[0001] The invention relates to a marking fixture for marking off holes on a door.
BACKGROUND
[0002] In Europe and many other parts of the world, doors, especially wooden doors, are
often provided with an insert lock. An insert lock is a lock that is fastened in a
recess on an end side of a door. Once the insert lock has been mounted in the door,
there are, on one or both main surfaces of the door, one or more holes for passing
therethrough a door handle and possibly a lock cylinder, a WC latch or a bathroom
latch. New doors in which no insert lock has been mounted yet are often already provided
with a relatively deep insert lock recess for therein arranging an insert lock. In
most cases, the insert lock is also provided with a so-called faceplate. The faceplate
is then received in a relatively shallow faceplate recess in the end side of the door,
into which the faceplate fits accurately. The depth of the faceplate recess substantially
corresponds to the thickness of the faceplate and, likewise, the contours of the faceplate
recess substantially correspond to the contours of the faceplate. Also the faceplate
recess is already present in a new door when it is purchased from a door supplier.
However, the hole or holes mentioned above are not yet present in a new door in which
the insert lock is still to be fitted, because the position of these holes depends
on the type of insert lock that is to be placed. Such a door is described in
DE3114336.
[0003] When mounting an insert lock in the recess of such a door, the skilled worker needs
to drill a hole for the door handle in one or both main surfaces of the door. Where
applicable, also a lock cylinder hole or a hole for the purpose of a WC latch or bathroom
latch needs to be drilled.
[0004] DE3114336A1 also describes, in addition to the door, a drilling jig to be supplied with that
door, which can be helpful in providing the earlier-mentioned holes in the door. The
known drilling jig is only suitable for the door described in that same publication.
[0005] DE440516C describes a marking fixture for marking the positions of keyholes that are to be
drilled in a door in one or both main surfaces of the door.
DE440516C shows the measures from the pre-characterizing portion of claim 1.
SUMMARY
[0006] It is known that doors of different types are available. For example, square edge
doors and lipped doors are known. Apart from the height and the width of the known
doors, also the thicknesses of doors can vary. As a consequence, the distance from
the insert lock recess to both main surfaces of the various doors can be different.
In the case of a square edge door, that is, a door falling in its entirety into a
door case, the recess is typically in the middle of the end side, that is, centrally
between both main surfaces of the door. In the case of a lipped door, that is, a door
having a lipped edge overlapping the door case, the recess is usually positioned eccentrically
relative to a median plane extending centrally between and parallel to both main surfaces
of the door.
[0007] There is therefore a need for a marking fixture that is suitable for use with different
doors having different thicknesses, and that can be used with both square edge doors
and lipped doors.
[0008] To that end, the invention provides a marking fixture for marking positions of drill
holes on a door, wherein the door in its end side is provided with a recess for an
insert lock and a recess for a faceplate of the insert lock, wherein the marking fixture
comprises:
an L-shaped profile part including a short leg intended for abutment against the end
side of the door and a long leg intended for abutment against a main surface of the
door, wherein the long leg is provided with at least one marking opening for marking
a position of a drill hole; and
a fitted plate which with an adjustable connection is connected with the short leg
and which is fittingly receivable in the recess for the faceplate, wherein the adjustable
connection exclusively allows displacement of the fitted plate in a direction perpendicular
to the long leg. The adjustable connection between the fitted plate and the short
leg of the L-shaped profile part makes it possible to use the marking fixture with
doors of different thicknesses, and with both square edge doors and lipped doors,
where the recess is provided centrally or eccentrically in the door. By receiving
the fitted plate in the recess for the faceplate, the position of the fitted plate
relative to the recess is determined and known. Due to the adjustable connection allowing
only displacement of the fitted plate in a direction perpendicular to the long leg,
the vertical position, with a standing door, of the short leg and hence the L-shaped
profile part, is determined and known. This means that the vertical position of the
long leg of the L-shaped profile relative to the recess is known. The marking opening
is then, relative to the recess, provided such that it accurately indicates the hole
to be formed for a door handle, the lock cylinder, the WC latch or the bathroom latch.
