Description

[0001] This invention relates generally to a carton for containing a plurality of articles and a blank for forming the carton. More specifically, although not exclusively, this invention relates to a carton having panels which separate adjacent articles.

[0002] Cartons for encasing multiple articles are useful for protecting such articles as they are transported. There is an increasing consumer trend where products are purchased online and shipped to the consumer directly. Cartons used for packaging such products can be exposed to more aggressive environments than those used in conventional in-store environments.

[0003] As such, carton designs must be strong enough to support multiple articles, whilst preventing or at least mitigating any impact from being transferred to the products during transportation. This can be particularly challenging where aggregate, liquid or semi-liquid products are transported in fragile containers designed to minimise packaging.

[0004] US2014263353 and EP0084497 both describe cartons incorporating partition panels, which segment the internal volume of the carton to produce individual chambers for receiving a plurality of articles in the same carton whilst keeping the products separate. Whilst effective for their intended purpose, these cartons could be improved and simplified to accommodate and protect more effectively articles intended to be transported directly to consumers in individual cartons.

[0005] US3300116, US2089067 and US2003/029753 each disclose cartons having multiple compartments.

[0006] It is therefore a non-exclusive aim of the invention to provide a carton which is simpler and/or more effective for shipping directly to consumers aggregate, liquid or semi-liquid products in fragile containers.

[0007] It is a more general non-exclusive aim of the invention to provide an improved and/or simplified carton.

[0008] Accordingly, a first aspect of the invention provides a carton for holding a plurality of articles, the carton comprising a plurality of panels hingedly connected to one another and describing an internal volume, the panels including: a pair of side panels; a pair of end panels hingedly connected to the side panels; a first top panel hingedly connected to one of the side panels; a second top panel hingedly connected to one of the end panels; and a lid panel hingedly connected to the other one of the side panels or to the other one of the end panels and overlying the first and second top panels; wherein each top panel have a respective partition panel, which is hingedly connected thereto, and the partition panels extend into the internal volume, are orthogonal to one another and inter-engage with one another to partition the internal volume of the carton.

[0053] Referring now to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a carton 1 according to an embodiment of the invention for holding a plurality of articles (not shown). The carton 1 has a pair of spaced apart, opposed side panels 21, 22 and a pair of spaced apart, opposed end panels 31, 32 hingedly connected to the side panels 21, 22 at respective fold lines F. The side panels 21, 22 and end panels 31, 32 are attached at their lower edges to a square base 4 formed of a plurality of bottom panels 40. The side panels 21, 22 and end panels 31, 32 extend orthogonally from the base 4 and define, together therewith, an internal volume V with an open top.

[0054] The carton 1 includes a first top panel 5 hingedly connected to the upper edge of a first side panel 21 along a first, upper fold line F₁ and a second top panel 6 hingedly connected to the upper edge of a first end panel 31 at second, upper fold line F₂. A first partition panel 7 is hingedly connected along a free end of the first top panel 5 at a third, upper fold line F₃ and a second partition panel 8 is hingedly connected to a free end of the second top panel 6 at a fourth, upper fold line F₄. The carton also includes a third top panel 9a hingedly connected to the upper edge of a second end panel 32 at a fifth, upper fold line F₅ and a lid panel 9b hingedly connected to the upper edge of a second side panel 22 at a sixth, upper fold line F₆. The first, third and sixth upper fold lines F₁, F₃, F₆ are parallel to one another and the second, fourth and fifth upper fold lines F₂, F₄, F₅ are parallel to one another and orthogonal to the first, third and sixth upper fold lines F₁, F₃, F₆.

[0055] Each of the first and second top panels 5, 6 is sized to cover approximately half of the open top of the internal volume V. The first top panel 5 is rectangular in plan, while the second top panel 6 is trapezoidal in plan. The third top panel 9a is trapezoidal in plan and is sized to cover the majority of the open top of the internal volume V. The lid panel 9b is square in plan and is substantially coextensive with the base 4, thereby to cover the entire open top of the internal volume V.

The insert 10 is square in plan and includes four receptacles or receiving areas 11 in a support panel 12 for accommodating articles (not shown). The insert 10 also includes leg panels 14 hingedly connected to and extending along opposing peripheral edges of the support panel 12. When the insert 10 is received within the internal volume V of the carton 1, the support panel 12 divides the internal volume V into upper and lower chambers.

