FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a solid detergent cleaning composition comprising
coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles and a detergent ingredient. The compositions
have good performance and stability profiles, and the coloured fabric hueing dye agent
particles do not readily bleed.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Laundry detergent manufacturers need to provide a product that has good performance
and good stability profiles. The manufacturers typically incorporate numerous chemistries
to provide the good performance profile. Where possible, these chemistries are often
formulated into a base particle, such as a spray-dried particle or an agglomerate
along with significant amounts of ingredients such as detersive surfactant. However,
some chemistries, are formulated into the their own dedicated particle. This is typically
because these chemistries are not formulated into every one of the manufacturers products.
By having separate particles of these chemistries, it is logistically easier for the
manufacturer to start with the same "base" detergent particle across their product
portfolio, and then only add these separate particles to the required products. This
particle architecture is a way of optimizing the logistics of manufacturing multiple
laundry powder products that share production facilities. One such chemistry that
is not always incorporated across an entire product portfolio is hueing dye.
[0003] Hueing dyes provide good whiteness performance to the laundry powder. The are often
formulated in the form of their own dedicated particle. Sometimes, these particles
are deliberately designed to be white, and to be "invisible" to the consumer when
combined with a "base" detergent particle, which is often white. Alternatively, these
particles can be coloured, and provide aesthetic benefits to the laundry powder as
well as providing good whiteness performance. However, these coloured particles have
problems of bleeding, where some of the dye "bleeds" into the rest of the laundry
detergent powder.
[0004] The present invention seeks to provide a laundry powder that has a dedicated hueing
dye particle. The hueing dye particle is coloured and provides aesthetic benefits
as well as providing whiteness performance benefits. The hueing dye particle does
not readily bleed, and the laundry detergent powder has a good stability profile.
[0005] The inventors have found that formulating a particle using hueing dye and a water-soluble
inorganic salt, and increasing the envelope density of the particle, enables higher
levels of fabric hueing dye agent to be incorporated into the particle whilst also
improving the stability profile of the particle in that the high-density particles
are less prone to bleeding.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0006] The present invention provides a solid detergent cleaning composition comprising
coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles and a detergent ingredient, wherein the
coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles comprise:
- (a) from 6.0wt% to 10wt% by weight thereof of the fabric hueing dye agent; and
- (b) a water-soluble inorganic salt,
wherein the coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles have an envelope density of
at least 1.9 g/cm3 as measured by Geopyc method.
[0007] The present invention also provides a method of making the solid detergent cleaning
composition, a method of using the solid detergent cleaning composition, and uses
of the coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0008] A solid detergent cleaning composition. The solid detergent cleaning composition
comprises coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles and a detergent ingredient, wherein
the coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles comprise:
- (a) from 6.0wt% to 10wt% by weight thereof of the fabric hueing dye agent; and
- (b) a water-soluble inorganic salt,
wherein the coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles have an envelope density of
at least 1.9 g/cm3 as measured by Geopyc method.
[0009] Typically, the composition is a laundry detergent composition.
[0010] The composition can be in any suitable solid form. The composition can be in the
form of a single-compartment pouch, a multi-compartment pouch, a sheet, a pastille
or bead, a fibrous article, a tablet, a bar, flake, or any mixture thereof. Preferably,
the composition is in powder form.
[0011] Preferably, the composition comprises surfactant, preferably from 10wt% to 50wt%
surfactant.
[0012] Coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles. The coloured fabric hueing dye agent
particles comprise:
- (a) from 6.0wt% to 10wt% by weight thereof of the fabric hueing dye agent; and
- (b) a water-soluble inorganic salt,
wherein the coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles have an envelope density of
at least 1.9 g/cm3 as measured by Geopyc method.
[0013] Fabric hueing dye agent. Typically, the fabric hueing dye agent comprises a fabric
hueing dye. Suitable hueing dye agents are described in more detail below.
[0014] A preferred hueing agent has the following structure:

