BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Field of the Invention
[0002] The present invention relates to a prefabricated retaining wall block, and more particularly,
to a prefabricated retaining wall block having an improved structure to allow more
strong and rapid construction of the retaining wall by assembling block units with
an improved engagement manner to enhance cohesion force, and a method for constructing
the retaining wall using the retaining wall block.
Description of the Related Art
[0003] In general, the retaining wall refers to a permanent soil retaining structures constructed
in a filling region, and the retaining wall is constructed for the purpose for preventing
a loss of the sediment in a filling area, a cutting area or a seawall, to prevent
a collapse.
[0004] Conventionally, although such a retaining wall construction was constructed by placing
the reinforced concrete, recently, for simplicity of construction, the retaining wall
construction has been widely constructed in a road embankment part construction, a
construction for ensuring stability of a inclined surface, a bridge abutment wing
wall construction, and other waterway and embankment construction by a masonry construction
using the block.
[0005] As examples of the retaining wall block,
Korean Registered Patent No. 10-0752078 (registered on August 20, 2007) discloses a retaining wall which is coupled and fixed to fixing holes formed on
both sides of the block and a fixing hole of another block using a fixing pin, the
fixing pin being formed with a head portion at a top and a body portion at a bottom,
and the retaining wall being constructed and coupled by fitting and coupling the body
portion and the head portion of the fixing pin to the fixing hole of the block and
the fixing hole of another block. The masonry type block of this type is also disclosed
in
EP Patent No. 1648609.
[0006] In addition, when connecting the retaining wall by the prefabricated retaining wall
block as described above, as an example of installing and constructing a geo-grid
commonly used to increase the resistance to soil pressure on a rear side of the retaining
wall,
Korean Registered Patent No. 10- 0,505,127 (registered on July 22, 2005) discloses a reinforced soil retaining wall assembly that includes a geo-grid that
is installed between the retaining wall blocks laminated by connecting a plurality
of horizontal rods and vertical rods to form oval fastening holes to generate frictional
force, a pulling resistance and a shear stress.
[0007] However, the above-described conventional patent has a structure that fixes the geo-grid,
by placing a fixing rod around which the end portion of the geo-grid is wound on the
groove formed on the upper surface of the block and by connecting other blocks thereon
to fix the geo-grid, there has been a problem in which the construction period of
the retaining becomes longer, and when the fixing rod is corroded, there has been
a problem in which it cannot be fixed to the geo-grid in a wedge-type.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

the rigidity required for the retaining wall, depending on the retaining wall construction
environments.
[0011] Still another object of the present invention is directed to provide a retaining
wall block with improved construction efficiency that can more rigidly construct the
retaining wall, using the above-mentioned retaining wall block.
[0012] In order to achieve the above-described object, according to the present invention,
there is provided a retaining wall constructing block provided with a coupling protrusion
and a coupling groove on a side surface, wherein in one side portion of a retaining
wall constructing first block unit, a first protrusion and a second protrusion are
formed to be inclined with respect to the front as a engaging structure, a coupling
groove is formed therebetween by the first and second protrusions, the first and second
protrusions of point-symmetrical shape and the coupling grooves formed therebetween
are formed to be vertically engaged with the first and second protrusions and the
coupling grooves of the one side portion to construct the retaining wall.
[0013] In the first block unit, the shapes of the first protrusion, the inclined surface,
the groove and the coupling groove of the one side portion are repeatedly formed at
positions rotated at a predetermined angle, the inclined surface, the groove, the
coupling groove and the second protrusion corresponding to the inclined surface connected
to the second protrusion are formed on a rear side, the protrusion, the coupling groove,
the first protrusion and the groove corresponding to the second protrusion may be

[0014] Further, on the upper surface of the first block unit, a protrusion is formed in
a horizontal direction, a concave groove is formed on a bottom surface corresponding
thereto, the protrusion and the concave groove of the first block units vertically
adjacent to each other, and the retaining wall reinforcing geo-grid installed between
the upper and lower first block units may be fixed by engagement of the concave grooves
of the bottom surface of the adjacent block units of the protrusion.
