[0001] The present invention relates to a cabinet suspending device according to the preamble
of claim 1.
[0002] Cabinet suspending devices are used to ensure proper support and fixing of a piece
of furniture to a wall, be it an actual cabinet closed at the front by one or more
doors, an open cabinet or a shelf.
[0003] Cabinet suspending devices are intended to be fixed, built in or otherwise associated
with the structure of a piece of furniture, generally at the rear portion/wall of
the structure of the piece of furniture intended to be leant against a support wall.
[0004] Cabinet suspending devices must ensure a fast and stable attachment of the device
to a hook or a support rail previously fixed to a wall. In addition, it is also required
that the cabinet suspending devices are provided with adjustment means adapted to
allow the adjustment of the cabinet suspending device position, and thus of the piece
of furniture associated thereto, with respect to the hook or support rail both in
vertical direction, i.e. in height, and in a direction perpendicular to the wall itself,
i.e. away from or approaching such a wall.
[0005] As regards safety, the need to have a cabinet suspending device that can prevent
undesired release from the hook or from the support rail is nowadays very much felt,
particularly in case of a thrust acting on the piece of furniture from the bottom
upwards, without complicating the structure of the cabinet suspending device as well
as the hooking/release procedure to/from said hook or said support rail fixed to the
wall.
[0006] The problem underlying the present invention is to devise a cabinet suspending device
able to meet the above requirement while obviating the problems of the cabinet suspending
devices of the prior art.
[0007] Such a problem is solved by a cabinet suspending device according to claim 1.
[0008] According to a further aspect, such a problem is solved by a kit for attaching a
piece of furniture to a wall according to claim 14.
[0009] Further features and the advantages of the hinge for cabinets according to the present
invention will be apparent from the following description of some preferred embodiments

[0010] With reference to the accompanying figures, reference numerals 1 and 101 generally
indicate a first embodiment and a second embodiment of a cabinet suspending device
according to the invention.
[0011] The cabinet suspending device 1, 101 is intended to be applied to or integrated in
the structure of a piece of furniture 2 and to engage with removable coupling a support
rail 3 projecting from a wall for keeping the piece of furniture attached to the wall.
[0012] Said support rail 3 comprises an attachment portion 3a, intended to be attached to
the wall that must support the piece of furniture 2, and an upper hooking portion
3b which cantilevers from the attachment portion 3a to be engaged in a reversible
manner by the suspending device 1.
[0013] According to the illustrated embodiment, the above upper hooking portion 3b defines
the upper end portion of the support rail 3 when such a rail is attached to the wall.
[0014] The above hooking portion 3b of the support rail 3 comprises a hook-shaped end portion
to achieve a better engagement with the cabinet suspending device 1, 101.
[0015] The cabinet suspending device 1, 101 comprises
- a support structure 4 comprising a first side 10 intended to face towards the wall
that must support the piece of furniture 2 when the cabinet suspending device 1, 101
is in use (see figure 1 and figure 9);
- attaching means 8 for the reversible attachment of the cabinet suspending device 1,
101 to the structure of a piece of furniture 2 to be supported on the wall;
- hooking means 7 comprising a free hooking end 7a for the reversible attachment of
the cabinet suspending device 1, 101 to the upper hooking portion 3b of said support
rail 3;
- coupling means interposed between the hooking means 7 and the support structure 4
to allow the free hooking end 7a of the hooking means 7 to be adjustably moved towards
or away from said first side 10 of the support structure 4 to switch from a more rearward
projecting position with respect to the support structure 4 to a projecting position
more far away from the support structure 4, and vice versa,
- adjustment means 5 to adjust the distance of the free hooking end 7a of the hooking
means 7 towards or away with respect to the first side 10 of the support structure
4, and
- an inner seat 11 extending vertically in said free hooking end 7a of the hooking means
7 starting from a lower opening, to allow such an inner seat 11 to engage from above
an upper hooking portion 3b of a support rail 3 projecting from the above wall when
the cabinet suspending device is in use to attach the piece of furniture 2 to such
a wall (see figure 1).
[0016] According to the illustrated embodiment, the above support structure 4 is contained
in a box-shaped body 10 from the first side of which the free hooking end 7a of the
hooking means 7 protrudes.