[0062] Each receptacle 11 is configured to receive an article, in the form of a tray containing pet food, in interference fit therewith. The hinged tabs 13 are configured to be folded downward, toward the bottom panel 4 of the carton 1 and provide additional support to the articles received in the receptacles 11. Each receptacle 11 is separated from adjacent receptacles by margins of the support panel 12 of the insert 10. In use, the margins of the support panel 12 provide support to flanges (not shown) of the trays (not shown) received in the receptacle, whilst the edges of the cutout and the hinged tabs 13 engage the outer surface of the body of the trays.

As such, the internal volume V is divided into four chambers extending the entire height of the carton.

Claims

1. A carton (1, 100) for holding a plurality of articles, the carton (1, 100) comprising a plurality of panels hingedly connected to one another and describing an internal volume (V), the panels including:

a pair of side panels (21, 22; 121, 122);

a pair of end panels (31, 32; 131, 132) hingedly connected to the side panels (21, 22; 121, 122);

a first top panel (5; 105) hingedly connected to one of the side panels (21, 22; 121, 122);

a second top panel (6; 106) hingedly connected to one of the end panels (31, 32; 131, 132); and

a lid panel (9b; 109b) hingedly connected to the other one of the side panels (21, 22; 121 122) or to the other one of the end panels (31, 32; 131, 132) and overlying the first and second top panels (5, 6; 105, 106);

wherein each top panel (5, 6; 105, 106) has a respective partition panel (7, 8; 107, 108), which is hingedly connected thereto, and the partition panels (7, 8; 107, 108) extend into the internal volume (V), are orthogonal to one another and inter-engage with one another to partition the internal volume (V) of the carton (1, 100).

2. A carton (1, 100) according to claim 1, wherein the lid panel (9b; 109b) comprises a locking tab (91b; 191b) for engaging one of the top panels (5, 6; 105, 106), the lid panel (9b; 109b) being configured to cover the entire internal volume (V) of the carton (1, 100).

3. A carton (1, 100) according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein one of the first and second top panels (5; 105) comprises a slot (51; 151) through which the partition panel (8; 108) hingedly connected to the other of the first and second top panels (6; 106) extends to inter-engage the partition panels (7, 8; 107, 108).

4. A carton (1, 100) according to claim 3, wherein at least one of the partition panels (7; 107) comprises a slot (71; 171) through which the other partition panel (8; 108) extends.

5. A carton (1, 100) according to claim 4, wherein each of the partition panels (7, 8; 107, 108) comprises a slot (71, 81; 171, 181) through which the other partition panel extends.

6. A carton (1) according to any preceding claim comprising an insert (10) received within the internal volume (V) and describing upper and lower chambers, the insert (10) having a plurality of receptacles (11) for receiving articles.

7. A carton (1) according to claim 6, wherein the partition panels (7, 8) describe a plurality of chambers each comprising one of the receptacles (11).

8. A carton (1) according to claim 6 or claim 7, wherein at least one of the partition panels (7, 8) abuts the insert (10).

9. A carton (100) according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein at least one of the partition panels (107, 108) abuts a bottom panel (104) of the carton (100).

10. A package comprising a carton (1, 100) according to any preceding claim with a plurality of trays containing pet food received therein, wherein at least two of the trays is separated by one of the partition panels (7, 8; 107, 108).

11. A blank for forming a carton (1, 100) having an internal volume (V), the blank comprising a plurality of panels hingedly connected to one another and including:

a pair of side panels (21, 22; 121, 122);

a pair of end panels (31, 32; 131, 132) hingedly connected to the side panels (21, 22; 121, 122);

a first top panel (5; 105) hingedly connected to one of the side panels (21, 22; 121, 122);

a second top panel (6; 106) hingedly connected to one of the end panels (31, 32; 131, 132); and

a lid panel (9b; 109b) hingedly connected to the other one of the side panels (21, 22; 121 122) or to the other one of the end panels (31, 32; 131, 132) and overlying the first and second top panels (5, 6; 105, 106);

wherein each top panel (5, 6; 105, 106) has a respective partition panel (7, 8; 107, 108), which is hingedly connected thereto, and the partition panels (7, 8; 107, 108) extend, in use, into the internal volume (V), are orthogonal to one another and inter-engage with one another to partition the internal volume (V) of the carton (1, 100).

12. A blank according to claim 11, wherein the lid panel (9b; 109b) comprises a locking tab (91b; 191b) for engaging one of the top panels (5, 6; 105, 106), the lid panel (9b; 109b) being configured to cover the entire internal volume (V) of the carton (1, 100).