[0015] On the upper surface of the first block unit, vertical concave grooves spaced apart
from each other and a horizontal concave groove located therebetween may be formed
to fix the retaining wall reinforcing wire grid.
[0016] The retaining wall constructing block further includes a second block unit in which
the inclined surface, the groove, the first protrusion, the second protrusion formed
at the end portion of the inclined surface by the same shape and arrangement as the
groove, the first protrusion, the coupling groove and the second protrusion formed
on one side of the first block unit, and the shape and the arrangement configuration
of the formed coupling groove are further repeatedly formed at the rear, the same
structure as the shape of one side is also point-symmetrically formed on the other
side and can be coupled to the first block unit; and a third block unit in which the
same engaging structure of both side portions as the first block unit are formed on

the coupling groove and the grooves of one side portion of the first block unit are
engaged with the inclined coupling groove, the first protrusion, the second protrusion
and the groove of the adjacent other side portion.
[0018] The second block unit may be vertically disposed on at least one side of the at least
one first block unit, and the engaging structures of both side portions may be constructed
by being coupled to the first block unit.
[0019] Furthermore, the geo-grid is disposed between the constructed upper and lower block
units to extend rearward, and the geo-grid may be installed and fixed to be engaged
between the horizontal protrusion formed on the upper surface of the lower first block
unit and the bottom surface of the upper first block unit.
[0020] When installing the retaining wall, to enhance the soil pressure support force at
a preset position behind the retaining wall center, on both sides and rear surface
side of the first block, the first block unit and the second block unit may be assembled
in combination in a box shape.
[0021] Further, to construct a curved portion of the retaining wall, a plurality of third
block units may be consecutively assembled to the side portion of the first block
unit so that a coupling angle between the first and second protrusions and the coupling
groove are displaced at a preset angle.
[0022] When constructing the retaining wall, the block units having the different heights
may be assembled to be adjacent to each other to have a lateral support force so that
the upper block unit and the lower block unit prevent an occurrence of horizontal
slippage.
[0023] According to the present invention, the first, second and third block units are formed
in the engaging structure, the block units are vertically assembled and fixed to be
engaged with each other, it is possible to rigidly construct the retaining wall even
without a fixing means or a connecting means, and the retaining wall can be simply
constructed, and there is an effect of improvement in working efficiency.
[0024] Also, there is an effect capable of freely constructing the curved portion of the
retaining wall by combining the block units according to the present invention.
[0025] Furthermore, a reinforcing means such as a conventional geo-grid can be simply fixed
by the engagement coupling between the upper and lower block units, even without an
additional fixing means.
[0026] By assembling and constructing the blocking units with the heights different from
each other, there is an effect capable of enhancing the support force of the lateral
displacement in the retaining wall.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EXEMPLARY EMBODIMENTS
[0028] Exemplary embodiments of the present invention will be described below in detail
with reference to the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference
numerals will be used to refer to the same elements throughout the specification,
and a duplicated description thereof will be omitted. It will be understood that although
the terms "first", "second", etc. are used herein to describe various elements, these
elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish
one element from another element.
[0029] Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in more detail with reference
to the accompanying drawings illustrating the embodiment of the present invention.
[0030] In FIGS. 1 to 3, in a first block unit 100 for retaining wall construction according
to the present invention, in a one side portion, as an engaging structure, engaging
structures are formed at both side portions on a front surface forming the retaining
wall front surface, a first protrusion 1 and a second protrusion 2 are formed in one
side portion in a direction inclined to the front surface, and a coupling groove 3
is formed between the first and second protrusions 1 and 2. The shape of the coupling
groove 3 is the same as the cross-sectional shape of the first protrusion 1, which
allows the first protrusions of the adjacent block units to be vertically inserted
and assembled. The first protrusion 1 leads to an inclined surface toward the front
surface 5, and a groove 6 is formed with which the second protrusion 2 of the block
unit adjacent to the inclined surface 5 is engaged.
[0031] Further, a corresponding engaging structure capable of being coupled with the coupling
structure of the one side portion is formed on the other side portion of the first
block unit 100. That is, a first protrusions 11, a second protrusion 12 and a coupling
groove 13 therebetween are formed in a point symmetrical shape with the first protrusion
1, the second protrusions 2 and the coupling groove 3 described above.
