(57) The present invention relates to an aerosol-generating system, comprising an aerosol-generating article comprising an aerosol-generating substrate, and an aerosol-generating device (1), comprising a heating chamber (4) adapted to receive an aerosol-generating article, a heating element (5), a sealed housing compartment (8), a venting means (10) adapted to allow gas flow from the sealed housing compartment (8) to the outside of the aerosol-generating device (1) to compensate for heat expansion of gas inside the housing compartment (8) due to heating operation of the heating element (5). The invention further relates to a method for operating an aerosol-generating system and a use of a venting membrane (10) in an aerosol-generating device (1).
