[0001] The present invention relates to a kit for assembling a lamp, in particular a lamp
with high quality of lighting for different uses.
[0002] Among movable lamps ensuring a high quality of lighting, different types of lamps
are known whose morphological features are defined according to the specific needs
for which they were developed. By way of example, we can mention herein reading table
lamps, spotlights for lighting objects in a photographic studio, lamps for lighting
artworks, and high color rendering lamps for the correct perception of colors, intended
for example for the textile industry.
[0003] In all these applications, the light emitting body in theory can be the same. It
must ensure a high quality of lighting so as not to strain the user's eyes, and a
high Color Rendering Index CRI to make the colors of the illuminated objects appear
natural. In the various applications, different angles of light emission may be required,
which are generally achieved by placing specific lenses in front of the light emitting
body.
[0004] The approach to the need to properly position the light emitting body with respect
to the object to be illuminated, however, is different. For example, as to reading
table lamps, the orientation of the light emitting body with respect to its base,
and therefore with respect to the table on which the object to be illuminated lies,
is nearly standard, and the frame of the lamp usually allows for limited adjustments
in height and inclination.
[0005] Among the lamps for lighting artworks, e.g., for the preparation of an exhibition,
each individual application can be considered as a separate case. Each artwork is
indeed almost unique, and also the exposure conditions are very peculiar. Therefore,
in this case, it shall be possible to provide a compact lamp, which does not hinder
the view of the work, but which is very versatile in terms of the orientation of the
light beam. To this end, supports specifically developed for each individual application
shall be often used.
[0006] Similar needs can be related to extremely accurate and precise activities, such as,
for example, the restoration or conservation of valuable objects. If this is the case,
a lamp frame suitable for any use will be difficult to find, and, again, the light
emitting body shall be mounted on a specifically designed support.
[0007] These solutions, although appreciated, are not without drawbacks. Actually, as it
can be readily understood, the specific manufacturing of the supports entails a series
of inconveniences and rigidities. First of all, the intervention of an expert able
to make the support with the desired morphological features is required. This is very
costly and time-consuming, and, if a change is to be made, it is likely that the lamp
support will have to be entirely remade.
[0008] Therefore, the object of the present invention is to overcome the drawbacks underlined
above with respect to the known art.
[0009] In particular, a task of this invention is to make available a kit for assembling
a lamp which is easily reconfigurable and adaptable to different usage needs.
[0010] This object and these tasks are achieved by means of a kit for assembling a lamp
according to claim 1.
[0011] To better understand the invention and appreciate its advantages, some of its exemplary
and non-limiting embodiments are described below with reference to the accompanying
drawings, wherein:
- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a kit according to the invention;
- Figure 2 shows a lamp obtainable by means of the kit in Figure 1;
- Figure 3 shows a lamp obtainable by means of a kit according to the invention;
- Figure 4 shows a lamp obtainable by means of a kit according to the invention;
- Figure 5 shows a detail of the section taken along a plane including the axes of the
two rods in Figure 4;
- Figure 6 shows a lamp obtainable by means of a kit according to the invention;
- Figure 7 shows a first surface of the base plate according to the invention;
- Figure 8 shows a second surface of the base plate according to the invention;
- Figure 9 shows a section taken along line IX-IX in Figure 8;
- Figure 10 shows an enlarged view of the detail referred to as X in Figure 9.
[0012] Since the invention is designed to be used in presence of gravitational acceleration
g, it is understood that the latter unequivocally defines the vertical direction, and
therefore the horizontal direction. Likewise, it is understood that, based on gravity
acceleration
g, the terms "high", "higher", "above" and the like are defined unequivocally, with
respect to the terms "low", "lower", "below" and the like.