[0032] In this structure, the first protrusion 1 of the other side portion of the block
unit 100' disposed adjacent in FIG. 6 is vertically fitted to the coupling groove
3 of one side portion of the first block unit 100, and meanwhile, the first protrusion
1 of one side portion of the first block unit 100 is vertically fitted to the coupling
groove 13 of the other side portion of the adjacent first block unit 100' and is coupled
by engagement. At this time, the second protrusion 12 of the other side portion of
the adjacent first block unit 100' is engaged with the groove 6 formed in the inclined
surface 5 of one side portion of the first block unit 100. The second protrusion 12
of the other side portion is formed at the end portion of the inclined surface 15
inclined from the front surface, and an inclined surface 17 and a groove 18 are formed
at point symmetrical position in the same structure as the inclined surface 5 and
the groove 6 of one side portion of the first block unit 100.
[0033] The inclined surface 5 of the one side portion and the inclined surface 17 of the
other side portion are parallel to each other.
[0034] The first protrusion 1 and the second protrusion 2 are formed to be arranged at 90°
in the embodiment illustrated in the drawings so that they are inclined at a predetermined
angle relative to each other, and the inclined surfaces 5 and 15 are formed so as
to be inclined to the front face of the block unit. The inclined surface 5 having
the first protrusion 1 formed on the end portion is formed parallel to the inclined
surface formed with the first protrusion 17 of the other side portion 11.
[0035] Thus, since the protrusions and the coupling grooves of the first block units 100
and 100' adjacent to each other are coupled by being fitted perpendicular to each
other, the block units coupled to each other cannot be relatively moved in the horizontal
direction and the front and back direction, rather than the vertical direction, and
thus, the engagement coupling between the block units is not released in the horizontal
direction.
[0036] Thus, the retaining wall can be rigidly constructed by engaging and coupling the
block units, even without using another connection means as in the prior art.
[0037] The shapes of the first protrusion 1, the inclined surface 5, the groove 6 and the
coupling groove 3 of the block unit 100 are repeatedly formed at a position rotated
rearward at 90°, and an include surface 5' corresponding to the inclined surface 5,
a groove 6, a coupling groove 3' and a second protrusion 2' are formed on the rear
side followed by the second protrusion 2. Such an arrangement shape is similarly provided
on the other side portion of the opposite side, a protrusion 12' corresponding to
the second protrusion, a coupling groove 13', a first protrusion 11' and a groove
18 ' are formed at the rear side end portion of the inclined surface 17, and these
are connected to the second protrusions 2' by a plane. Thus, since the first block
unit and other block units to be described later can also be engaged and coupled with
each other on the rear surface side of the first block unit 100, it is possible to
construct a retaining wall by coupling the first block units in two or more rows if
necessary.
[0038] On the upper surface of the first block unit 100, protrusions 20 protruding upward
are formed on both end portions in the horizontal direction, a concave groove 22 having
the same depth as the protrusion 20 is formed at the bottom of a position corresponding
to the protrusion, a vertical concave groove 21 is formed on the top surface at a
spaced position, a horizontal concave groove 23 is formed between the end portions
of the two concave grooves 21, and thus, the wire grid can be locked and reinforced
between the spaced vertical concave grooves 21 and the rear part of the retaining
wall constructed in the central horizontal concave groove 23.
[0039] Thus, when vertically laminating the first block unit 100, the protrusions 20 of
the upper surface are coupled to the concave grooves 22 as illustrated in the bottom
view of FIG. 2 formed on the bottom surface of the upper adjacent block unit.
[0040] FIG. 4 illustrates a second block unit 200 that can be used by being coupled to the
side portion or the rear surface side of the first block unit 100.
[0041] The second block unit 200 has a structure in which the shapes on both sides of the
first block unit 100 are repeatedly formed to the rear part. That is, second block
unit 200 has an engaging structure in which the structure of the same shape and arrangement
as the shapes of the groove 6, the first protrusion 1, the coupling groove 3, the
second protrusion 2, the inclined surface 5', the groove 6', the first protrusions
1' and the coupling groove 3' of the inclined surface 5 formed on one side of the
first block unit 100, that is, on the left side are similarly and repeatedly formed
on the right side of the second block unit 200 at regular intervals.