[0017] The above coupling means interposed between the hooking means 7 and the support structure
4 are not illustrated in the figure for simplicity of representation. Preferably,
such coupling means provide for a series of horizontal guides formed inside the box-shaped
body 4 along which the hooking means 7 are guided in the longitudinal/horizontal direction
X-X like a slider, so that the free end 7a of the hooking means 7 slides to and from
the above projecting position more distanced from the support structure 4.
[0018] According to the illustrated embodiment, the above attaching means 8 are tabs projecting
from the box-shaped body of the support structure 4 for engaging corresponding holes
formed in the inner side of the walls of the piece of furniture 2. Alternatively,
it is possible to provide structurally and/or functionally different attaching means,
such as expansion bolts, screws, nuts, bolts, studs, pins and the like.
[0019] Advantageously, said hooking means 7 comprise a blocking tab 12 positioned in proximity
of said lower opening of said inner seat 11. Said blocking tab 12 allows:
- partially obstructing the lower opening of the inner seat 11, leaving only a restricted
passage free, and
- cooperating with the inner seat 11 in delimiting and defining a retaining seat in
the free end 7a of the hooking means 7 suitable for preventing the hooking means 7
from being vertically pulled out from the hooking portion 3b of the support rail 3
inserted in said retaining seat when the cabinet suspending device 1, 101 is in use.
[0020] Preferably, when the cabinet suspending device 1, 101 is in use, the above free passage
is positioned at the portion of the lower opening of the inner seat 11 that is most
distal from the support structure 4, i.e. at the portion of the lower opening of the
the inner seat 11 that is closest to the front side of the head end 7a and to the
wall when the cabinet suspending device 1, 101 is in use.
[0021] Preferably, said adjustment means for adjusting the distance of the free hooking
end 7a of the hooking means 7 towards or away from said first side 10 of the support
structure 4 comprise a longitudinal adjustment screw 5 extending longitudinally in
said support structure 4, said longitudinal adjustment screw 5 acting between the
support structure 4 and the hooking means 7.
[0022] Preferably, said longitudinal adjustment screw 5 is accessible from the back side
of said structure opposite said first side 10.
[0023] Preferably, said longitudinal adjustment screw 5 engages a threaded nut integral
in translation with said hooking means 7, so that a rotation in one direction or in
the opposite direction of said longitudinal adjustment screw 5 causes a relative displacement
towards or away from the free end 7a of the hooking means 7 from the first side 10
of the support structure 4.
[0024] The cabinet suspending device 1, 101 further comprises a vertical adjustment screw
6 extending vertically in said support structure 4, such a vertical adjustment screw
6 acting between the support structure 4 and the hooking means 7 for vertically adjusting
the height of the relative position of the hooking means 7 with respect to the support
structure 4.
[0025] The hooking means 7 are supported and guided by the support structure 4 so as to
be displaceable in an adjustable manner both in the longitudinal/horizontal direction
and in the vertical direction with respect to the support structure 4 which is integrally
attached to the piece of furniture 2, so as to allow an adjustment of the depth and
in the vertical direction of the piece of furniture 2 attached to the wall by means
of the cabinet suspending device 1, 101.
[0026] Preferably, the hooking means 7 are guided and supported by the support structure
7 so as to be able to slide reversibly in both the longitudinal/horizontal direction
and in the vertical direction.
[0027] With specific reference to the first preferred embodiment of the cabinet suspending device
1 illustrated in figures 1 to 8, in the cabinet suspending device 1 the above blocking tab 12 is associated to said
hooking means 7 so as to be displaceable in a relative manner with respect to the
free hooking end 7a of said hooking means 7 to reversibly switch from:
- a position advanced towards the free hooking end 7a of the hooking means 7 in which
it partially obstructs said lower opening of the inner seat 11 of the hooking means
7, so as to prevent vertically pulling out the hooking portion 3b of the support rail
3 inserted in the retaining seat when the cabinet suspending device 1 is in use, and
- a position away from the free hooking end 7a of said hooking means 7 in which the
blocking tab 12 does not obstruct the lower opening of the inner seat 11 of the hooking
means 7 allowing vertically inserting and/or pulling out the hooking portion 3b of
the support rail 3 into/from the inner seat 3.