[0013] The invention relates to a kit 20 for making a reconfigurable lamp 22. The kit 20
comprises:
- a base plate 24 having prevailing extension in a plane π and comprising a plurality of through holes 26 having axis perpendicular to the plane
π;
- a plurality of support rods 28, each of which has:
- prevailing extension along an own axis X,
- at least one threaded hole 30 having axis parallel to the axis X,
- at least one through hole 27 having axis perpendicular to the axis X,
- at least one light emitting body 32 suitable for generating a light cone having axis
L, and comprising a threaded hole 31 having axis perpendicular to axis L,
- a first screw 34, suitable for crossing one of the through holes 26 of the base plate
and for engaging the threaded hole 30 of a support rod 28, so as to secure said support
rod 28 to the base plate 24; and
- a second screw 35 suitable for crossing one of the through holes 27 of a support rod
28 and for engaging the threaded hole 31 of the light emitting body 32, so as to secure
the light emitting body 32 to said support rod 28.
[0014] Preferably, the support rods 28 (hereinafter also referred to just as rods 28) have
a polygonal, even more preferably square, cross section. Advantageously, the cross
section is the same in all the rods 28 in the same kit 20.
[0015] The support rods 28 of the kit 20 can have different lengths from one another and
can have a different number of through holes 27 distributed along their length. According
to an embodiment (e.g., the one in Figure 1), the kit 20 may comprise three support
rods 28 having different and incremental lengths.
[0016] Preferably, the threaded hole 30 of each support rod 28 is located at one end and
is axially formed along the axis
X of the support rod 28 itself.
[0017] The first screw 34 advantageously comprises a threaded stem 36 and a head 38. The
second screw 35 advantageously comprises an at least partly threaded stem 37 and a
head 39.
[0018] Preferably, the through holes 26 provided in the base plate 24 are smooth and have
a diameter slightly larger than the nominal diameter of the first screw 34. Likewise,
preferably, the through holes 27 provided in the support rods 28 are smooth and have
a diameter slightly larger than the nominal diameter of the second screw 35. The through
holes 26, 27 thus allow for the free sliding and the free rotation of the stem 36,
37 of the respective screws 34, 35. At the same time, the through holes 26, 27 have
a diameter such as to provide the head 38, 39 of the respective screws 34, 35 with
an axial abutment surface. The threaded holes 30 provided in the support rods 28 comprise
a thread complementary to the one of the first screw 34. Likewise, the threaded hole
31 provided in the light emitting body 32 comprises a complementary thread to the
one of the second screw 35. Such threaded holes 30, 31 can be blind.
[0019] Preferably, the threaded hole 31 of the light emitting body 32 is in accordance with
ISO 1222:2010, which sets the standard for securing cameras to their tripods or stands.
The thread required by this standard is called 1/4-20 UNC (
Unified National Coarse) and is therefore characterized by a nominal diameter of ¼ inch and by a pitch of
20 threads per inch. Of course, the second screw 35 intended to secure the light emitting
body 32 to the support rod 28 must comply with the same standard, too.
[0020] Differently, the threaded hole 30 formed in the support rod 28 and the corresponding
screw 34 preferably abide by other, more common ISO standards for this type of applications,
e.g. they can have a metric thread M5. This last thread has a narrower pitch which
better addresses the need to dose the clamping force of the screw.
[0021] The second screw 35 intended to secure the light emitting body 32 to the support
rod 28 can have a head 39 suitable for providing an easy grip to the user. It is preferable
that the screw 35 intended to secure the light emitting body 32 to the support rod
28 can be easily tightened and untightened manually, without using tools. The head
39 of the second screw 35 may, for example, be shaped as a wing nut, a ferrule, a
knob, or the like.
[0022] Preferably, the base plate 24 (hereinafter also referred to just as plate 24) comprises
recesses 40, each provided around one of the through holes 26. The recesses 40 have
a shape complementary to the polygonal cross section of the support rods 28. This
way, the axial end of each rod 28 may be inserted axially along the axis
X1 in a recess 40, thus being locked with respect to a rotation around the same axis
X1. The support rod 28 may thus be firmly fixed to the base plate 24 by means of a first
screw 34. In this regard, see specifically the left side of the section in Figure
5.
[0023] A detailed description of some embodiments of the base plate 24 is provided later.
[0024] The light emitting body 32 may be placed next to the support rod 28, so that the
threaded hole 31 of the light emitting body 32 is coaxial with one of the through
holes 27 of the rod 28. The light emitting body 32 may thus be firmly fixed to the
rod 28 by means of a second screw 35.