[0042] That is, on one side of the second block unit 200, that is a right side, an inclined
surface 205, a groove 206 formed thereon, a first protrusion 201 formed at the end
portion of the inclined surface 206, a coupling groove 203 formed adjacent to the
first protrusion, a second protrusion 202 and the shape and the arrangement of the
inclined surface, the groove, the first protrusion, the coupling groove and the second
protrusion are similarly and repeatedly formed to be spaced apart from them at a predetermined
interval
[0043] Further, on the other side of the second block unit 200, i.e., on the left side,
an engaging structure is included in which the same arrangement shape as the inclined
surface 15, the second protrusion 12, the coupling groove 13, the first protrusion
11, the inclined surface 17, the groove 18 and the second protrusion 12' of the left
portion of the first block unit 100 is formed so as to be repeated backward at regular
intervals
[0044] As a result, on the right side of the second block unit 200, each of the groove 206,
the first protrusion 206, the coupling groove 203 and the second protrusion 202 is
fitted to and engaged with each of the second protrusion 12, the coupling groove 13,
the first protrusion 11 and the groove 18 of the inclined surface 17 of the left side
in FIG. 1 of the first block unit 100 vertically downward. On the left side of the
second block unit 200, the right structure of another first block unit 100 is engaged
and assembled.
[0045] At least one through-hole 35 can be formed in the first and second block units.
[0047] Further, as illustrated in FIG. 5, the present invention may further include a third
block unit 300 that has a relatively reduced horizontal length, while having the same
engaging structure of both sides as the first block unit 100.
[0048] In the third block unit 300, the configurations of the groove 306, the first protrusion
301, the coupling groove 303 and second protrusion 302 of the inclined surface 305
on its one side portion, i.e., on the right side in the drawings, can be vertically
engaged with the first and second protrusions, the coupling groove and the groove
of the left side portion of the first and second block units in the point symmetrical
shape, and meanwhile, the left shape is in a shape which is capable of being engaged
with the right portions of the first and second block units and can be connected to
the first and the second block units.
[0049] By forming the first to third blocks units with the different heights, for example,
when locking and connecting the block units of the same height each other, in order
to prevent a situation in which the upper block unit may horizontally slip with respect
to the lower block unit, as illustrated in FIG. 12, when connecting the first block
units 100 and 500 formed to have the different heights, it is possible to prevent
a horizontal slippage by the adjacent block unit.
[0050] Hereinafter, a construction method of constructing the retaining wall, using the
first to third block units described above.
[0051] First, as illustrated in FIG. 6,
The other first block unit 100' is assembled in one or more lines in a manner of being
fitted downward from the top such that the first and second protrusions 1 and 2, the
coupling groove 3 and the groove 6 on one side of the first block unit 100 are engaged
with the coupling groove 13, the first protrusions 11, the second protrusion 12 and
the groove 18 on the other side portion of another adjacent first block unit 100'.
At this time, depending on the construction environments, another first block unit,
a second block unit or a third block unit may be assembled behind the first block
units 100 and 100' in the above-described engaging manner.
[0052] FIG. 7 is another embodiment, the second block unit 200 can be vertically placed
on either side of the first block unit 100, and the engaging structures of its both
side portions are coupled to further rigidly construct the retaining wall.
[0053] In the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 6 and 7, by installing a geo-grid 400 or a
wire grid 410 fixed to the rear side of the retaining wall between the constructed
upper and lower first block units 100 as illustrated in FIG. 8, it is possible to
increase the supporting force relative to the soil pressure of the constructed retaining
wall. At this time, when installing the geo-grid 400 to pass through the horizontal
protrusion 20 formed on the upper surface of the lower first block unit 100, and when
assembling another first block unit 100 thereon a concave groove of the bottom surface
22, while the protrusion 20 is fitted to the concave groove 22 of the bottom surface,
the geo-grid 400 is engaged between the protrusion 20 and the concave groove 22, the
geo-grid can be stably fixed by weight of the first block continuously connected upward,
even without a separate fixing means, and the retaining wall may support the soil
pressure by the friction between the geo-grid and the soil to enhance the soil pressure
support force of the retaining wall.
