[0001] The present invention relates to a method for the application onto an underground
of a guide marking for the blind and visually impaired, whereby use is made of guidelines
and/or burls and /or such like, these being pre-formed from a plastic, which at the
bottom side are provided with an adhesive strip.
[0002] Such a method is known.
[0003] With the known method the preformed guidelines and/or burls and /or such like, together
hereinafter also referred to as guidelines, are made from a plastic, more in particular
a thermoplastic, more in particular from a PE.
[0004] The guidelines or burls have a height of for instance 1 to 5 mm.
[0005] At the bottom side of the guidelines a tape is provided which at the upper side and
at the bottom side is provided with an adhesive strip. The guidelines are at their
bottom side partly or completely adhered onto the adhesive strip at the upper side
of the tape. The adhesive strip at the bottom side of the tape completely or partly
is provided with a protective sheet, for instance a siliconized paper, that, when
the guidelines have to be applied to the floor, is taken away. Thereby the adhesive
strip gets free and the guidelines can be attached to the floor.
[0006] The known marking is also applied in buildings end events where the marking only
has to have a temporary nature. It then is the intention that after a while, for instance
after the finish of the event, the guidelines are removed again.
[0007] A drawback of the known method is that in practice it appears to be very difficult
to remove the guidelines completely from the floor.
[0008] Often a part of the tape or the adhesive layer stays stuck on to the underground.
Also it happens that with the removal of the marking a (top) layer of the floor comes
along. The floor then gets damaged.
[0009] This is connected with the fact that the adhesive strip at the bottom side of the
tape has an adhesive force that is too strong. In practice one has tried to solve
this by providing the bottom side of the tape with an adhesive strip with an adhesive
force that is less strong.
[0010] This however has the drawback that the guidelines and the burls are then not tightly
enough attached to the floor and get loose during use, for instance by pounding and
such like when these are being walked over.
[0011] It is an object of the present invention to obviate this drawback.
[0012] The method according to the invention thereto is characterized, in that use is made
of a foil which at a bottom side completely or partly is provided with a self-adhesive
layer, by means of which self-adhesive layer the foil is applied onto the underground,
and whereby the guidelines and/or burls and/or such by means of the adhesive strip
are applied onto the upper side of the foil.
[0013] According to a characteristic of the method according to the invention the foil has
elastic or flexible properties.
[0014] According to a further characteristic of the method according to the invention the
foil is a flexible polymer vinyl foil.
[0015] According to another characteristic of the method according to the invention the
foil is a calandered, polymer plasticized PVC vinyl foil.
[0016] According to a further characteristic of the method according to the invention the
self-adhesive layer is formed by a permanent acrylic glueing on solvent basis.
[0017] According to a further characteristic of the method according to the invention the
composition of the glue of the self-adhesive layer is formed by a solvent based acrylate.
[0018] According to yet a further characteristic of the method according to the invention
the adhesive strength of the self-adhesive layer is 20N/25mm.
[0019] According to a further characteristic of the method according to the invention, the
foil has a thickness between approximately 40 µ and 160 µ, whereby this according
to a further characteristic has a thickness between approximately 50 µ and 150 µ,
and according to yet another characteristic has a thickness between approximately
60 µ and 140 µ.
[0020] According to another characteristic of the method according to the invention the
foil has a thickness of approximately 130 µ.
[0021] According to another characteristic of the method according to the invention the
foil has a thickness of approximately 66 µ.
[0022] Further characteristics and particulars will be described with reference to the drawings
of an example of an embodiment.
Figure 1 shows a side view of burls that have been applied to a floor according to
the known method.
Figure 2 shows a side view, taken apart, of burls that have been applied to a floor
with the method according to the invention.
Figure 3 shows a side view according to figure 2, not taken apart.
Figure 4 shows a perspective view of a pattern between two sheets of protection paper
as this can be used in the method according to the invention.
[0023] As can be seen in figure 1, with the known method, use is made of, in this example
of an embodiment, pre-formed burls 1 of plastic, more in particular a PE. The burls
1 at the bottom side 2 are provided with a tape 3 that at the upper side 4 is provided
with an upper adhesive strip 5 and at the bottom side 6 is provided with a bottom
adhesive strip 7. In the figure is shown that the burls 1 with their bottom side 2
are adhered to the upper adhesive strip 4. The bottom adhesive strip 7 normally is
provided with a protection sheet, such as a siliconized paper.