[0025] The kit 20 may advantageously comprise a plurality of O-rings 42, e.g. made of elastomeric
material, rubber or silicone, and suitable for cooperating with the screws 34 and
35. In particular, the O-rings 42 are suitable for sliding along the stem 36, 37 and
leaning axially against the head 38, 39 of the screws 34, 35.
[0026] According to some embodiments of the invention, the thickness of an O-ring 42 is
greater than the depth of the recesses 40 formed in the plate 24. In this case, the
O-ring 42 may be inserted into the recess 40 so as to keep the axial end of the support
rod 28 outside the recess 40 itself. The presence of the O-ring 42 therefore prevents
the axial end of the rod 28 from entering the recess 40, thus keeping its rotation
around the axis
X2 free. However, at the same time, the O-ring 42 is a friction member which, being
interposed between the base plate 24 and the support rod 28, stops their relative
rotation once the first screw 34 is tightened. In this regard, see specifically the
right side of the section in Figure 5.
[0027] Likewise, other O-rings 42 may also be used in cooperation with the second screw
35, e.g. between the light emitting body 32 and the support rod 28, and/or between
the head 39 of the second screw 35 and the surface of the support rod 28 around the
through hole 27. The O-ring 42 is a friction member which, being interposed between
two mechanical members, stops their relative rotation once the relevant screw 34,
35 is tightened. In addition, the presence of an O-ring 42 prevents the direct rubbing
of two mechanical members from damaging the surfaces.
[0028] The light emitting body 32 preferably comprises a high-quality light source. For
example, a LED light source with a broad spectrum and high intensity emission, and
with a high Color Rendering Index, preferably greater than 90/100.
[0029] The light emitting body 32 may preferably comprise an interchangeable lens 44 placed
in front of the light source. The replacement of the lens 44 can be useful for maintenance,
but also to adapt the width of the angle of the light cone to the different usage
needs.
[0030] The one described above represents the basic kit 20 according to the invention, which
may be integrated by adding other members. Nevertheless, the skilled person must have
noticed that the basic kit 20 already allows to provide a stable support holding the
light emitting body 32 in any direction in space. The possibility of rotating the
base plate 24 and/or rotating the support rod 28 with respect to the base plate 24,
and the possibility of rotating the light emitting body 32 with respect to the support
rod 28 together allow to orient the axis L of the light cone in any spatial direction.
The possibility of securing the support rod 28 to the base plate 24 and the possibility
of securing the light emitting body 32 to the support rod 28 allows therefore to secure
the axis L of the light cone in the desired spatial direction.
[0031] The kit 20 according to the invention may also comprise a power cable (not shown)
for the light emitting body 32. Advantageously, it is a type of power cable that can
be connected and disconnected to/from the light emitting body 32 as needed. Preferably,
the light emitting body 32 comprises a socket, and the power cable has a connector
mounted thereon which is suitable for being plugged into the socket. For example,
the socket and the plug can be in accordance with the USB standard, preferably of
the micro-USB type. The widespread use of the USB standard makes it very easy to find
energy sources suitable for powering the light emitting body 32 through the power
cable.
[0032] In accordance with a possible embodiment (see, e.g., Figure 6), the kit 20 may comprise
at least one accessory screw 46, provided with the respective nut 48. The accessory
screw 46 is suitable for crossing two consecutive through holes 27
1 and 27
2, so as to secure two support rods 28
1 and 28
2 to each other. Here too, preferably, O-rings 42 are used. A first O-ring 42 between
the head 47 of the accessory screw 46 and the first rod 28
1, a second O-ring 42 between the two support rods 28
1 and 28
2, and a third O-ring 42 between the second rod 28
2 and the nut 48. Again, the O-rings 42 have the twofold purpose of ensuring the desired
friction and preventing the surfaces from being damaged by mutual contact.
[0033] The presence of the accessory screw 46 in the kit 20 allows to set up a lamp 22 with
the configuration exemplified in Figure 6, where a first rod 28 perpendicular to the
base plate 24 holds a second tilted rod 28, which in turn holds the light emitting
body 32.
