[0001] The invention relates to a method for assembling a book consisting of a block of paper sheets and a back cover, in which method on transportation of the book to be assembled a pressure is applied to the back cover adhered to at least one side of the block of paper sheets by means of glue, said pressure being applied during such a predetermined time interval as for the glue to acquire adequate adhesive power for fixing the back cover to the block of paper sheets.
[0003] The machine described therein comprises a plurality of spring-loaded rollers exerting a pressure to the back cover of a book transported therealong by a conveyor and side-guiding belts.
[0004] This prior art machine does not exhibit a fully satisfactory operation. Probably, due to the constant pressure exerted during the time interval in which the book to be assembled passes the series of rollers, the effectiveness of the pressure is gradually decreasing as the glue is curing during that time interval.
[0005] The invention has as its object to provide a method which is more efficient and gives a better adhesion between the block of paper sheets and the back cover.
[0006] In view thereof the invention provides a method of the type described in the preamble, said method being characterized in that the pressure is increased in the direction of transport.
[0007] The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing a device implementing the method according to the invention.

[0008] The figures show an elongated frame 1, in which four vertical shafts 2 are journalled. To the top ends of said shafts are keyed grooved reversing rollers 3, along which V ropes 4 extend pairwise in the direction of length of the frame. The proximal parts of the two sets of V-ropes are supported on the rear side by grooved supporting rollers 5, whose vertical rotary shafts are journalled in longitudinal carriers 6, 7. One longitudinal carrier 6 is rigidly connected with the frame 1, whereas the other carrier 7 is slidable in the frame 1 in the transverse direction and is loaded by compression springs 8 towards the longitudinal carrier 6. In this way books can be clamped with a given force between the two belt conveyors.
[0009] In the embodiment shown the frame 1 comprised two parts 1' and 1", which are relatively displaceable by means of screw spindles 9 in the transverse direction and which support each a belt conveyor, so that the distance between the two sets of V-ropes can be adapted to the thicknesses of the books to be treated. One of each pair of reversing rollers 3 can be driven by a motor 10 common to the pair.
[0010] Below the two proximal faces of the belt conveyors the frame 1 comprises a roller conveyor or roller track formed by a large number of freely rotatable rollers 11, whose parallel rotary axes are orthogonal to the parallel planes of said belt parts. The shafts are movable in vertical slits in the frame part 1 and are upwardly loaded by compression springs 12. The tension of these springs is adjustable by means of set screws 13.
[0011] When a book block with a cover applied thereto is passed by the V-ropes through the device, the back directed downwards is constantly exposed to pressure by the rollers 11. The rate of passage and the length of the device should match the kind of glue in a manner such that the glue has obtained adequate adhesive power, when emerging from the device, for retaining the cover on the book block.
A method for assembling a book consisting of a block of paper sheets and a back cover,
in which method on transportation of the book to be assembled a pressure is applied

of paper sheets, characterized in that the pressure is increased in the direction
of transport.
Méthode de confection d'un livre consistant en un bloc de feuilles, de papier et un
dos de reliure, dans laquelle au cours du transport du livre à assembler, une pression
est appliquée sur le dos de reliure fixé sur au moins un côté du bloc de feuilles
de papier au moyen de colle, ladite pression étant appliquée pendant un intervalle
de temps prédéterminé tel que la colle acquière une force d'adhérence adéquate pour
fixer le dos de reliure au bloc de feuilles de papier, caractérisé en ce que la pression
est augmentée dans le sens du transport.
Verfahren zum Binden eines aus einem Block von Papierblättern und einem Deckel bestehenden
Buches, wobei der an mindestens einer Buchblockseite durch einen Leim aufgeklebte
Deckel bei der Förderung des zu bindenden Buches für eine vorbestimmte Zeit unter
Druck gesetzt wird, so daß der Leim ausreichend an Klebkraft gewinnt, um den Degkei
an dem Buchblock festzukleben, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Druck zur Förderrichtung
hin erhöht wird.