13. A blank according to claim 11 or claim 12, wherein one of the top panels (5; 105) comprises a slot (51; 151) for receiving, in use, the partition panel (8; 108) hingedly connected to the other of the top panels (6; 106) to inter-engage the partition panels (7, 8; 107, 108).

14. A blank according to claim 13, wherein one or both partition panels (7, 8; 107, 108) comprises a slot (71; 171) for receiving, in use, the other partition panel (8; 108).

15. A blank according to any one of claims 11 to 14 in combination with an insert (10) for describing upper and lower chambers within the internal volume (V), the insert (10) comprising a plurality of receptacles (11) for receiving articles.

1. Karton (1, 100) zum Halten einer Vielzahl von Artikeln, wobei der Karton (1, 100) eine Vielzahl von Wänden umfasst, die gelenkig miteinander verbunden sind und ein Innenvolumen (V) beschreiben, wobei die Wände Folgendes einschließen:

ein Paar von Seitenwänden (21, 22; 121, 122);

ein Paar von Endwänden (31, 32; 131, 132), die gelenkig mit den Seitenwänden (21, 22; 121, 122) verbunden sind;

eine erste obere Wand (5; 105), die gelenkig mit einer der Seitenwände (21, 22; 121, 122) verbunden ist;

eine zweite obere Wand (6; 106), die gelenkig mit einer der Endwände (31, 32; 131, 132) verbunden ist; und

eine Deckelwand (9b; 109b), die gelenkig mit der anderen der Seitenwände (21, 22; 121, 122) oder mit der anderen der Endwände (31, 32; 131, 132) verbunden ist und über der ersten und zweiten oberen Wand (5, 6; 105, 106) liegt;

wobei jede obere Wand (5, 6; 105, 106) eine jeweilige Trennwand (7, 8; 107, 108) aufweist, die gelenkig damit verbunden ist, und sich die Trennwände (7, 8; 107, 108) in das Innenvolumen (V) erstrecken, orthogonal zueinander sind und miteinander in Eingriff stehen, um das Innenvolumen (V) des Kartons (1, 100) aufzuteilen.

2. Karton (1, 100) nach Anspruch 1, wobei die Deckelwand (9b; 109b) eine Verriegelungslasche (91b; 191b) zum Eingriff mit einer der oberen Wände (5, 6; 105, 106) umfasst, wobei die Deckelwand (9b; 109b) konfiguriert ist, um das gesamte Innenvolumen (V) des Kartons (1, 100) abzudecken.

3. Karton (1, 100) nach Anspruch 1 oder Anspruch 2, wobei eine der ersten und zweiten oberen Wand (5; 105) einen Schlitz (51; 151) umfasst, durch den sich die Trennwand (8; 108), die gelenkig mit der anderen der ersten und zweiten oberen Wand (6; 106) verbunden ist, erstreckt, um die Trennwände (7, 8; 107, 108) miteinander in Eingriff zu bringen.

4. Karton (1, 100) nach Anspruch 3, wobei mindestens eine der Trennwände (7; 107) einen Schlitz (71; 171) umfasst, durch den sich die andere Trennwand (8; 108) erstreckt.

5. Karton (1, 100) nach Anspruch 4, wobei jede der Trennwände (7, 8; 107, 108) einen Schlitz (71, 81; 171, 181) umfasst, durch den sich die andere Trennwand erstreckt.

6. Karton (1) nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, umfassend einen Einsatz (10), der in dem Innenvolumen (V) aufgenommen wird und obere und untere Kammern beschreibt, wobei der Einsatz (10) eine Vielzahl von Aufnahmen (11) zum Aufnehmen von Artikeln aufweist.

7. Karton (1) nach Anspruch 6, wobei die Trennwände (7, 8) eine Vielzahl von Kammern beschreiben, von denen jede eine der Aufnahmen (11) umfasst.

8. Karton (1) nach Anspruch 6 oder Anspruch 7, wobei mindestens eine der Trennwände (7, 8) an dem Einsatz (10) anliegt.

9. Karton (100) nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, wobei mindestens eine der Trennwände (107, 108) an einer Bodenwand (104) des Kartons (100) anliegt.

10. Verpackung, umfassend einen Karton (1, 100) nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche mit einer Vielzahl von darin aufgenommenen Tiernahrung enthaltenden Schalen, wobei mindestens zwei der Schalen durch eine der Trennwände (7, 8; 107, 108) getrennt sind.

