[0001] The present invention is directed to a candle, particularly but without limitation
of the type used for scenting and decorating the places in which it is lit.
[0002] In the prior art, these candles comprise a first body, made of wax, with a wick placed
therein, having at least one end projecting out of said body and a second body, also
made of wax, enclosing and embedding said first body, with the exception of a portion
of the end of said wick, the wax of said second body having a given color.
[0003] Preferably these wax bodies are placed in a vase- or glass-shaped container, with
a clear side wall.
[0004] One or both of the wax bodies may incorporate fragrance-emitting substances, adapted
to emit fragrances to the surrounding environment, particularly when the wick is lit.
[0005] The object of this invention is to add a device to the aforementioned candles that,
as the latter are lit, can create pictorial effects that prior art candles cannot
provide, as the color that liquefied wax takes during lighting is the same color as
that of the colored wax body that forms the candle.
[0006] Such object is fulfilled by a candle as defined in claim 1 below.
[0007] The invention will be now described in greater detail with reference to certain embodiments
thereof, given by way of illustration and without limitation, and shown in the annexed
drawings, in which:
- Figure 1 shows a vertical sectional view of a candle of the invention according to
a first embodiment, in which the pictorial effect-creating device consists of a plurality
of glitters, dispersed in the first wax body of the candle;
- Figure 2 shows a vertical sectional view of the candle of Figure 1, as it is being
lit, with a pool of liquefied wax of the first and second bodies and the glitters
floating therein;
- Figure 3 shows a vertical sectional view of a candle of the invention according to
a second embodiment, in which the pictorial effect-creating device consists of the
color of the wax of the first body of the candle differing from that of the wax of
the second body;
- Figure 4 shows a vertical sectional view of the candle of Figure 3, with a pool of
liquefied wax of the first and second bodies, whose color derives from the composition
of the colors of the wax of the first body and the wax of the second body.
[0008] Referring to the accompanying drawings and particularly to Figures 1 and 2, numeral
1 generally designates a container, particularly having a glass shape, with a bottom
2, a preferably clear side wall 3, and an opening 4.
[0009] A first wax body, referenced 5 is placed in the container, with a wick 6 positioned
therein.
[0010] The first wax body 5 and the wick 6 are held in a vertical position with the end
7 of the wick facing the opening 4 of the container 1.
[0011] A second wax body, referenced 8, enclosed and embeds the first body 5 and is visible
through the side wall 3 of the container 1.
[0012] According to the invention, the first wax body 5 includes a device that is designed
to create a pictorial effect when the candle is lit.
[0013] This device consists of a plurality of glitter elements, generally referenced 9,
which are brilliant enough to be well visible during use of the candle, without releasing
toxic substances when in contact with the flame.
[0014] Preferably, the elements 9 consists of aluminum flakes whose specific weight is comparable
to the weight of the melted wax which forms the pool 10, as shown in Figure 2, due
the heat of the flame 11 at the top 17 of the wick during use of the candle.
[0015] While the candle is lit, the glitters 9 are evenly dispersed and float in the pool
10 of melted wax originating from both the first wax body 5 and the second wax body
8 of the candle, thereby creating a pictorial effect and a remarkable aesthetic impact
on the viewer.
[0016] The aluminum flakes 9 have sizes selected to prevent obstruction of the pores of
the wick 6 during lighting, which would cause the flame 11 to extinguish.
[0017] Particularly, the flakes 9 have sizes ranging from 50 to 150 µm.
[0018] In view of enhancing the pictorial effect of the flakes 9, of the melted wax pool
10 should not be too large, because this would cause excessive dispersion of the flakes
9 in the melted wax, and reduce their optical and aesthetic effect.
[0019] With a container having a circular opening 4 with a diameter ranging from 60 to 65
mm, the melted wax pool 10 that forms as the candle is being lit is found to have
the best size for maximum enhancement of the brilliant effect of the aluminum flakes
9.
[0020] Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, in which structural elements equal to those of
the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2 are designated by same numerals, the pictorial effect-creating
device that is designed to exhibit its effect when the candle is lit, is found to
consist of the color applied to the wax of the first wax body 5, this color differing
from that of the wax of the second body 8 of the candle.
[0021] As the candle is lit, the melted colored wax of the first body 5 flows into the pool
10 and mixes with the wax of the second body 8, thereby generating therein a color
differing from that of the second wax body 8, which is still visible from the exterior
of the container 1 through the side wall 3.
[0022] For example, when the candle is lit, a yellow color of the first wax body 5 which
is not visible from the exterior of the container 1 and a color of the second wax
body 8, visible from the exterior of the container 1, merges with the blue color of
the second body in the melted wax pool 10 and creates therein a green color with a
surprising pictorial effect for the viewer of the candle.
[0023] The invention as described above can provide further embodiments, within the inventive
scope as claimed below.
1. A candle comprising a first body (5) made of wax, a wick (6) immersed in said first
wax body with at least one end (7) projecting out of said body, a second body (8)
made of wax, which encloses and embeds said first body (5) with the exception of an
end portion of said wick projecting out of the first body, the wax of said second
body (8) having a given color, characterized in that said first body (5) includes a pictorial effect-creating device (8), which is susceptible
to exhibit its own effect upon melting of the wax of said first (5) and said second
(8) bodies, when the wick has been lit.
2. A candle as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said pictorial effect-creating device in said first body (5) is represented by a
plurality of glitter elements (9), each of said elements being made of a material
having a lower density than the wax of the first (5) and second (8) body of the candle,
when liquefied due to the heat generated by the wick (6) as it is lit at its end (7)
and having a size larger than those of the pores of the material that forms the wick
(6).
3. A candle as claimed in claim 2, wherein said glitter elements consist of aluminum
flakes (9) with sizes ranging from 50 to 150 µm.
4. A candle as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said pictorial effect-creating device (9) in said first first body (5) consists of
the color applied to the wax of the first body (5) itself, differing from that of
the wax of said second body (8).
5. A candle as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that it comprises a glass-shaped container (1) with an opening (4) having a size that
ranges from 60 to 65 mm, wherein said first wax body (5) with the wick (6) is placed
on the bottom (2) in a vertical orientation, with the projecting end (7) of the wick
facing the opening (4) of the container and said second body (8) is placed against
the side wall (3) of the container.
6. A candle as claimed in claim 5, wherein at least the side wall (3) of the container
(1) is transparent.
7. A candle as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6, wherein at least one of said first (5)
and second (8) wax bodies includes a fragrance-emitting substance.