[0054] Also, in place of the geo-grid, the wire grid 410 may be locked through the vertical
concave grooves 21 and the central concave grooves 23 formed on the upper surface
of the first block unit 100 to be spaced apart from each other and may be fixed to
the retaining wall rear side to reinforce the retaining wall. At this time, the upper
surfaces of the concave grooves 21 and 23 are closed by the flat bottom surface portion
of another first block unit connected on the upper surface to prevent the wire grid
410 from being disengaged.
[0055] FIG. 9 illustrates a construction example with increased soil pressure support force
of the retaining wall only by the first block unit 100, or by assembling the first
block unit and the second the block units 200 into a box shape in combination, at
the time of installation of a retaining wall of a long section or when it is not possible
to install the geo-grid or the wire grid.
[0056] In FIG. 10, the curved portion of the retaining wall can be simply constructed by
sequentially assembling the plurality of third block units 300 at the side portion
of the first block unit 100, and in the illustrated embodiment, it is possible to
construct a retaining wall that is bent at 90° using the nine third block units 300.
The number of the third block units 300 can be changed depending on the inclination
angle of the first protrusion and the coupling groove formed adjacent thereto.
[0057] A finishing block and a corner finishing block disclosed in
Korean Registered Patent No. 10-1501930 registered by the applicant can also be used in combination for the first and the
second block units 100 and 200.
[0058] FIG. 11 illustrates an example of constructing the retaining wall in an S-shaped
curved surface by varying a coupling angle between the protrusions and the coupling
grooves of the third block units 300. In this way, since the block unit of the present
invention can freely construct the curved construction of the retaining wall, it is
possible to efficiently perform the construction work.
[0059] In FIG. 12, the block units according to the present invention are connected to one
another by making the heights different, for example, by mixing the first block unit
100 and a block unit 500 having a twice height thereof, the block units can be supported
each other in the horizontal direction. Thus, a slippage does not occur, and it is
possible to exhibit the same effect as a conventional displacement masonry system.
The third block unit 300 can be finished in the retaining wall side end portion.
[0060] By vertically fitting and coupling the block units by an engagement structure of
an inclined protrusion and a coupling groove, the block unit according to the present
invention has a greater support force to the soil pressure in the front and back direction
when the retaining wall is construction. In the case of the vertical displacement
due to local subsidence of the ground, although a vertical crack occurs in the conventional
retaining wall block at the time of ground subsidence to cause a collapse of the retaining
wall, in the coupling of the units of the present invention, since upper and lower
floating is allowable to some extent by the vertical engagement structure without
damage to the block unit, it is possible to accommodate the vertical displacement
due to slight ground subsidence usually generated after construction, and it is possible
to prevent the damage to the blocks and the collapse of the retaining wall.
[0061] The block units of the present invention can be used to rigidly and quickly construct
a retaining wall which prevents loss of sediment in an embankment, cutting area or
a seawall.
[0062] While the invention has been illustrated and described with reference to exemplary
embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various
changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit
and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. Therefore, the scope

upper and lower block units (100) to extend rearward, and the geo-grid (400) is installed
and fixed to be engaged between a horizontal protrusion (20) formed on the upper surface
of the lower first block unit (100) and a concave groove (22) formed on a lower surface
of the upper first block unit (100).
9. The method of claim 6, wherein when installing the retaining wall, to enhance the
soil pressure support force at a preset position behind the retaining wall center,
on both sides and a rear surface side of the first block (100), the first block unit
(100) and the second block unit (200) are assembled in combination in a box shape.
10. The method of claim 6, wherein to construct a curved portion of the retaining wall,
a plurality of third block units (300) is consecutively assembled to the side portion
of the first block unit (100) so that a coupling angle between the first and second
protrusions and the coupling groove are displaced at a preset angle.
11. The method of any one of claims 6 to 10, wherein when constructing the retaining wall,
the block units (100, 500) having the different heights are assembled to be adjacent
to each other to have a lateral support force so that the upper block unit and the
lower block unit prevent an occurrence of horizontal slippage.