11. Zuschnitt zum Bilden eines Kartons (1, 100) mit einem Innenvolumen (V), wobei der Zuschnitt eine Vielzahl von Wänden umfasst, die gelenkig miteinander verbunden sind und einschließend:

ein Paar von Seitenwänden (21, 22; 121, 122);

ein Paar von Endwänden (31, 32; 131, 132), die gelenkig mit den Seitenwänden (21, 22; 121, 122) verbunden sind;

eine erste obere Wand (5; 105), die gelenkig mit einer der Seitenwände (21, 22; 121, 122) verbunden ist;

eine zweite obere Wand (6; 106), die gelenkig mit einer der Endwände (31, 32; 131, 132) verbunden ist; und

eine Deckelwand (9b; 109b), die gelenkig mit der anderen der Seitenwände (21, 22; 121 122) oder mit der anderen der Endwände (31, 32; 131, 132) verbunden ist und über der ersten und zweiten oberen Wand (5, 6; 105, 106) liegt;

wobei jede obere Wand (5, 6; 105, 106) eine jeweilige Trennwand (7, 8; 107, 108) aufweist, die gelenkig damit verbunden ist, und sich die Trennwände (7, 8; 107, 108) im Gebrauch in das Innenvolumen (V) erstrecken, orthogonal zueinander sind und miteinander in Eingriff stehen, um das Innenvolumen (V) des Kartons (1, 100) aufzuteilen.

12. Zuschnitt nach Anspruch 11, wobei die Deckelwand (9b; 109b) eine Verriegelungslasche (91b; 191b) zum Eingriff mit einer der oberen Wände (5, 6; 105, 106) umfasst, wobei die Deckelwand (9b; 109b) konfiguriert ist, um das gesamte Innenvolumen (V) des Kartons (1, 100) abzudecken.

13. Zuschnitt nach Anspruch 11 oder Anspruch 12, wobei eine der oberen Wände (5; 105) einen Schlitz (51; 151) umfasst, um im Gebrauch die Trennwand (8; 108) aufzunehmen, die gelenkig mit der anderen der oberen Wände (6; 106) verbunden ist, um die Trennwände (7, 8; 107, 108) miteinander in Eingriff zu bringen.

14. Zuschnitt nach Anspruch 13, wobei eine oder beide Trennwände (7, 8; 107, 108) einen Schlitz (71; 171) zum Aufnehmen der anderen Trennwand (8; 108) im Gebrauch umfassen.

15. Zuschnitt nach einem der Ansprüche 11 bis 14 in Kombination mit einem Einsatz (10) zum Beschreiben oberer und unterer Kammern innerhalb des Innenvolumens (V), wobei der Einsatz (10) eine Vielzahl von Aufnahmen (11) zum Aufnehmen von Artikeln umfasst.

un second panneau supérieur (6 ; 106) raccordé de manière articulée à l'un des panneaux d'extrémité (31, 32 ; 131, 132) ; et

un panneau de couvercle (9b ; 109b) raccordé de manière articulée à l'autre des panneaux latéraux (21, 22 ; 121, 122) ou à l'autre des panneaux d'extrémité (31, 32 ; 131, 132) et chevauchant les premier et second panneaux supérieurs (5, 6 ; 105, 106) ;

chaque panneau supérieur (5, 6 ; 105, 106) possédant un panneau de séparation respectif (7, 8 ; 107, 108), qui lui est raccordé de manière articulée, et lesdits panneaux de séparation (7, 8 ; 107, 108) s'étendant dans le volume interne (V), étant orthogonaux les uns aux autres et s'emboîtant les uns dans les autres pour cloisonner le volume interne (V) du carton (1, 100).

2. Carton (1, 100) selon la revendication 1, ledit panneau de couvercle (9b ; 109b) comprenant une languette de verrouillage (91b ; 191b) destinée à mettre en prise l'un des panneaux supérieurs (5, 6 ; 105, 106), le panneau de couvercle (9b ; 109b) étant conçu pour couvrir tout le volume interne (V) du carton (1, 100).

3. Carton (1, 100) selon la revendication 1 ou la revendication 2, l'un des premier et second panneaux supérieurs (5 ; 105) comprenant une fente (51 ; 151) à travers laquelle le panneau de séparation (8 ; 108) raccordé de manière articulée à l'autre des premier et second panneaux supérieurs (6 ; 106) s'étend pour s'emboîter avec les panneaux de séparation (7, 8 ; 107, 108).