[0034] The head 47 of the accessory screw 46 and/or the corresponding nut 48 are preferably
suitable for providing an easy grip to the user. It is preferable that the accessory
screw 46 can be easily tightened and untightened manually, without using tools. The
head 47 of the accessory screw 46 and/or the corresponding nut 48 may, for example,
be shaped as a wing nut, a ferrule, a knob, or the like.
[0035] In this embodiment of the kit 20, a counterweight 50 is also preferably provided.
The counterweight 50 is suitable for being mounted on a support rod 28, e.g. the counterweight
50 may comprise a screw suitable for being screwed into the threaded hole 30 formed
at the end of the support rod 28. As can be seen in Figure 6, the counterweight 50
is placed on the second support rod 28
2 on the opposite side with respect to the light emitting body 32, so as to compensate
at least partially its weight with respect to the pivot consisting of the accessory
screw 46 which connects the two rods 281 and 282.
[0036] Preferably, the plate 24 comprises a service surface 54 and a noble surface 56, opposite
to the service surface 54, intended, in use, to be exposed to view. The kit 20 according
to the invention may also comprise caps 52 suitable for being inserted in the recesses
40, and possibly in the through holes 26 of the base plate 24, so as to make flat
and continuous the noble surface 56 of the latter. The caps 52, in addition to having
an aesthetic purpose, also prevent dust, dirt and debris from entering the through
holes 26 during long periods of inactivity.
[0037] In accordance with other possible embodiments, the kit 20 may comprise a plurality
of light emitting bodies 32 which may be mounted on the same base plate 24. This possibility
provided by the kit 20 according to the invention can prove to be particularly useful,
for example, when particularly intense lighting and/or the creation of direct light
cones along different axes are required. By way of example, Figure 3 shows a lamp
22 comprising a plate 24, a rod 28, and actually three light emitting bodies 32 oriented
homogeneously. As can be seen, the lamp 22 in Figure 3 is mounted on the ceiling.
The features of the plate 24 that allow this solution will be explained in more detail
below.
[0038] As can be seen in the appended Figures 4 and 5, a single lamp 22 may comprise a plurality
of support rods 28 mounted on the same base plate 24, and a plurality of light emitting
bodies 32 mounted on the support rods 28. By way of example, Figure 4 shows a lamp
22 comprising a plate 24, two rods 28, and actually four light emitting bodies 32
oriented in different ways.
[0039] According to a second aspect, the invention relates to a base plate 24 for a lamp
22. The base plate 24 according to the invention has prevailing extension in a plane
π, and comprises:
- a plurality of through holes 26 having axis perpendicular to the plane π;
- a service surface 54 and a noble surface 56, opposite to the service surface 54 and
intended, in use, to be exposed;
- at least one soft pad 58 provided on the service surface 54 and protruding with respect
to the latter of a thickness s;
- at least one permanent magnet 60; and
- at least one keyhole hang hole 62, provided on the service surface 54. The base plate
24 described below may be part of the kit 20 described above or may be employed for
other uses with other types of kits.
[0040] In the embodiments shown herein, the base plate 24 comprises recesses 40, provided
on the noble surface 56. Each recess 40 is provided around one of the through holes
26. The recesses 40 preferably have a polygonal shape, even more preferably a square
one. The base plate 24 may be used in conjunction with support rods 28 of the type
described above. In particular, each support rod 28 has an axis
X and a cross section complementary to the shape of the recesses 40. This way, the
axial end of each rod may be inserted axially along the axis
X in a recess 40, thus being locked with respect to a rotation around the same axis
X. The support rod 28 further comprises an axial threaded hole 30 and may therefore
be firmly fixed to the base plate 24 by means of a first screw 34. In use, the service
surface 54 is intended to lean against an external support structure 70, whereas the
noble surface 56 is intended to be exposed to view. As stated above, on the service
surface 54 there is at least one soft pad 58 protruding therefrom with a thickness
s. In other words, the soft pad 58 defines a supporting surface placed at a distance
s from the service surface 54 of the base plate 24. The soft pad 58 is preferably
made of closed-cell foam, but, alternatively and/or in addition, it can also be made
of other materials such as elastomeric material, natural rubber and/or silicone. It
is designed to provide high sliding friction between the base plate 24 and the external
support structure 70 against which the base plate 24 leans. In addition, another task
of the soft pad 58 may be to preserve the surface of the external support structure
70, preventing the direct contact of the base plate 24 from damaging it.