[0009] In an embodiment, the at least one marking opening comprises a first handle hole
marking opening intended for marking a handle hole position on a first main surface
of the door.
[0010] In a further embodiment, the at least one marking opening comprises a second handle
hole marking opening intended for marking a handle hole position on a second main
surface of the door, wherein the second main surface is located opposite the first
main surface of the door. The first main surface is, for instance, the left main surface
of the door as viewed from the end side of the door, while the second main surface
is then the right main surface of the door as viewed from the end side of the door.
The marking fixture can be used for both main surfaces. A side which, in use, forms
a bottom side of the marking fixture if the long leg in a first work position abuts
against the first main surface, will form an upper side of the marking fixture if
the long leg in a second work position abuts against the second main surface. For
both work positions of the marking fixture, in this embodiment, the marking fixture
is provided with a handle hole marking opening.
[0011] In an embodiment, the at least one marking opening also comprises a first lock cylinder
hole marking opening intended for marking a lock cylinder hole position on the first
main surface of the door. In a further embodiment, the at least one marking opening
comprises a second lock cylinder hole marking opening intended for marking a lock
cylinder hole position on the second main surface of the door.
[0012] In an embodiment, the adjustable connection comprises two parallel slotted holes
in the short leg, which slotted holes each have a length and a width and each extend
in a length direction which extends perpendicular to the long leg, wherein the length
of each slotted hole is greater than the width thereof, wherein the adjustable connection
comprises for each slotted hole an associated set pin, a diameter of which substantially
corresponds to the width of the slotted holes. The set pins are for instance attached
to the fitted plate and extend through the associated slotted holes. Such a pin-in-slotted
hole connection makes movement of the fitted plate relative to the short leg in the
length direction of the slotted holes possible. This makes it possible to adjust a
distance between the fitted plate and the long leg to a distance between the recess
and the main surface of the door against which the long leg abuts. Because the length
direction of the slotted holes is perpendicular to the long leg, the displacement
of the fitted plate relative to the short leg is exclusively possible in a direction
perpendicular to the long leg. This ensures that the vertical position of the long
leg, having therein the at least one marking opening, relative to the vertical position
of the recess for the fitted plate remains equal.
[0013] In an embodiment, each set pin is implemented as a set screw, where in a non-tightened
state of the set screws the fitted plate is slidable in the length direction of the
slotted holes relative to the short leg and in a tightened state of the set screws
is fixed relative to the short leg. In non-tightened state, the distance between the
fitted plate and the long leg can be tuned to the distance between the recess and
the main surface of the door against which the long leg abuts. In tightened state,
this distance can be fixed, as a result of which the marking fixture is positioned
in a stable manner relative to the door and the chances of unintended shifting is
minimized. This guarantees that the marking of the position of a drill hole is realized
on the main surface in the proper manner.
[0014] In an embodiment, the L-shaped profile is manufactured of metal, such as aluminium
or stainless steel. A metal marking fixture is robust and strong and can be reused
many times when it is part of a carpenter's tool set.
[0015] In an embodiment, in a first work position of the marking fixture the long leg abuts
against a first main surface of the door, wherein the L-shaped profile part is provided
with first signs which indicate for the first work position of the marking fixture
which marking opening or marking openings of the at least one marking opening in the
first work position are intended for marking the position of the drill hole. The signs
can be provided on the long leg, next to the respective marking opening or marking
openings. Also, it is possible to place the signs on the short leg.
[0016] In an embodiment, in a second work position of the marking fixture the long leg abuts
against a second main surface of the door, wherein the second main surface is located
opposite the first main surface, and wherein the L-shaped profile part is provided
with second signs which indicate for the second work position of the marking fixture
which marking opening or which marking openings of the at least one marking opening
in the second work position are intended for marking the position of the drill hole.
[0017] When the marking fixture is for instance in the first work position, and when the
first signs are, for example, letters and/or numerals, in this embodiment the first
signs can be readable and the second signs are upside-down. When the marking fixture
is in the second work position, the second signs are readable and the first signs
are upside-down.
