(54) METHODS AND APPARATUSES FOR DECODER-SIDE MOTION VECTOR REFINEMENT IN VIDEO CODING


(57) A method for video encoding is provided. The method includes: partitioning a video frame into multiple blocks; deriving an initial motion vector (MV) of a current block in the multiple blocks; deriving cost values for the initial MV and each of MV candidates, wherein the cost values are sums of absolute differences (SADs), and wherein a SAD for a respective MV is calculated between reference blocks for the respective MV; obtaining an updated cost value for the initial MV by decreasing a cost value for the initial MV, wherein decreasing the cost value for the initial MV comprises decreasing the cost value for the initial MV by a first value that is determined as 1/4 of the cost value for the initial MV; and deriving a refined MV using the updated cost value for the initial MV and the cost values for the MV candidates.