[0041] The soft pad 58 is preferably provided in a plurality of specimens. By way of example,
the base plates 24 illustrated in the appended figures comprise four soft pads 58,
placed near the corners of the plate 24.
[0042] As mentioned above, the base plate 24 comprises at least one permanent magnet 60,
preferably a plurality of permanent magnets 60. By way of example, the base plates
24 illustrated in the appended figures comprise four permanent magnets 60, placed
near the corners of the plate 24. The permanent magnet 60 or the permanent magnets
60 as a whole generate enough force to engage the base plate 24 to a ferromagnetic
support structure 70, regardless of the orientation of the latter with respect to
the gravitational acceleration
g. Preferably, the force generated by the permanent magnets 60 is able to engage to
the ferromagnetic support structure 70 even a lamp 22 comprising the base plate 24
itself. See, for example, Figure 3, wherein the lamp 22 obtained from the kit 20 according
to the invention is engaged by means of the magnets 60 below a ferromagnetic support
structure 70. By way of example only, this feature of the plate 24 according to the
invention allows to suspend the plate 24 itself and/or the related lamp 22 on the
external wall of a refrigerator or other steel furniture.
[0043] Permanent magnets 60 suitable for use in the present invention may be, for example,
those of the rare-earth type, such as neodymium magnets. Each permanent magnet 60
is preferably removably engaged to the plate 24, e.g. by means of a screw 61. This
allows to remove the permanent magnets 60 from the plate 24, when they are not required
for the positioning of the plate 24 itself. Removing the permanent magnets 60 may
be highly recommended in some cases, for example when the base plate 24 is to be used
near magnetic data storage media to avoid the risk of demagnetization.
[0044] The preferable relative positions for the supporting surface provided by the soft
pad 58, the service surface 54 of the plate 24, and the surface of the permanent magnet
60 are described below with particular reference to Figure 10. As already stated above,
the supporting surface provided by the soft pad 58 protrudes by a distance s from
the service surface 54 of the plate 24. By contrast, the permanent magnet 60 preferably
is recessed, i.e. it is shifted by a distance
t towards the noble surface 56, with respect to the service surface 54 of the plate
24. This entails that, when the base plate 24 is placed next to a support structure
70, the first contact with the latter is established by the soft pad 58. The forces
that push the plate 24 towards the support structure 70 compress the soft pad 58.
In particular, depending on the conditions, the weight force and/or the magnetic force
will act if the support structure 70 is ferromagnetic. The relative positions described
above prevent the permanent magnet 60 itself from coming into direct contact with
the ferromagnetic support structure 70. Actually, even if the soft pad 58 were fully
compressed, the service surface 54 of the base plate 24 would touch the support structure
70 before the permanent magnet 60. It is actually preferable to avoid direct contact,
both to avoid damage such as scratches or abrasions to the ferromagnetic support structure
70, and to avoid damage to the permanent magnet 60 itself, whose mechanical characteristics
make it rather delicate. Preferably, the base plate 24 according to the invention
also comprises ferromagnetic members 64 to be provided on an external support structure
70. In this respect, see Figure 9. Providing ferromagnetic members 64 allows to exploit
the force of the permanent magnets 60 of the plate 24 also to suspend the latter on
non-ferromagnetic support structures, such as wall, wooden, polymeric structures,
or structures made of non-ferrous metals.
[0045] Preferably, the base plate 24 comprises an equal number of soft pads 58 and permanent
magnets 60, and they are mounted in correspondence of each other. For example, in
accordance with the embodiments illustrated in Figures 8 to 10, the soft pad 58 comprises
an opening in which the permanent magnet 60 is placed. In the illustrated embodiments,
the soft pad 58 is glued to the service surface 54, whereas the permanent magnet 60
is reversibly engaged to it by means of the screw 61.