[0024] In the example shown in figure 1 the protection sheet has already been taken off,
and the burls 1 have been adhered to the floor 8 by means of the exposed bottom adhesive
strip 7.
[0025] In the figures 2 and 3 the method according to the invention is shown.
[0026] The burls as described in figure 1 are not adhered directly to the floor by means
of the bottom adhesive strip 7. First use is made of a foil 9, which at the bottom
side 10 is provided with a self-adhesive bottom layer 11. The foil has the same contour
form as the burls. Obviously, the contour of the foil is adapted to the desired marking;
when it concerns guidelines the foil has the contour form of a line. Underneath the
self-adhesive bottom layer 11 a protection paper, such as a siliconized sheet, can
be provided (not shown in the figures). Before the use this protection paper is removed.
The foil 9 is attached to the floor by means of the self-adhesive layer 11, as shown
in figure 3. After that onto the foil a burl is attached.
[0027] Use can also be made of a foil 9 consisting of a vinyl which at the bottom side 10
has a self-adhesive layer 11 formed by a glue of a synthetic rubber type.
[0028] In the example of an embodiment shown the foil 11 is a foil with elastic, or flexible,
or shock absorbing properties. The foil may be a flexible polymer vinyl foil. Further
this foil may be a calandered, polymer plasticized PVC vinyl foil.
[0029] The self-adhesive bottom layer 11 can be formed by a permanent acrylic glueing on
solvent basis, whereby the adhesive strength of the self-adhesive bottom layer 11
may be 20N/25mm.
[0030] In practice a foil such as this is marketed by the firm Mactac under the brand name
MaCal 9800 Pro meets the requirements well (

- Leading Brands for Graphic Solutions).
[0031] Also a foil such as this is marketed by the firm 3M under the product description
"3M 471 Plastic Film Tape" (Product Data Sheet March 1996) proves to meet the requirements
well.
[0032] Also a foil such as this is marketed by the firm Mactac under the brand name JT 9300
WG-PT proves - for short period projects - to meet the requirements well.
[0033] As can be seen in figure 4 with the method use can be made of a template 12 consisting
of two sheets 13, 14 between which the foil 9 in the form of stickers 9 is provided
in a pattern according to a desired marking. In the example of an embodiment shown
the pattern and therewith the desired marking is made up of a number of pieces of
foil 9 placed in parallel rows, each piece of foil 9 having a round shape that corresponds
to the bottom side of the burls 1. The pattern has a contour form in the shape of
a square. Any other pattern is possible, and instead of stickers in the form of burls
also stickers in the form of guidelines, etcetera, can be provided between the sheets.
Thereby it is favourable to carry out the contour form of the foil a fraction smaller
than the marking.
[0034] According to the method the sticker template 12 with the pattern is laid down on
the floor at the desired position. The template 12 is attached at one side, for instance
with sticky tape. Then the template is folded over, so that the other sheet lies up.
This sheet is removed as a result of which the self-adhesive layer comes to lie bare.
After that the sheet is folded back again, with the self-adhesive layer pointing downwards,
and the stickers are rubbed tight against the floor. The other sheet is removed and
the stickers with the foil at the upper side now lie bare. After that the plastic
burls are attached onto the stickers (figures 2 and 3).
[0035] After the project or the event the burls including the stickers can be removed easily
and clean from the underground.
[0036] If so desired instead of burls made of a plastic also burls that are made from another
material or combination of materials may be applied, for instance wood, or a metal,
such as aluminium or stainless steel.
[0037] It is also possible, with the method, to make use of a cardboard or plastic template
with openings, in which openings pieces of foil are positioned one by one, for instance
by hand, with the self-adhesive layer onto the underground, such as a floor, and after
which the burls are attached onto the foil.
[0038] Further it is possible, with the application of the marking, to make use of burls
or guidelines or such like, which have already beforehand been provided onto a piece
of foil, and to attach this combination of the foil with the burls thereon onto the
underground by means of the self-adhesive layer provided to the foil.
[0039] If so desired, in the view of re-use, instead of a foil with on one side a self-adhesive
layer, one can also think of a double-sided adhesive foil.
