BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a device for drawing lines in general in the fields
of construction, home improvement, DIY and the like.
[0002] The field of application of the present invention is that of creating straight and
circular lines for tracing, for example using a pencil, the edges or contours of doors,
windows, etc. on walls and the like.
[0003] In order to trace the edges and contours of doors and windows on walls at the present
time, a tape measure, a pencil, a colored chalk line, adhesive paper tape, a flexible
edge protector for arcs and a compass for circles are required at least.
[0004] With these tools, a first operator marks reference points for the tracing, while
a second operator helps the first operator by holding the colored chalk line under
tension so that it is kept straight.
[0005] To follow another procedure, the operator first marks the reference points of the
trace, then sticks an adhesive tape at a first point and then tensions the tape, with
the obvious risk of having to repeat this operation each time the tape comes off or
somehow loses its position.
[0006] To trace curved lines, at the present time it is necessary to have a flexible edge
protector, using two operators to hold the edge protector while a third person draws
the trace with the pencil.
[0007] The known solutions described above have the disadvantages of using multiple tools
(chalk line, edge protector, compass, adhesive tape, and more) and requiring several
people to coordinate use of the tools in drawing the traces with a pencil.
[0008] US4656744A describes a device for marking irregular lines on wall panels or the like, comprising
a bar and a slider adjustable thereon at given distances from the wall to be drawn
on.
[0009] WO2006/008758A1 describes a kind of perforated square that is supposed to help draw lines and points
on a surface to be machined.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0010] The main object of the present invention is to provide a simple tool with which to
realize, with precision and with just one operator, the traces of the contours of
doors, windows, etc.
[0011] This and other objects are achieved by the device of claim 1. Preferred embodiments
of the invention will be apparent from the remaining claims.
[0012] Compared with the known solutions described above, the device of the invention offers
the advantage of allowing to draw, quickly and easily and with just one operator,
the trace of the edges of walls, doors and windows, arched or circle-shaped edges,
with positive impacts on the speed and cost of the work and the equipment required.
[0013] Moreover, when the device of the invention is used as a handle for tools, such as
for example a paintbrush and the like, the latter are lighter and easier to handle
thanks to the presence of holes in the body of the handle.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0014] These and other objects, advantages and features will be apparent from the following
description of the device of the invention illustrated, by way of nonlimiting example,
in the figures of the attached drawings sheets.
[0015] In these:
- Figure 1 illustrates in perspective view an example of the device of the invention;
- Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the device of Figure 1, in use as a paintbrush handle viewed
from the two sides, respectively;
- Figures 4 and 5 illustrate the device of the preceding figures, viewed from the side
and in section, respectively;
- Figures 6 to 13 illustrate in perspective view the device of the preceding figures,
in the mode of use as paintbrush handle;
- Figures 14 and 15 illustrate the paintbrush of the preceding figures, hooked on to
the edge of a bucket.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0016] The device of the invention is indicated as a whole by the numeral 1 in Figure 1.
It consists of a body 2 having an elongated shape, in which a plurality of mutually
spaced through-holes 3 is provided, each suitable for accommodating the tip of a pencil
4 or other similar instrument, for drawing traces 11 of the edges of walls, doors,
windows, etc. (Figures 2 to 13).
[0017] A first end 5 of the body 2 is advantageously shaped as a hook and represents the
zero point for measurement of the distance between the holes 3. Preferably, this distance
is 1 cm and the first end 5 of the device 1 rests on the wall as the zero point. In
tracing the contours of doors and windows, the first end 5 also serves as a stabilizer
or guide to the stroke of the tip of the pencil 4.
[0018] In the embodiment shown in Figures 2 to 13, the body 2 of the device 1 is advantageously
used in the mode of handle of a paintbrush 6. In this case, bristles 8 of the paintbrush
6 used for color finishing are attached to a second end 7 of the body 2, opposite
the first hook-shaped end 5. The first hook-shaped end 5 can be used to hang the brush
6 on the edge of the bucket 9 of Figures 14 and 15.
[0019] Obviously, it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the use of
the device 1 as a handle for a paintbrush, the same device in fact being able to be
used effectively either alone or as a handle for other tools normally used by painters,
such as a palette knife and the like.
[0020] In the use depicted in Figures 7 through 9, the device of the invention, used as
a paintbrush handle, is employed to draw the external frames of doors and windows.
In this case, the first hook-shaped end 5 of the paintbrush handle 2 engages against
the edge of the shoulder 10 of the window or door. Then the hole 3 corresponding to
the position of the frame is chosen, the tip of the pencil 4 is inserted into this
hole, and finally the trace 11 of the frame is drawn by sliding the handle 2 in the
direction of the arrow F, using the hook 5 for guidance (Figure 7). The paintbrush
6 will then be used for the necessary color finishing touches.
[0021] Drawing of the internal frames, on the other hand, is performed in the way represented
in Figures 10 to 12, in which guidance for drawing of the trace 11, with the tip of
the pencil 4 inserted into the hole 3 corresponding to the desired distance, is provided
by the first hook-shaped end 5 of the paintbrush handle 2, this time laid simply on
the side walls or ceiling of the room and made slide in the direction of the arrows
F of the figures mentioned above.
[0022] The device of the invention also allows the circular traces 11 shown in Figure 13
to be drawn by pinning the handle 2 at a hole 30 thereof (with, e.g., a nail or similar),
then inserting the tip of the pencil into the hole 31 or 32 corresponding to the desired
distance of the trace 11 from the hole 30 acting as a pivot, and then rotating the
handle 2 around this pivot in the direction of the arrow F, in the same way as a compass.
[0023] Modifications can be made to the invention, as described above and illustrated in
the attached figures, in order to produce further variants.
[0024] Thus, for example, in place of the bristles 8, a palette knife or other instrument
used in the construction, home improvement, DIY and similar sectors could be applied.