[0015] Water-soluble inorganic salt. Any suitable water-soluble inorganic salt can be used.
A preferred water-soluble inorganic salt is sodium carbonate.
[0016] Detergent ingredients. The composition comprises a detergent ingredient. These detergent
ingredients can be selected from one or more of: enzymes, bleach agents, anti-redeposition
agents, neutralizers, optical brighteners, foam inhibitors, chelators, bittering agents,
dye transfer inhibitors, soil release agents, water softeners, electrolytes, pH regulators,
anti-greying agents, anti-crease components, colorants, scents, processing aids, and
any mixture thereof.
[0017] Solid free-flowing particulate laundry detergent composition: Typically, the solid
free-flowing particulate laundry detergent composition is a fully formulated laundry
detergent composition, not a portion thereof such as a spray-dried, extruded or agglomerate
particle that only forms part of the laundry detergent composition. Typically, the
solid composition comprises a plurality of chemically different particles, such as
spray-dried base detergent particles and/or agglomerated base detergent particles
and/or extruded base detergent particles, in combination with one or more, typically
two or more, or five or more, or even ten or more particles selected from: surfactant
particles, including surfactant agglomerates, surfactant extrudates, surfactant needles,
surfactant noodles, surfactant flakes; phosphate particles; zeolite particles; silicate
salt particles, especially sodium silicate particles; carbonate salt particles, especially
sodium carbonate particles; polymer particles such as carboxylate polymer particles,
cellulosic polymer particles, starch particles, polyester particles, polyamine particles,
terephthalate polymer particles, polyethylene glycol particles; aesthetic particles
such as coloured noodles, needles, lamellae particles and ring particles; enzyme particles
such as protease granulates, amylase granulates, lipase granulates, cellulase granulates,
mannanase granulates, pectate lyase granulates, xyloglucanase granulates, bleaching
enzyme granulates and co- granulates of any of these enzymes, preferably these enzyme
granulates comprise sodium sulphate; bleach particles, such as percarbonate particles,
especially coated percarbonate particles, such as percarbonate coated with carbonate
salt, sulphate salt, silicate salt, borosilicate salt, or any combination thereof,
perborate particles, bleach activator particles such as tetra acetyl ethylene diamine
particles and/or alkyl oxybenzene sulphonate particles, bleach catalyst particles
such as transition metal catalyst particles, and/or isoquinolinium bleach catalyst
particles, pre-formed peracid particles, especially coated pre-formed peracid particles;

[0018] Suitable laundry detergent compositions comprise a detergent ingredient selected
from: detersive surfactant, such as anionic detersive surfactants, non-ionic detersive
surfactants, cationic detersive surfactants, zwitterionic detersive surfactants and
amphoteric detersive surfactants; polymers, such as carboxylate polymers, soil release
polymer, anti-redeposition polymers, cellulosic polymers and care polymers; bleach,
such as sources of hydrogen peroxide, bleach activators, bleach catalysts and pre-formed
peracids; photobleach, such as such as zinc and/or aluminium sulphonated phthalocyanine;
enzymes, such as proteases, amylases, cellulases, lipases; zeolite builder; phosphate
builder; co-builders, such as citric acid and citrate; carbonate, such as sodium carbonate
and sodium bicarbonate; sulphate salt, such as sodium sulphate; silicate salt such
as sodium silicate; chloride salt, such as sodium chloride; brighteners; chelants;
hueing agents; dye transfer inhibitors; dye fixative agents; perfume; silicone; fabric
softening agents, such as clay; flocculants, such as polyethyleneoxide; suds supressors;
and any combination thereof.
[0019] Suitable laundry detergent compositions may have a low buffering capacity. Such laundry
detergent compositions typically have a reserve alkalinity to pH 9.5 of less than
5.0gNaOH/100g. These low buffered laundry detergent compositions typically comprise
low levels of carbonate salt.
[0020] Detersive Surfactant: Suitable detersive surfactants include anionic detersive surfactants,
non-ionic detersive surfactant, cationic detersive surfactants, zwitterionic detersive
surfactants and amphoteric detersive surfactants. Suitable detersive surfactants may
be linear or branched, substituted or un-substituted, and may be derived from petrochemical
material or biomaterial.
[0021] Anionic detersive surfactant: Suitable anionic detersive surfactants include sulphonate
and sulphate detersive surfactants.
[0022] Suitable sulphonate detersive surfactants include methyl ester sulphonates, alpha
olefin sulphonates, alkyl benzene sulphonates, especially alkyl benzene sulphonates,
preferably C
10-13 alkyl benzene sulphonate. Suitable alkyl benzene sulphonate (LAS) is obtainable,
preferably obtained, by sulphonating commercially available linear alkyl benzene (LAB);
suitable LAB includes low 2-phenyl LAB, other suitable LAB include high 2-phenyl LAB,
such as those supplied by Sasol under the tradename Hyblene
®.
[0023] Suitable sulphate detersive surfactants include alkyl sulphate, preferably C
8-18 alkyl sulphate, or predominantly C
12 alkyl sulphate.
[0024] A preferred sulphate detersive surfactant is alkyl alkoxylated sulphate, preferably
alkyl ethoxylated sulphate, preferably a C
8-18 alkyl alkoxylated sulphate, preferably a C
8-18 alkyl ethoxylated sulphate, preferably the alkyl alkoxylated sulphate has an average
degree of alkoxylation of from 0.5 to 20, preferably from 0.5 to 10, preferably the
alkyl alkoxylated sulphate is a C
8-18 alkyl ethoxylated sulphate having an average degree of ethoxylation of from 0.5 to
10, preferably from 0.5 to 5, more preferably from 0.5 to 3 and most preferably from
0.5 to 1.5.
[0025] The alkyl sulphate, alkyl alkoxylated sulphate and alkyl benzene sulphonates may
be linear or branched, substituted or un-substituted, and may be derived from petrochemical
material or biomaterial.
[0026] Other suitable anionic detersive surfactants include alkyl ether carboxylates.
[0027] Suitable anionic detersive surfactants may be in salt form, suitable counter-ions
include sodium, calcium, magnesium, amino alcohols, and any combination thereof. A
preferred counterion is sodium.