[0018] In an embodiment, the first and/or second signs comprise information about a diameter
of the associated drill hole. The signs can for instance comprise a text, such as
12 mm.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0021] In the following detailed description of the figures, with the aid of reference numerals,
reference is made to the example that is represented in the figures. The embodiments
that are described in the detailed description, however, are not limited to the example
that is shown in the figures but may also be implemented in a different way than shown
in the example. The embodiments described in the detailed description should therefore
be read and understood also without the reference numerals. The various embodiments
to be described hereinafter can be used in combination with each other or independently
of each other.
[0022] Most generally, as shown in Figs. 1-6, 9, 10, and 14, the invention provides a marking
fixture 10 for marking positions 24, 30 of drill holes on a door 70. Examples of doors
are shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 11-13. The door is provided in its end side 72 with a
recess 74 for an insert lock and a recess 76 for a faceplate of the insert lock. The
details represented in Figs. 8 and 13 show an enlargement of these recesses 74, 76.
In the case of a square edge door, an example of which is shown in Figs. 7 and 8,
the recess 74 is mostly positioned in the middle of the end side 72, that is, centrally
between the two main surfaces 78, 80 of the door 70. In the case of a lipped door,
an example of which is shown in Figs. 11-13, the recess 74 is next to the lipped edge
82, in consequence of which it is eccentrically positioned relative to a median plane
extending centrally between, and parallel to, the two main surfaces 78, 80 of the
door 70.
[0023] The marking fixture 10 comprises an L-shaped profile part 12 and a fitted plate 18.
The L-shaped profile part 12 comprises a short leg 14 which is intended for abutment
against the end side 72 of the door 70 and a long leg 16 which is intended for abutment
against a main surface 78, 80 of the door 70. The long leg 16 can abut against a first
main surface 78, but the long leg 16 can also abut against a second main surface 80,
where the second main surface 80 is located opposite the first main surface 78 of
the door 70. The long leg 16 can for instance abut against the first, for example
a left, main surface 78, as is shown in Figs. 10 and 14. However, the long leg 16
can also abut against the second, for example a right, main surface 80, as is shown
in Fig. 9. The long leg 16 is provided with at least one marking opening 22, 26, 28,
32 for marking a position 24, 30 of a drill hole. The fitted plate 18 is connected
to the short leg 14 with an adjustable connection 20 and is fittingly receivable in
the recess 76 for the faceplate. The adjustable connection 20 exclusively allows displacement
of the fitted plate 18 in a direction perpendicular to the long leg 16. Upon attachment
of the marking fixture 10 to the door 70, the fitting reception of the fitted plate
18 in the recess 76 for the faceplate ensures that the position of the fitted plate
18 relative to the door 70 is determined. Due to this fixed position of the fitted
plate 18, the vertical position of the marking fixture 10 relative to the recess 74
is aligned. Because the marking fixture 10 is provided with the adjustable connection
20, the marking fixture 10 can be used with doors 70 of different thicknesses, and
with both square edge doors 70 and lipped doors 70, where the recess is provided centrically
or eccentrically relative to the main surfaces of the door.
[0024] As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 10 and 14, the at least one marking opening 22,
26, 28, 32 of the example comprises a first handle hole marking opening 22 intended
for marking of a handle hole position 24 on the first main surface 78 of the door
70, and a second handle hole marking opening 26 intended for marking of a handle hole
position 24 on the second main surface 80 of the door 70. The at least one marking
opening 22, 26, 28, 32 further comprises a first lock cylinder hole marking opening
28 intended for marking of a lock cylinder hole position 30 on the first main surface
78 of the door 70, and a second lock cylinder hole marking opening 32 intended for
marking of a lock cylinder hole position 30 on the second main surface 80 of the door
70.