[0028] Preferably, the cabinet suspending device 1 further comprises actuating means which
can be operated to move the blocking tab 12 towards and from the advanced position
with respect to the free hooking end 7a of said the hooking means 7 when the cabinet
suspending device 1 is in use.
[0029] Preferably, the blocking tab 12 is coupled to the hooking means 7 to be reversibly
guided and supported by the hooking means 7 in the relative displacement from and
towards said advanced position.
[0030] According to the preferred embodiment shown in figures 1 to 8, said blocking tab
12 is slidably coupled to and supported by the hooking means 7 (preferably by the
bottom side of the hooking means 7) by means of a guide-slider coupling adapted to
allow to reversibly move the blocking tab 12 from and towards said advanced position
with respect to the hooking means 7.
[0031] Preferably, the cabinet suspending device 1 comprises elastic means 13 acting on
the blocking tab 12 to push said blocking tab 12 with a predetermined elastic load
towards said advanced position with respect to the hooking means 7.
[0032] According to the preferred embodiment shown in figures 1 to 8:
- the blocking tab 12 projects from the first side 10 of the support structure 7 parallel
to the hooking means 7 (preferably along the lower side of the hooking means 7);
- the cabinet suspending device 1 comprises stop means for limiting the maximum advanced
travel end position reached by the blocking tab 12 away from the first side 10 of
the support structure 4, and
- the lower opening of the inner seat 11 of the hooking means 7 is not obstructed by
the blocking tab 12 when the hooking means 7 are in said projecting position most
distanced from said support structure 4 and the blocking tab 12 is in said maximum
advanced travel end position.
[0033] Preferably, the lower opening of the inner seat 11 of said hooking means 7 surpasses
the blocking tab 12, thus being not obstructed when the hooking means 7 are in said
projecting position most distanced from said support structure 4 and the blocking
tab 12 is in said maximum advanced travel end position.
[0034] Preferably, said stop means for limiting the maximum advanced travel end position
reached by the blocking tab 12 comprises said vertical adjustment screw 6 against
which said blocking tab 12 interferes in said maximum advanced travel end position,
preferably said vertical adjustment screw 6 extends perpendicularly to said blocking
tab 12 through a slot extended in said blocking tab 12 in the longitudinal direction
in which said blocking tab 12 projects from said first side 10 of said support structure
4.
[0035] It should be noted that, in consideration of the above description in relation to
the first embodiment of the cabinet suspending device 1, by acting on the longitudinal
adjustment screw 5 it is possible to act on the hooking means 7 so as to bring them
in said projecting position most distanced from the support structure 4. As described
above, in this configuration (see figure 8) the lower opening of the inner seat 11
is not obstructed by the blocking tab 12 since said stop means, specifically the vertical
adjustment screw 6, limit the maximum advanced travel end position reachable by the
blocking tab 12 away from the first side 10 of the support structure 4. Therefore,
at least in this configuration (see figure 8), the lower opening of the inner seat
11 is not obstructed by the blocking tab 12, so that the relative insertion or removal
movement of the hooking portion 3b of the support rail 3 in the inner seat 11 through
the lower opening thereof is not hindered by the blocking tab 12. Starting from this
configuration (see figure 8) and acting on the longitudinal adjustment screw 5 so
as to determine a retraction of the free head end 7a of the hooking means 7 towards
the first wall 10 of the support structure, there occurs the partial obstruction of
the above lower opening of the inner seat 11 by the blocking tab 12 (see figure 6),
such closure being favoured by the action of the elastic means 13 acting on the blocking
tab 12 pushing it towards the free hooking end 7a of the hooking means 7. Once the
lower opening of the inner seat 11 is partially obstructed by the blocking tab 12
(as shown in figure 6), a further retraction of the free hooking end 7a of the hooking
means 7 towards the first wall 10 of the the support structure 4, achieved by continuing
to act on the vertical adjustment screw 6, causes a simultaneous retraction of the
blocking tab 12 together with the hooking means 7.