4. Carton (1, 100) selon la revendication 3, au moins l'un des panneaux de séparation (7 ; 107) comprenant une fente (71 ; 171) à travers laquelle s'étend l'autre panneau de séparation (8 ; 108).

5. Carton (1, 100) selon la revendication 4, chacun des panneaux de séparation (7, 8 ; 107, 108) comprenant une fente (71, 81 ; 171, 181) à travers laquelle s'étend l'autre panneau de séparation.

6. Carton (1) selon une quelconque revendication précédente comprenant un insert (10) reçu
à l'intérieur du volume interne (V) et définissant des chambres supérieure et inférieure, l'insert (10) possédant une pluralité de réceptacles (11) destinés à recevoir des articles.

7. Carton (1) selon la revendication 6, lesdits panneaux de séparation (7, 8) définissant une pluralité de chambres comprenant chacune l'un des réceptacles (11).

8. Carton (1) selon la revendication 6 ou la revendication 7, au moins l'un des panneaux de séparation (7, 8) venant en butée contre l'insert (10).

9. Carton (100) selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 5, au moins l'un des panneaux de séparation (107, 108) venant en butée contre un panneau inférieur (104) du carton (100).

10. Emballage comprenant un carton (1, 100) selon une quelconque revendication précédente avec une pluralité de plateaux contenant des aliments pour animaux de compagnie reçus à l'intérieur de ceux-ci, au moins deux des plateaux étant séparés par l'un des panneaux de séparation (7, 8 ; 107, 108).

11. Découpe destinée à former un carton (1, 100) possédant un volume interne (V), la découpe comprenant une pluralité de panneaux raccordés de manière articulée les uns aux autres et comprenant :

une paire de panneaux latéraux (21, 22 ; 121, 122) ;

une paire de panneaux d'extrémité (31, 32 ; 131, 132) raccordés de manière articulée aux panneaux latéraux (21, 22 ; 121, 122) ;

un premier panneau supérieur (5 ; 105) raccordé de manière articulée à l'un des panneaux latéraux (21, 22; 121, 122) ;

un second panneau supérieur (6 ; 106) raccordé de manière articulée à l'un des panneaux d'extrémité (31, 32 ; 131, 132) ; et

un panneau de couvercle (9b ; 109b) raccordé de manière articulée à l'autre des panneaux latéraux (21, 22 ; 121, 122) ou à l'autre

des panneaux d'extrémité (31, 32 ; 131, 132) et chevauchant les premier et second panneaux supérieurs (5, 6 ; 105, 106) ;

chaque panneau supérieur (5, 6 ; 105, 106) possédant un panneau de séparation respectif (7, 8 ; 107, 108), qui lui est raccordé de manière articulée, et lesdits panneaux de séparation (7, 8 ; 107, 108) s'étendant, lors de l'utilisation, dans le volume interne (V), étant orthogonaux les uns aux autres et s'emboîtant les uns dans les autres pour cloisonner le volume interne (V) du carton (1, 100).

12. Découpe selon la revendication 11, ledit panneau de couvercle (9b ; 109b) comprenant une languette de verrouillage (91b ; 191b) destinée à se mettre en prise avec l'un des panneaux supérieurs (5, 6 ; 105, 106), le panneau de couvercle (9b ; 109b) étant conçu pour couvrir tout le volume interne (V) du carton (1, 100).

13. Découpe selon la revendication 11 ou la revendication 12, l'un des panneaux supérieurs (5 ; 105) comprenant une fente (51 ; 151) destinée à recevoir, lors de l'utilisation, ledit panneau de séparation (8 ; 108) raccordé de manière articulée à l'autre des panneaux supérieurs (6 ; 106) pour emboîter les panneaux de séparation (7, 8 ; 107, 108).

14. Découpe selon la revendication 13, un ou les deux panneaux de séparation (7, 8 ; 107, 108) comprenant une fente (71 ; 171) destinée à recevoir, lors de l'utilisation, l'autre panneau de séparation (8 ; 108).

15. Découpe selon l'une quelconque des revendications 11 à 14 en combinaison avec un insert (10) pour définir des chambres supérieures et inférieures à l'intérieur du volume interne (V), l'insert (10) comprenant une pluralité de réceptacles (11) destinés à recevoir des articles.
