage sections 6b.
[0064] The first plurality of pairs and the second plurality of pairs are practically located
from mutually opposite parts of the bottom 3 and/or the axis of rotation R, and may
also each comprise a different number of pairs compared to that in the embodiment
shown.
[0065] The first plurality of passage sections 6a and the second plurality of passage sections
6b are positioned in correspondence with said side surface L and respectively by mutually
opposing parts of said bottom 3 and/or of said axis of rotation.
[0066] Figure 1 only shows passage sections 6a of the first plurality of passage sections,
while in figure 3, through the passage sections 6b of the second plurality, also the
corresponding passage sections 6a of the first plurality are visible. These passage
sections 6a of the first plurality of passage sections are in fact practically respectively
opposed to and/or facing the respective passage sections 6b of the second plurality.
[0067] In the configuration of combustion of the self-cleaning brazier 1, each of the protuberances
4a and 4b of said pairs preferably extends from said lower surface F and starting
preferably from a side edge of the bottom 3, and is oriented toward an upper opening
B of the containment volume V. Each of these protuberances 4a and 4b advantageously
extend transversely to the lower surface F of the containment volume V. In addition,
advantageously, the respective recess 5a or 5b of each of said pairs is formed at
a lower edge 8 of said containment body 2 and is situated entirely between the lower
surface F of the containment volume V and said upper opening B. Preferably, each recess
5a or 5b does not extend over any part of the lower surface F of the containment volume
V.
[0068] In the embodiment shown, between the lower edge 8 of the containment body 2 and said
bottom 3, at least one further air passage opening 7 is defined, which extends at
least partially along at least one portion of the perimeter of said lower surface
F.
[0069] Said at least one opening 7 is advantageously located along at least one of said
opposite sides 3a and 3b of said bottom 3, and then cooperates with the sections of
the air passage 6a or 6b for air to pass through, preferably in such a way as to still
maintain a partially pyrolytic combustion.
[0070] Figure 1 shows more openings 7 interposed between at least two passage sections 6a
and located along the first side 3a. In this embodiment there are respective openings
7 located at the 3b side and facing those situated along the first side 3a, as shown
in figure 3. In the latter figure, it is to be noted that such openings 7 from the
side 3b are interposed between the passage sections 6b.
[0071] In this embodiment, advantageously, there are openings, which are not indicated also
along the sides of the bottom 3, transverse to sides 3a and 3b, which are also defined
between the containment body 2 and the bottom 3, and preferably between a lower edge
8 of the containment body 2 and the bottom 3.
[0072] Practically, the openings 7 are interstices between an edge 8 of the containment
body 2 and an edge of the bottom 3, and allow air inflow also by a perimeter portion
of the lower surface F of the containment volume 2. Preferably, air inflow through
the part of the bottom 3 defining the lower surface F of the containment volume V
is completely inhibited, as such part of the bottom 3 has no holes or openings or
other air passage means.
[0073] In the embodiment shown, at least two of said pairs defining two respective passage
sections 6a and 6b, placed by mutually opposite parts of said axis of rotation R,
are configured so that the protuberance 4a of one of said at least two pairs is suitable
to cross the recess 5b of the other of said at least two pairs, following the rotation,
of at least 180 degrees, of said bottom 3 around said axis of rotation R and with
respect to said containment body 2.
[0074] In this sense, if we consider, in the figures, a first pair comprising a protuberance
4a and a recess 5a placed on the side of the first side 3a of the bottom 3 and defining
the passage section 6a, the same first pair is configured so that, following the rotation
of the bottom 3 relative to the containment body 2 preferably of at least 180 degrees,
the same protuberance 4a passes through the recess 5b which defines the opposite passage
section 6b, thus placed on the side of the second side 3b of said bottom 3, which
it is opposite to the first side 3a.
[0075] Preferably, in this configuration of combustion of the brazier 1, the containment
body 2 and/or the containment volume V and/or the entire brazier 1 are symmetrical
with respect to said first plane of symmetry on which said axis of rotation R lies.
[0076] Preferably, the first plane of symmetry is perpendicular to a plane interpolating
the lower surface F of the containment volume V.
[0077] Preferably, in this configuration of combustion of the brazier 1, said first plurality
of pairs and said second plurality of pairs are symmetrical with respect to the first
plane of symmetry.
[0078] Preferably, the bottom 3 is devoid of through openings at least in the central area,
and more preferably is completely devoid of through openings. In this way, pyrolytic
combustion is favoured.
[0079] In this embodiment as shown in the figures, between said containment body 2 and said
bottom 3 an air passage is then defined, comprising the above-mentioned air passage
sections 6a and 6b and the above-mentioned opening(s) 7 . Such passage extends virtually
continuously along substantially the entire peripheral edge of the bottom 3, preferably
with the exception of at least the portions at the axis of rotation.
[0080] In this embodiment, this step is defined between a lower edge 8 of the containment
body 2 and a peripheral edge of the bottom 3.
[0081] In the embodiment shown, the bottom 3 is rigidly coupled to said containment body
2 by fastening means 9 configured to allow the rotation of said bottom 3 with respect
to said containment body 2. In particular, the fastening means 9 of this embodiment
are such that said axis of rotation R is parallel to said lower surface F of the containment
volume, and is preferably passing through said bottom 3. Advantageously, the fastening
means 9 comprise a pin 9a integral to said bottom 3 and a recess 9b formed in the
containment body 2, or vice versa. The pin 9a is suitable for engaging in said recess
9b.
[0082] The fastening means 9 preferably comprise a first removable means of connection 9c
suitable to fix a plate 9d for closing said recess 9b.
[0083] The rotation of the bottom 3 with respect to the containment body 2 can reach at
least 180 degrees, and preferably at least 360 degrees, to increase the time during
which the residues can be separated from the bottom 3 itself, and to enhance the effect
of the fall of the same residues.
[0084] Also a rotation of 360 degrees ensures that every passage section 6a or 6b is cleaned
by the protrusion 4a or 4b corresponding to it or from that corresponding to the opposite
section 6b or 6a, during a number of distinct steps that may reach the number of three
for a complete rotation of the bottom 3.
[0085] The brazier 1 is also advantageously associated with movement means 10 of the bottom
3, which comprise a shaft 10a arranged along the axis of rotation R. Such shaft 10a
engages in a hole of the bottom 3 by means of a removable connection means 10b that
fits into a transverse hole 10c of the same shaft 10a.
[0086] The invention attains the intended purposes. In particular, it allows obtaining a
partially pyrolytic combustion thanks to the absence of air passages in the part of
the bottom 3 to define the lower surface F of the containment volume V, and then in
the part that holds the fuel.
[0087] At the same time, the present invention enables a quick cleaning, which can also
be automated in a simple way, and allows to clean a very significant portion of the
surface of the brazier 1 on which combustion residues remain, since the entire portion
of the bottom of the brazier 1 can be rotated with respect to the lateral portion.

is positioned at said side surface (L), so that said protuberance (4a, 4b) may be
received in said respective recess (5a, 5b),
and wherein, in said configuration of combustion of the brazier (1), said first plurality