[0036] Preferably, the attachment portion 3b of the support rail 3 defines with the blocking
tab 12, more specifically with the lower side of the blocking tab 12, a shape coupling
between inclined planes such as to cause a reversible retraction of the blocking tab
12 from said advanced travel end position towards a distanced position during the
insertion of said attachment portion 3b of the support rail 3 in the lower opening
of the inner seat 11, as shown in figure 7.
[0037] Such a retraction of the blocking tab 12 is useful to allow the attachment portion
3b of the support rail 3 to effectively fit into the inner seat 11 and is made possible
by the presence of the elastic means 13 which, as a result of the thrust exerted by
the end of the attachment portion 3b of the support rail 3 on the lower side of the
blocking lug tab 12, allow the blocking tab 12 to retract momentarily towards the
first side 10 of the support structure 4. As soon as the head of the attachment portion
3b of the support rail 3 surpasses the blocking tab 12, being inserted inside the
inner seat 11, the elastic means 13 acting on the blocking tab 12 providing to bring
such a tab to the position in which they partially obstruct the lower opening of the
inner seat 11 (see figure 6).
[0038] In order to facilitate the above insertion, the head of the attachment portion 3b
of the support rail 3 should be larger than the remaining part of the body of the
attachment portion 3b so as to determine:
- a greater retraction of the blocking tab 12 towards the first side 10 of the support
structure 4 when such a head is located at the height of blocking tab 12, and
- a subsequent advancement of the blocking tab 12 towards the free hooking end 7a of
the hooking means 7, carried out due to the presence of the elastic means 13, once
the above head has completely surpassed the blocking tab 12 fitting into the inner
seat 11.
[0039] The above advancement of the blocking tab 12 towards the free hooking end 7a of the
hooking means 7 constitutes an effective obstacle to the fact that the head of the
hooking portion 3b of the support rail 3 may slip off from the inner seat 11 following
the interference that is created between the head of the attachment portion 3b of
the support rail 3 and the upper side of the blocking tab 12.
[0040] In order to increase the effectiveness with which the head of the hooking portion
3b of the support rail 3 is retained by the blocking tab 12 inside the inner seat
11, i.e. in order to have an effective interference of the head of the hooking portion
3b of the support rail 3 with the upper side of the blocking tab 12, the above head
of the hooking portion 3b of the support rail 3 is preferably shaped as a hook or
is folded, preferably away from said attachment portion 3a, i.e. in such a way that
the hook or the folding are facing towards the first side 10 of the support structure
when the suspending device is in use (see figures 6, 7 and 8).
[0041] With reference to the cabinet suspending device 1, it should be noted that the effective
retaining action exerted by the blocking tab 12 on the head of the attachment portion
3b of the support rail 3, so as to firmly hold it inside the inner seat 11, allows
preventing the piece of furniture 2 from being inadvertently disengaged from the support
rail 3 as a result of an accidental thrust from the bottom upwards.
[0042] At the same time, the simplicity of the cabinet suspending device 1 is such as to
determine the possibility of moving the blocking tab 12 from and towards said advanced
position, in which it partially obstructs the lower opening of the inner seat 11,
acting only on the usual adjustment screws, in particular on the longitudinal adjustment
screw 5, without therefore causing any complication of use with respect to the cabinet
suspending devices of the prior art.
[0043] With specific reference to the
second preferred embodiment of the cabinet suspending device 101 shown in figures 9 to 15, it should be noted that, unlike what has been described in relation to the cabinet
suspending device 1, in this embodiment the device is provided with a blocking tab
112, which is integral with the hooking means 7 in order to be integral with the free
end 7a of the hooking means 7 towards or away from said first side 10 of the support
structure 4.
[0044] Said blocking tab 112 is positioned at the lower opening of the inner seat 11 of
the free end 7a of the hooking means 7, more precisely in spaced relation from said
lower opening and outside the inner seat 11.
[0045] Preferably, the above free passage of the retaining seat, which is delimited and
defined by the inner seat 11 and by the blocking tab 112, is oriented away from the
first side 10 of the support structure 4, i.e. is oriented in such a way as to be
directed at least partially towards the support rail 3 when device 101 is in use (see
figure 11).
[0046] According to the preferred embodiment shown in figures 9 to 15:
- the lower opening of the inner seat 11 of the free end 7a of the hooking means 7 is
oriented downwards, i.e. towards the lower side, of the cabinet suspending device
101 when said cabinet suspending device is in use, and
- the blocking tab 112 extends below said lower opening of the inner seat 11 substantially
throughout the width of the lower opening itself.