[0036] Carboxylate polymer: The composition may comprise a carboxylate polymer, such as
a maleate/acrylate random copolymer or polyacrylate homopolymer. Suitable carboxylate
polymers include: polyacrylate homopolymers having a molecular weight of from 4,000
Da to 9,000 Da; maleate/acrylate random copolymers having a molecular weight of from
50,000 Da to 100,000 Da, or from 60,000 Da to 80,000 Da.

[0047] Care polymers: Suitable care polymers include cellulosic polymers that are cationically
modified or hydrophobically modified. Such modified cellulosic polymers can provide
anti-abrasion benefits and dye lock benefits to fabric during the laundering cycle.
Suitable cellulosic polymers include cationically modified hydroxyethyl cellulose.
[0048] Other suitable care polymers include dye lock polymers, for example the condensation
oligomer produced by the condensation of imidazole and epichlorhydrin, preferably
in ratio of 1:4:1. A suitable commercially available dye lock polymer is Polyquart

suitable bleach includes a combination of a source of hydrogen peroxide with a bleach

The method of laundering fabric can be carried out in a front-loading automatic washing
machine, top loading automatic washing machines, including high efficiency automatic
washing machines, or suitable hand-wash vessels._Typically, the wash liquor comprises
90 litres or less, or 60 litres or less, or 15 litres or less, or 10 litres or less
of water. Typically, 200g or less, or 150g or less, or 100g or less, or 50g or less
of laundry detergent composition is contacted to water to form the wash liquor.

and repeat the run. Note the resulting average of the 3 cycles and standard deviation.

- 9. A process for making a composition according to any preceding embodiment, wherein
the process comprising the step of:
- (a) providing a water-soluble inorganic salt;
- (b) providing a fabric hueing dye agent;
- (c) mixing the water-soluble inorganic salt and the fabric hueing dye agent to form
a mixture;
- (d) subjecting the mixture obtained in step (c) to roller compaction to form a roller
compacted sheet;
- (e) breaking the roller compacted sheet to form initial particles;
- (f) subjecting the initial particles to a sieving and colleting step to obtain coloured
fabric hueing dye agent particles; and
- (g) contacting the coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles to detergent base particles
to form the solid detergent cleaning composition.
- 10. A process according to embodiment 9, wherein during the roller compaction step
(d), mixture obtained in step (c) is subjected to a pressure of at least 1.8 ×107 Pa.
- 11. A domestic method of treating a textile, wherein the method comprising the steps
of:
- (i) treating a textile with an aqueous solution of 0.5 to 20 g/l of the composition
according to any of embodiments 1 to 8 to form a treated textile; and
- (ii) optionally, rinsing and drying the treated textile.
- 12. Use of coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles in a solid laundry detergent
to reduce bleeding of the fabric hueing dye agent,
wherein the coloured fabric hueing dye agent particles comprise:
- (a) from 6.0wt% to 10wt% by weight thereof of the fabric hueing dye agent; and

compaction process as described, and the colouring agent added is measured by mass
%. Particle 1 has higher colouring agent load and also higher envelope density as
a result of exposure to higher pressure during the compaction step.