[0025] As can be seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 10, the adjustable connection 20 of the example
comprises two parallel slotted holes 34, 36 in the short leg 14. Each of these slotted
holes 34, 36 has a length and a width and each extends in a length direction that
extends perpendicular to the long leg 16. The length of each slotted hole 34, 36 is
greater than the width thereof. The adjustable connection 20 comprises for each slotted
hole 34, 36 an associated set pin 38, a diameter of which substantially corresponds
to the width of the slotted holes 34, 36. In the example that is represented in the
figures, each set pin 38 is implemented as a set screw 38, where in a non-tightened
state of the set screws 38 the fitted plate 18 is movable relative to the short leg
14 in the length direction of the slotted holes 34, 36 and in a tightened state of
the set screws 38 is fixed relative to the short leg 14. In the example shown, the
adjustable connection 20 further comprises a set screw sleeve 39 with a rotary knob.
The set screw sleeve 39 is provided with inner thread which engages the set screw
38. By manually engaging the rotary knob and thereby tightening the set screw sleeve
39, the fitted plate 18 is pressed and fixed against the short leg 14 by the assembly
of set screw 38 and set screw sleeve 39. Instead of making use of a set screw sleeve
39, it is for instance also possible to use a set screw 38 which extends through the
slotted hole 34, 36 and which engages in a threaded screw opening in the fitted plate
22. Due to the set screw 38 being displaceable in the slotted hole, it is possible
to vary the distance between the fitted plate 22 and the long leg 16. Figs. 2 and
3 show a distance between the fitted plate 22 and the long leg 16 that is greater
than the distance between the fitted plate 22 and the long leg 16 that is shown in
Figs. 4 and 5. Due to this adjustability, the marking fixture 10 can be used on doors
70 of different thicknesses, and on doors 70 having a different placement of the recess
74 for the insert lock, as on square edge doors 70 and lipped doors 70.
[0026] Preferably, the L-shaped profile 12 is manufactured of metal, such as aluminium or
stainless steel. A marking fixture 10 that has been manufactured thereof can be reused
many times. Also, the marking fixture 10, or in any case the L-shaped profile 12,
will not corrode, at least, not quickly so. For that matter, the invention does not
exclude an alternative embodiment where the marking fixture is manufactured from plastic.
Especially for the private market, such an implementation in plastic can be favorable
with regard to the costs.
[0027] The marking fixture 10 can be held against the door 70 in two work positions. In
a first work position of the marking fixture 10, as shown in Figs. 10 and 14, the
long leg 16 abuts against the first main surface 78 of the door 70. The L-shaped profile
part 12 is provided with first signs 40 which indicate for the first work position
of the marking fixture 10 which marking opening 22, 26, 28, 32 or marking openings
22, 26, 28, 32 of the at least one marking opening 22, 26, 28, 32 in the first work
position are intended for marking of the position 24, 30 of the drill hole. In a second
work position of the marking fixture 10, as shown in Fig. 9, the long leg 16 abuts
against the second main surface 80 of the door 70. The L-shaped profile part 12 is
provided with second signs 42 which indicate for the second work position of the marking
fixture 10 which marking opening 22, 26, 28, 32 or marking openings 22, 26, 28, 32
of the at least one marking opening 22, 26, 28, 32 in the second work position are
intended for marking of the position 24, 30 of the drill hole. The example of Fig.
6 shows a marking fixture 10 which is in the first work position. In the example shown,
the first and second signs 40, 42 comprise a text, which is readable in the associated
work position. Readable means that the text is upright and not upside down. In Fig.
6 it can be seen that the first and second signs 40, 42 comprise numerals and letters
with information about a diameter of the associated drill hole 24, 30. Next to the
first handle hole marking opening 22 it reads, for instance, 20 mm. This means that
at the indicated handle hole position 24 a hole of a diameter of 20 mm needs to be
drilled. In the same way, the first and second signs 40, 42 give information about
the diameter of the holes to be drilled at the position 24, 30 of the marking openings
22, 26, 28, 32.
[0028] Fig. 15 shows a second embodiment of the L-shaped profile part, where each marking
opening 22, 26, 28, 32 is built up from three sub-openings, viz., a small central
opening, with which the position where the drill point must be placed on the door
can be accurately marked, and two peripheral openings which describe the outer circumference
of the recesses to be provided in the door. With this second embodiment, marking of
the position where the drill point needs to be placed on the door is rendered a bit
simpler and/or more accurate than with the L-shaped profile 12 that is shown in Figs.
