[0001] This invention concerns a device for the checking of tne attachment of bristle sets
in brushes.
[0002] The device, according to the invention, consists essentially of clamps that can enclose
a bristle set of a brush, mechanisms that can move the clamps with respect to each
other in such a way that they clamp onto the enclosed bristle set, and mechanisms
that move the clamps in such a way that they pull on the bristle set lengthwise and
away from the brush base.
[0003] In or5er better to illustrate the characteristics of the invention, a preferential
form of application is described with reference to the accompanying drawings. The
invention is not limited in any way whatsoever to this example.

to the invention;
Figure 2: a view as indicated by Arrow F2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3: a view as indicated by lines III-III in Figure 1;
Figure 4: a larger scale presentation of a part that is indicated in Figure 3 by F4;
Figure 5: a view equivalent to that of Figuie 2 but in the second characteristic position;
Figure 6: a view as indicated by Arrow F6 in Figure 5;
Figure 7: a view as indicated by lines VII-VII in Figure 5.
[0004] The device according to the invention consists primarily of a support 1 that is immobile
with respect to the machine frame and in which one or more guide rods 2 are provided,
all this in such a way that the device is positively controlled according to the invention.
[0005] The rods 2 can move back and forth according to Arrows Fl and P2 and carry a support
3 for a pressure cylinder 4.
[0006] The piston rod 5 of the latter is connected to a slide 6 in which, in this case,
three pins 7,8,9 are attached that can move in a recess 10 in the plate 11 of a frame
12 in which the slide 6 is guided and in which two arms 14,15 are placed that can
be hinged around axle 13. The frame 12 is further provided with two guide rods 16,17
over which the support 3 can be moved.
[0007] The arm 14 has at the bottom a projection 18 that has a recess 19, while the arm
15 has two projections 20,21 in between which the projection 18 can move whereby these
projections 20,21 each have an identical recess 22. The arms 14 and 15 show on their
upper slanted portions, 23 and 24, respectively, that can move between pins 7 and
8 and 8 and 9, respectively.
[0008] The support 3 has also an adjustable stop 25, in this case formed by an adjustment
screw, for a spring 26 of which the other end works together with the frame 12.
[0009] Both the pressure cylinder, not shown, that regulates rod 2 and the pressure cylinder
4 are double-action.
[0010] The operation of the device is very simple and as follows.
[0011] In the initial position, the device is in the retracted position, in other words,
the projections or clamps 18 and 20 and 21 are situated in front of the brush 27 of
which one or more sets of bristles 28 must be checked in order to determine if they
are sufficiently solidly attached.
[0012] Then the rods 2 in the drawings move to the right with respect to the support 1 so
that the device comes into the position as shown in Figure 1, in other words, with
the clamps 18 and 20-21 in such a position that one bristle set 28 is enclosed by
the recesses 19 and 20, while the adjacent bristle sets 28 are, in this case, pushed
aside, as is shown on the drawings.
[0013] At this time, the pressure cylinder 4 is activated, whereby the slide 6 and as a
result of this the pins 7, 8, and 9 are pushed upwards from the position as shown
in Figures 1 and 2, which results in parts 23 and 24 of arms 14 and 15 being pushed
apart, which results in clamps 18 and 20-21 coming together, all this in such a way
that the bristle set 28 is clamped in the appropriate way in the recesses 19 and 22,
whereby the pressure exerted by clamps 18 and 20-21 on the bristle set 28 is determined
by the adjustment of the spring 26 by turning the screw 25.
[0014] Indeed, at a particular moment, slide 6 comes against the upper wall of the frame
12 whereby the further movement of the piston rod 5, against the action of the spring
26, results in moving the frame 12 together with the arms 14-15 over a suitable distance
upwards whereby a well- determined force is exerted on the bristle set 28 lengthwise
away from the brush.
[0015] This very slight upwards movement has the result that a bristle set 28 that is too
loose will be pulled out of the brush base 27 so that such a brush can be discarded.
[0016] It is obvious that such an installation can be placed anywhere in the manufacturing
cycle of a brush, in other words, directly on the machine after the insertion of the
bristle sets, on the installations that process the brush further, or even on the
packing machine, whereby obvious means will be provided that see to it that, when
a fault is discovered, i.e., when a bristle set 28 comes loose, the machine or the
production line is stopped.
[0017] It is also obvious that such a device can be provided to operate on one or more bristle
sets 28 of the same brush 27 and it can also be provided that only certain brushes
are tested as a sample.
[0018] It is obvious that the invention is in no way limited to the application described
in the example and depicted in the accompanying drawings, but such a device can be
manufactured in all shapes and dimensions without falling outside the scope of the
invention.