[0047] Preferably, the side of the inner seat 11 closest to the free end 7a of said hooking
means 7 is defined by a front inner wall 113 which forms an inclined plane with respect
to the vertical, so as to be converging towards the first side 10 of the support structure
4 proceeding from the lower opening towards the bottom of the inner seat 11.
[0048] Due to the presence of the blocking tab 112, the cabinet suspending device 101 allows
effectively preventing the piece of furniture 2 from inadvertently disengaging from
the support rail 3 as a result of an accidental thrust from the bottom upwards.
[0049] In consideration of the presence of the blocking tab 112, the engagement or disengagement
of the upper hooking portion 3b of the support rail 3 inside the inner seat 11 of
the free hooking end 7a of the hooking means 7 is only possible by tilting upwards,
by a predetermined angle α, the piece of furniture 2 and the cabinet suspending device
101 associated therewith with respect to the support wall to which the support rail
3 is attached, as shown in figure 12. This inclination allows aligning the above free
passage of the retaining seat with the upper hooking portion 3b of the support rail
3, allowing such hooking portion 3b of the support rail 3 to fit all the way into
the inner seat 11 formed in the free hooking end 7a of the hooking means 7.
[0050] In order to carry out the above hooking operation with rotation of the suspending
device 101 with the upper hooking portion 3b of the support rail 3, it is first necessary
to act on the longitudinal adjustment screw 5 so as to move the free hooking end 7a
of the hooking means 7 away from the first side 10 of the support structure 4. This
allows tilting the piece of furniture 2 with respect to the wall while avoiding interference
between the piece of furniture 2 and the wall.
[0051] Once the cabinet suspending device 101 is in engagement with the hooking portion
3b of the support rail 3, acting on the longitudinal adjustment screw 5 causes a retraction
of the free hooking end 7a of the hooking means 7 toward the first side 10 of the
support structure 4, up to placing the back of the piece of furniture 2 at the correct
distance from the wall, i.e. at the distance by which the back of the piece of furniture
2 touches wall 2 without being inclined anymore. In this configuration, the distance
of the free hooking end 7a of the hooking means 7 from the first side 10 of the support
structure 4 is such as to prevent the piece of furniture 2 from only assuming a rotated/tilted
position by an angle much smaller than said angle α in figure 12, it being impossible
to disengage the hooking portion 3b of the support rail 3 from the inner seat 11 formed
in the free hooking end 7a of the hooking means 7, as can be seen in figures 14 and
15.
[0052] If it is necessary to remove the piece of furniture 2 from the wall, it is sufficient
to act first on the longitudinal adjustment screw 5 so as to cause a distancing of
the free hooking end 7a of the hooking means 7 from the first side 10 of the support
structure 4, so as to again tilt the piece of furniture 2 by said angle α with respect
to the wall (see figure 12).
[0053] As can be appreciated from what has been described, the cabinet suspending device
according to the present invention meets the above need and overcomes the drawbacks
which have been described in the introductory part of the present description with
reference to the prior art. In fact, with a simple and easy to implement structure,
the device is able to prevent the accidental disengagement of the cabinet suspending
device attached to the cabinet from the support rail.
[0054] A further advantage of the cabinet suspending device according to the invention lies
in that the same does not need further adjustment means with respect to those normally
provided for adjusting the positioning in depth and the vertical positioning of the
suspending device with respect to the support rail.
[0055] Of course, a man skilled in the art may make several changes and adjustments to the
cabinet suspending device described above in order to meet specific and incidental
needs, all falling within the scope of protection of the invention as defined in the
following claims.
[0056] Thus, for example, reference is always made in the description to a support rail
3 as the use of support rails nowadays is the most widely used method of supporting
cabinets on a wall. However, alternatively it is possible to provide for other support
means to be attached to the wall that are structurally and/or functionally equivalent,
such as hooks, brackets or pins.
[0057] Moreover, it is noted that, generally, for a correct support of a piece of furniture
it is necessary to provide for the use of two or more suitably spaced apart cabinet
suspending devices along the support rail.