1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 10 and 14.

1. A marking fixture (10) for marking positions (24, 30) of drill holes on a door (70),
wherein the door in its end side (72) is provided with a recess (74) for an insert
lock and a recess (76) for a faceplate of the insert lock, wherein the marking fixture
(10) comprises:
- an L-shaped profile part (12) comprising a short leg (14) intended for abutment
against the end side (72) of the door (70) and a long leg (16) intended for abutment
against a main surface (78, 80) of the door (70); and
- a fitted plate (18) which with an adjustable connection (20) is connected with the
short leg (14) and which is fittingly receivable in the recess (76) for the faceplate,
characterized in that the long leg (16) is provided with at least one marking opening (22, 26, 28, 32)
for marking a position (24, 30) of a drill hole, wherein the adjustable connection
(20) exclusively allows displacement of the fitted plate (18) in a direction perpendicular
to the long leg (16).
2. The marking fixture according to claim 1, wherein the at least one marking opening
(22, 26, 28, 32) comprises a first handle hole marking opening (22) intended for marking
a handle hole position (24) on a first main surface (78) of the door (70).
3. The marking fixture according to claim 2, wherein the at least one marking opening
(22, 26, 28, 32) comprises a second handle hole marking opening (26) intended for
marking a handle hole position (24) on a second main surface (80) of the door (70),
wherein the second main surface (80) is located opposite the first main surface (78)
of the door (70).
4. The marking fixture according to claim 2 or 3, wherein the at least one marking opening
(22, 26, 28, 32) further comprises a first lock cylinder hole marking opening (28)
intended for marking a lock cylinder hole position (30) on the first main surface
(78) of the door (70).
5. The marking fixture according to claim 3 and 4, wherein the at least one marking opening
(22, 26, 28, 32) comprises a second lock cylinder hole marking opening (32) intended
for marking a lock cylinder hole position (30) on the second main surface (80) of
the door (70).
6. The marking fixture according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the adjustable
connection (20) comprises two parallel slotted holes (34, 36) in the short leg (14),
which slotted holes (34, 36) each have a length and a width and each extend in a length
direction which extends perpendicular to the long leg (16), wherein the length of
each slotted hole (34, 36) is greater than the width thereof, wherein the adjustable
connection (20) comprises for each slotted hole (34, 36) an associated set pin (38),
a diameter of which substantially corresponds to the width of the slotted holes (34,
36).
7. The marking fixture according to claim 6, wherein each set pin (38) is implemented
as a set screw (38), wherein in a non-tightened state of the set screws (38) the fitted
plate (18) is movable relative to the short leg (14) in length direction of the slotted
holes and in a tightened state of the set screws (38) is fixed relative to the short
leg (14).
8. The marking fixture according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the L-shaped
profile part (12) is manufactured of metal, such as aluminium or stainless steel.
9. The marking fixture according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein in a first
work position of the marking fixture (10) the long leg (16) abuts against a first
main surface (78) of the door (70), and wherein the L-shaped profile part (12) is
provided with first signs (40) which indicate for the first work position of the marking
fixture (10) which marking opening or marking openings of the at least one marking
opening (22, 26, 28, 32) in the first work position are intended for marking the position
(24, 30) of the drill hole.
10. The marking fixture according to claim 9, wherein in a second work position of the
marking fixture (10) the long leg (16) abuts against a second main surface (80) of
the door (70), wherein the second main surface (80) is located opposite the first
main surface (78) of the door (70), and wherein the L-shaped profile part (12) is
provided with second signs (42) which indicate for the second work position of the
marking fixture (10) which marking opening or marking openings of the at least one
marking opening (22, 26, 28, 32) in the second work position are intended for marking
the position (24, 30) of the drill hole.
11. The marking fixture according to claim 9 or 10, wherein the first and/or second signs
(40, 42) comprise information about a diameter of the associated drill hole (24, 30).