[0046] The base plate 24 further comprises a keyhole hang hole 62, provided on the service
surface 54. The keyhole hang hole 62 is preferably blind, so that it does not appear
on the noble surface 56. Preferably, the keyhole hang hole 62 is shaped like a keyhole,
i.e. it comprises a large part connected to a narrow and elongated part. This
per se well-known shape of the keyhole hang hole 62 allows to firmly engage the base plate
24 to a support structure 70 by means of a fastening member, e.g. a screw. In particular,
the screw is provided in the support structure 70, so that the head scarcely protrudes.
Then, the plate 24 is placed next to the support structure 70 so that the head of
the screw is accommodated in the largest part of the keyhole hang hole 62. Then, the
plate is slid into the plane
π, so that the head of the screw finds itself in the narrow part of the keyhole hang
hole 62.
[0047] The shape of the keyhole hang hole 62 therefore determines a proper orientation for
arranging vertically the base plate 24. In particular, plate 24 is properly oriented
when the large part of the keyhole hang hole 62 is placed below the narrow part. This
way, the hanging of the base plate 24 is stable and reliable.
[0048] Moreover, it is preferable that the keyhole hang hole 62 is shifted in the plane
π with respect to the center of mass of the base plate 24. The direction in which the
keyhole hang hole 62 is shifted determines the proper orientation for arranging vertically
the base plate 24. In particular, plate 24 is properly oriented when the keyhole hang
hole 62 is placed above the center of mass. This way, the hanging of the base plate
24 is stable and reliable.
[0049] As can be observed, in the embodiment illustrated in Figure 8, both the features
described above are present. It can therefore be noted that, when looking at the service
surface 54 of the plate 24 in the proper orientation, the narrow part of the keyhole
hang hole 62, the large part of the keyhole hang hole 62, and the center of mass of
the plate 24 are aligned in this order from the top down along a vertical line v.
[0050] As the skilled person can well understand, if not just the base plate 24, but an
entire lamp 22 is hanging up, that does not necessarily mean that the center of mass
is still along the vertical line v. Indeed, if the lamp includes support rods 28 and/or
light emitting bodies 32 distributed not symmetrically with respect to the vertical
line v, the center of mass of the lamp 22 will be shifted laterally with respect to
the center of mass of the base plate 24 alone. In this case, however, the friction
provided by the soft pads 28 and/or possibly the force generated by the permanent
magnets 60 contribute to make the hanging of the lamp 22 still stable.
[0051] Preferably, the base plate 24 according to the invention further comprises cable
ducts 66. Preferably the cable ducts 66 are embedded in the service surface 54 and
are suitable for accommodating at least one power cable. This way, the power cable
can be passed between the plate 24 itself and the external support structure 70, without
this causing any discomfort to the stability of the plate 24. Preferably, the cable
ducts 66 are branched so as to make available a plurality of different paths to the
power cable. In addition, a cavity 67 can be placed at the center of the branching
of the cable ducts 66. If the power cable emerges directly from the support structure
70, e.g. from a hole, the cavity 67 on the service surface 54 of the plate 24 can
easily accommodate the curve of the power cable, concealing it from view.
[0052] The base plate 24 according to the invention may also comprise, on the service surface
54 in correspondence of at least one through hole 26, a seat 68 suitable for accommodating
the head 38 of a first screw 34. In particular, the seat 68 is suitable for accommodating
the head 38 of the first screw 34 intended to secure a support rod 28 to the base
plate 24. In this regard, see Figure 5.
[0053] As the skilled person can understand, the invention allows to overcome the drawbacks
highlighted above with reference to the prior art.
[0054] In particular, the present invention makes available a kit for assembling a lamp
which is easily reconfigurable and adaptable to different usage needs.
[0055] It is clear that the specific features are described in relation to various embodiments
of the invention with exemplifying and non-limiting intent. Obviously, a person skilled
in the art may make further modifications and variations to this invention, in order
to meet contingent and specific requirements. For example, the technical features
described in connection with an embodiment of the invention may be extrapolated from
it and applied to other embodiments of the invention. Such modifications and variations
are, however, contained within the scope of the invention, as defined by the following
claims.
